Having thus described the nature of the invention, what I I claim herein is:
l. An adjustable presser mechanism for a sewing machine having a frame, said presser mechanism comprising a presser bar mounted in said frame for longitudinal slidingk movements, a coil compression spring arranged coaxially of and operatively connected to said presser bar for biasing the same for axial sliding movement, and an adjustable abutment for said spring for varying the compression thereof, said adjustable abutment comprising a bushing secured in said frame, a cam surface formed upon the end of said bushing adjacent said presser bar, a two-part rod journaled for rotation in said bushing, said rod having a first rod element and a second rod element axially slidable relative to one another but keyed together for unitary rotation, said first element forming an abutment for said spring and said second element extending from said bushing'to the exterior of said frame whereby it may be manually grasped for rotating the same, means for confining said second element against axial movement, a'cam follower carried by said iirst element and cooperating with said cam surface on said bushing for sliding said rst element Vaxially upon rotation thereof and thereby varying the compression of said spring.

An adjustable presser mechanism for a sewing machine having a frame, said presser mechanism comprising a presser bar mounted in said frame for longitudinal sliding movements and having an axial bore extending inwardly from one end thereof, a coil compression spring disposed within said bore and abutting at one end against the bottom of said bore, and an adjustable abutment for the other end of said spring for varying the compression thereof, said adjustable abutment comprising a bushing secured in said frame, a camsurface formed upon the end of said bushing adjacent said presser bar, a two-part rod journaled in said bushing, said rod having a first rod element and a second rod element axially slidable relative to one another but keyed together for unitary rotation, said first element extending into the bore in said presser bar and said second element extending from said bushing to the exterior of said frame whereby it may be manually grasped for rotating the same, means for confining said second element against axial movement, a cam follower carried by said rst element and cooperating with cam surface on said bushing for sliding said first element axially upon rotation thereof and thereby varying the compression of said spring, and indicia carried by said second element to indicate the setting thereof and thus indicate the compression of the spring.

An adjustable presser mechanism for a sewing machine having a frame, said presser mechanism comprising a presser bar mounted in said frame for longitudinal sliding movements, spring means operatively connected to said presser bar for biasing the same for axial sliding movement, and adjustablemeans operatively connected to said spring for varying the resilient action thereof, said adjustable means comprising a two-part rod journaled for rotation in said frame, said rod having a rst rod element and a second rod element axially slidable relative to one another but keyed together for unitary rotation, said first element abutting against said spring for varying the resilient action thereof upon axial movement of said rst element, said second element comprising an actuating member whereby said rod may be rotated, means for confining said second element against axial movement, and meansv associated with said rst element for imparting axial movement thereto upon rotation of said first rod element.

An adjustable presser mechanism for a sewing machine having a frame, said presser mechanism comprising a presser bar mounted in said frame for longitudinal sliding movements, a coil compression spring arranged coaxially of and operatively connected to said presser bar for biasing the same for axial sliding movement, and an adjustable abutment for said spring for Varying the compression thereof, said adjustable abutment comprising a bushing secured in said frame and a two-part rod journaled for rotation in said bushing, said rod having a rst rod element and a second rod element axially slidable relative to one another but keyed together for unitary rotation, said rst element abutting against said spring for varying the compression thereof upon axial movement of said rst element, v said second element extending through said bushing and comprising an actuating member whereby said rod may be rotated, means for confining said second element against 'axial movement, and means associated with said iirst element for imparting axial movement thereto upon rotation thereof.

A quick-release device for the presser mechanism of a sewing machine comprising an externally threaded bushing adapted to be screwed into the head of a sewing machine and having a bore, an axial displacement cam on said bushing, a two part rod journaled in said bushing, said rod having a first rod element and a second rod element axially slidable relative to one another but keyed together for unitary rotation, said tirst rod element extending from the lower end of said bushing, said second rod element extending from the upper end of said bushing, means upon the exposed end of said second rod element to provide for manually rotating the same, means for confining said second rod element against axial movement, a cam follower carried by said first rod element and cooperating with said axial displacement cam for sliding said first rod element axially upon rotation thereof.

An adjustable presser mechanism for a sewing machine having a frame, said presser mechanism comprising a presser bar mounted in said frame for axial sliding movements, spring means operatively connected to said presser bar for biasing the same for axial sliding movements, and an adjustable abutment mounted in said frame and operatively connectedfto said spring for varying the resilient action thereof, said adjustable abutment including a pair of elements comprising a bushing having a bore and a rod-mounted in the bore of said bushing for axial sliding movement, one end of said rod forming an abutment for said spring, an axial displacement cam formation upon one of said elements and a cooperating cam follower upon the other of said elements for sliding said rod axially upon relative rotation between said rod and bushing, an actuating member, means mounting said actuating member in said frame for rotation and for holding the same against endwise movement relative to said frame, and means operatively connecting said actuating member to one of said elements for unitary rotation and for relative movement endwise for effecting relative rotation between said rod and bushing upon rotation of said actuating member and thereby sliding said rod axially and varying the resilient action of said spring.
