` Application Maschili, 195s; serial Nofjl'zjm Y, lsc'laims.- (ci.4 s484211) v 'Inisj invention [relates to pail suppetinglbrackeis, and,
mor pjarticularly'to a ybrj'aic'skt'device forv supporting@ paint bucket, or the like, on a ladder,
The main object of the inventiony isy to provide a novel and improved pail supporting bracket for use with a ladder, said bracket being simple in construction, being easy to mount on a ladder, and providing a secure and reliable support for a bucket of paint, or the like, attached thereto.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved pail supporting bracket for use with a ladder, said bracket being arranged so that it may be used either at the right or left side of the ladder, the device involving relatively inexpensive components, being durable in construction, and being provided with means for locking the handle element of a pail thereto so that the pail cannot accidentally become dislodged or detached therefrom, and so that the ladder, with the bracket and pail attached thtreto, may be easily moved from one location to the o er.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a pail supporting bracket constructed in accordance with the present invention, shown with a fragmentary portion of a ladder to which the bracket is to be attached.
Figure 2 is a horizontal cross-sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, but showing the locking lever of the bracket in its locking position.
Figure 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an end elevational detail view of the main bar member employed in the bracket device of Figures 1 to 3, said view being taken on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary top plan View of the main bar member of the bracket device, said View being taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a front elevational view, on a reduced scale, of a ladder provided with a pail supporting bracket, as illustrated in Figures 1 to 5, and showing the manner in which a paint bucket is supported by the bracket device.
Referring to the drawings, 11 generally designates an improved pail supporting bracket assembly according to the present invention. The bracket assembly 11 comprises a main bar member 12 formed with a U-bend 13 adapted to receive the side rail 14 of a ladder 15', one end portion of the main bar member 12 being provided with a hook member 15 rigidly secured to its edge, said hook member being adapted to receive a rung 16 of the ladder at a portion of said rung adjacent to the side rail 14, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. Thus, the U-bend 13 may be formed adjacent one end of the main bar member 12, as illustrated, whereby an endtab 17 is dened between the U-bend 13 and the end edge of the bar member 12.` The hook member 15 comprises a generally U- shaped strip of at metal which is welded at one end thereof to the top edge of the tab 17, as shown at 18 in Figure 3. The open end of the hook member 15 is lofr' il@ sneer 'rvvrdiygras isjniefopen end of theo-slapen elem f Thlotwardly extending 'arm portionpf trie 'mainbar memberhlz is ,formed withthe transversely extending nangepsvgsaid .nangebeingformed jw'ith la verticaijsiot 4 'straightloc'king 'lever which is 'tiallygl ccei't p sive in 'length with 'theA main bar i12 andjwhichis pivb'tally connectent@ jsaidjmain inner at a pointjbutwardly ud lent the U-bend a 'rifvetzz 'Theputejr' jend. on of the'lcck- 'rnbe'r'fz'L isiinotched away'- at' its 'viver corner, as at 123todetiiie'a loekingflug "24"whichis engagetheA verticalsl'ot -20 when. thelocking lever '21' is licrirc'iiitalI position adjacent' the main'- bar 2, :The notch 23, however, is kof sui'cientfheight wire" bail-handle'fzs of ak bucket 216' maybe ,',r'cei 1 ,k theli'g'z'jftwhen thej'tjop edge offthe`locking`leve'r`21 is` in its liriintal position, substantially ush with the top edge of the main bar member 12.
A headed rivet member 26 is rigidly secured in the tab element 1 7 of the main bar member 12 and projects rearwardly therefrom, as shown in Figure 2. The inner end portion of the locking member 21 is formed with an arcuate slot 27 inl which the shank portion of the headed rivet member 26 is receivable when the locking lever 21 is rotated to its horizontal position, shown in Figures 2 and 3.
In using the bracket device, the U-shaped member 13 is rst engaged with one side rail 14 of the ladder and the hook element 15 is engaged on a rung 16 at the desired height on the ladder. The handle bail 25 of the bucket 26 is then engaged in the slot 20, and the locking lever 21 is then rotated from the position thereof shown in Figure l to its horizontal position, whereby the lug 24 enters the upper portion of slot 20 above the bail 25 and whereby the slot 27 lockingly engages with the shank portion of the headed rivet 26, frictionally locking the lever 21 in its horizontal position wherein the top edge is ush with the top edge of the main bar member 12. As shown in Figure 2, the locking lever 21 also frict tionally engages the rear surface of the side rail 14 of the ladder, so that the U-shaped member 13 is dimensioned to snugly receive the side rail. Thus, the bracket device is securely fastened to the ladder and secures the bucket handle 25 so thatthe bucket is fastened to the ladder vand cannot accidentally become detached therefrom.
As is readily apparent, the bracket may be applied either to the right side of the ladder or to the left side thereof, since the device maybe engaged with the left -side rail of the ladder by merely reversing the position thereof shown in Figure 6.
While a specific embodiment of an improved pail supporting bracket device has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
