Original application August 23, 1954, Serial No. 451,533,
now Patent No. 2,753,209, dated July 3, 1956. Diglsdlecllognd this application May 24, 1956, Serial No.
2 Claims. (Cl. 242-68) This invention relates in general to toilet tissue holders and, more particularly, to an adapter for rendering tissue supporting cores or rollers of various types usable with core or roller supporting brackets or mechanisms of various types, the present application being a division of my copending application Serial No. 451,533, filed August 23, 1954, now Patent No. 2,753,209, issued July 3, 1956.
Toilet tissue for home use is ordinarily sold in roll form, the rolls being placed on cores or rollers which are carried by suitable supporting mechanisms, such as brackets. It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel attachment for adapting tissue supporting cores of various shapes and sizes for use with core supporting brackets having holes therein of various sizes so that the cores and brackets may be used in various combinations.
Another object is to provide a cylindrical adapter capable of insertion into a bracket hole and provided with a cylindrical recess in one end thereof and a cylindrical projection on the other end thereof, such recess being capable of receiving therein a boss on a tissue supporting core or a core supporting bracket, and such projection being insertable into a hole ina tissue supporting core or a core supporting bracket. Thus, such cores and brackets may be used in various combinations with the adapter of the invention, which is an important feature.
Further features of the invention will be apparent in the remainder of this specification and the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a toilet tissue core or roller;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the toilet tissue core shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a broken-away side view of the core shown in Fig. 1, illustrating certain structural details;
Fig. 4 is asectional view taken along the arrowed line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a partially sectional view illustrating the use of the adapter of the invention, and
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 showing another application of the adapter shown in Fig. 5.
In Fig. 1, there is shown a core or roller 10 of a toilet tissue holder. This core comprises end sections 11 each of which is formed with a plurality of projecting fingers 12, the fingers of the respective end sections being designed to fit between one another so as to form a substantially cylindrical surface 14 which is adapted to support a roll of toilet tissue in the usual manner. Any
desired number of fingers on each of the end sections 11 may be used so long as the number and configuration of the fing'ers'are such that these fingers =areadapted to fit together substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The two end sections 11 are biased apart by means of a spring 15 which fits between the end sections 11 and within the fingers 12 so as to tend to force these end sections 11 apart when the holder 10 is used. This spring provides a certain amount of support to these fingers and makes the device relatively rigid. The spring 15 is adapted to fit against various spacer lugs 16 formed within the central portions 17 of the ends 11. The spring 15 is also adapted to hold a cylindrical cake 18 of a suitable chemical deodorizing agent, such as, for example, paradichlorobenzene, within the core or roller 10. If desired, such chemical agent may be admixed with a small quantity of a volatile perfume designed to give a pleasant scent to the area in which the toilet tissue holder is used.
The central portion 17 of each end section 11 is provided with a plurality of openings 19 which extend through the central portion 17 and through flat sections 20 of the end sections. These openings are designed to disseminate volatile fumes from the cake 18 out past and around a roll of toilet tissue disposed over the fingers 12 during use of the device.
Each of the end sections 11 is provided with a cylindrical boss 21 having a central opening or hole 22. These cylindrical bosses are adapted to be placed in holes or sockets in brackets, or other suitable supporting mechanisms, not shown, and to be held therein by the action vention such as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings, may be utilized. The adapter 25 includes a cylindrical side wall 26 to which there is secured a closed end 27 upon which there is mounted a cylindrical projection 28. In other words, the adapter 25 is provided with a cylindrical portion 26 having a cylindrical recess in one end thereof and a cylindrical projection 28 on the other end thereof. Preferably, the projection 28 is of such diameter as to fit tightly within the opening 22 so that the cylindrical wall 26 of the adapter 25 is spaced from the cylindrical boss 21, as shown in Fig. 5. The cylindrical portions 26 of the adapters 25 can then be placed within sockets having diameters corresponding to the outer diameters of the walls or portions 26. The cylindrical portion 26 of each adapter 25 is preferably of larger diameter than the cylindrical boss 21 and is adapted to fit tightly over this boss, as illustrated in Fig. 6 so that the adapters of the invention can be used with the projections 28 inserted into small sockets in appropriate supporting brackets.
Those skilled in the art will readily recognize that the present invention thus provides adapters 25 which may be used with virtually any members presently in use for supporting rolls of toilet tissue. 0bviously, various modifications may be made without departing from the essential teachings of the present invention and such modifications are to be considered as part of the inventive concept insofar'as-they are defined by the apvided with two cylindrical bosses projecting axially from 5 the ends of said core, said bosses being provided with cylindrical axial openings therein; and two cylindrical adapters having cylindrical axial recesses therein of a diameter to slidably receive said bosses and provide thereon with cylindrical axial projections of a diameter to 0 2,801,
a 4 n slidably fit into said openings, said recesses and said projections being located at opposite ends of said adapters. 2. The combination set forth in claim- 1 wherein said bosses are of lesser diameter than said core.
