MORTIMER RECORDS, FOREST, DELAWARE.
HAND CORN-PLANTER,
. t V I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,162, dated October 23, 1883. Application filed April 28, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MORTIMER Rnconns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forest, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Hand Corn-Planter, of which the following isaspecification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to hand corn-plant ers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, having for their object to produce a more simple and inexpensive and at the same time fully as useful and effective a machine as those now in general use.
To this end my invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts,
which will be hereinafter fully described, and
particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hand corn-planter with parts broken away for the purpose of showing the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is avertical section on the line m in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings designates the box or casing of my improved planter, which consists,.
simply, of a suitably-sized rectangular box, one side of which is provided, near the upper end, witha hinged door, B, through which the box, which also serves as a hopper, maybe filled with seed.
O is the bottom of the box, the upper side of which is dished toward the center, so as to feed or guide the seed toward the slide D, which is fitted to move vertically in the box closely adjoining the rear side of the same. The bottom O-and top E of the box are provided with openings for the passage of the slide, which extends some distance through the top, and is provided with a suitable handle, F, by means of which it may be readily manipulated. The upper end of the slide is also provided, above the top of the box, with a transverse cross-piece or pin, G, verticallyadjustable in any one of a series of transverse perforations, H, in the slide, which said pin serves as a stop to regulate the extent to which the slide may move in a downward direction,
and consequently the depth of planting, as will presently more fully appear.
The sliding stem D is provided with an opening, I, which forms the seed-cup, and the capacity of which may be regulated by a slide, J, vertically adjustable uponthe side of stem D by means of screws working in slots in said slide and extending over-the seed-cup, which may thus be partially covered. Bottom O of thebox is provided, in the side adjoining serves, by striking the under side of the bottom, to limit the movement of the slide in 'an upward direction.
O O are metallic plates, forming guards, secured to the front and rear ends of the box, adjoining the plunger, and elastic jaws P, formed of plates of spring-steel, are secured to the sides, between the guards.
The operation of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. When the slide is raised to its full extent, the seed-cup is above the bottom, thus permitting the seed to pass into and fill the said cup, or as much of it as is exposed by the slide J. WVhenthe plungeris lowered, the seed will drop from the seed-cup onto the beveled upper edge of the plunger, which de fleets it into the space between the jaws. When the operation is repeated, the plunger forces the seed contained in the space between the jaws out between the latter, which are opened by the pressure of the plunger, and into the ground, where a hole is formed by the opening of the jaws. The extent to which the plunger may be lowered will be determined by the transverse pin or stop G.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a hand cornplanter, the combination of the seed-box, the vertically-movable seed- IOO ' at the lower end of the latter, extending transversely under the entire width of the bottom,
having beveled top side, the guard secured to the front and rear ends of the box, andthe 15 elastic jaws arranged between the said guards, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in 20 presence of two witnesses.
MORTIMER RECORDS.
