3 Claims. (Cl. 40-158) The invention herein disclosed relates to holders for photographic negatives and prints such as disclosed in copending patent application Serial No. 735,609, filed May 15, 1958, and is concerned particularly with the structure of the holder and the method of its manufacture.

Objects of the invention are to provide an inexpensive readily manufactured form of holder which will-serve as a container for the negative, a support for a print derived from the negative, and which may be used as a file for the negative and accompanying, identifying print or be mounted on the page of an album or other such support.

Other, special objects of the invention are to provide a simple practical method for the manufacture of such holders.

Other desirable objects and the novel features through which the purposes of the invention are accomplished are set forth and will appear in the course of the following specification.

The drawing accompanying and forming part of the specification illustrates a practical embodiment and the novel series of steps through which this embodiment of the invention is manufactured. Structure and the steps of manufacture, however, may be modified and changed as regards the immediate illustration, all within the true intent and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.

Fig. 1 in the drawing is a plan view of a blank for forming the body of the holder.

Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the blank coated on one side with pressure sensitive adhesive, with a dividing line at the center where less or no adhesive is applied.

Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the adhesive coated face covered with a protective sheet, severed on the center line, in two separately removable cover sections.

Fig. 4 is a plan showing the covered blank die cut with a thumb notch and rounded corner.

Fig. 5 is a plan showing the opposite face of the die cut blank supplied at one side with the gum necessary for securing it in folded envelope form.

Fig. 6 is a plan view showing the blank folded on the gummed side, at the center line, to form the completed open ended envelope and further indicating a negative inserted in the envelope and the cover in the course of removal from the face of the enevelope.

Fig. 7 is a front elevation showing a print from the negative applied to the exposed pressure sensitive face of the envelope, serving then as identification for the negative held in the envelope.

Fig. 8 is a view of the back face of the envelope with cover sheet being removed to enable mounting of the holder in an album or other supporting structure.

Fig. 9 is a broken front elevation of an album structure with negative and print holders mounted therein.

Fig. 10 is a view of one of the holders used simply as a filecontaining a negative, but ready for further use to *carry a print of the negative and if desired to be mounted on the page of an album or other support.

consists of a rectangular sheet of paper or other suitable envelope forming material 15.

This sheet, as shown in Fig. 2, is partially or completely coated on one face with pressure sensitive adhesive 16,- preferably with less or no adhesive along the center fold line indicated at 17.

Pressure sensitive adhesive is protected, as shown in Fig. 3, by a cover sheet 18 of wax paper or other readily removable material.

In Fig. 3 the cover sheet 18 is shown as severed at 19 in line with the center fold line 17. While it may be considered most practical to completely cover the pressure sensitive coated face and then to sever the cover sheet on the fold line, it is contemplated that the cover sheet may be applied in the form of strips separated at 19 on the fold line of the base envelope forming sheet.

After application of the pressure sensitive adhesive and the readily removable cover sheet the blank may be die cut to provide a thumb notch 20 in the upper edge and a rounded corner as indicated at 21, Fig. 4.

Following the pressure sensitive adhesive, cover sheet, slitting and die cutting operations, all at one face of the blank, the blank may be turned over .and gummed on the opposite face as indicated at 22 in Fig. 5 to make it ready for the envelope formation.

The latter is shown in Fig. 6 where the blank has been folded on the gummed side on the line 23, Fig. 5, to form a pocket 24, Fig. 6, for receiving a negative 25.

In this completed envelope form cover sheet 18 on the face of the envelope may be removed to expose the pressure sensitive coating 16 for reception of a print 26 of the negative then contained within the envelope, as shown in Fig. 7.

The cover strip 18 then on the back of the envelope may be removed as indicated in Fig. 8 to expose the pressure sensitive adhesive 16 and thus enable the envelope, containing the negative and carrying the identifying print on the face of the same to be mounted on the page 27 of an album or other supporting structure, as indicated in Fig. 9.

In this relation the envelope serves as a holder mounted on the page of an album or other support carrying within it a concealed negative and supporting on the face of it a print of that negative, identifying and indicating where if desired for application of a negative identifying print thereto or for mounting in an album or on any other support.

The thumb notch 20 facilitates removal and insertion of the negatives in the holders and this is particularly desirable where the negatives are of smaller size than the prints produced therefrom, as indicated in Figs. 6 and 7.

The prints being of the full size of the envelope conceal the envelope structure so that in an album or even when used only for filing purposes the print covers the entire face of the envelope and is the part which is seen by a party searching through an album or a file for particular desired negatives.

By omitting or reducing the pressure sensitive adhesive along the fold line 17 the base sheet is rendered the more readily foldable and in addition the edges of the cover sheet 18 are left free at the fold line for ready separation from the base sheet. By less adhesive along the fold line it is therefore meant either an absence or a reduced amount of adhesive. Similarly other expressions have been used in a descriptive rather than in a Patented Feb. 3, 1959 limiting sense except as may be required by limitations in the prior art.

By providing the cover sheet 18 in separate sections, either by severing along the center line 19 or by applying it in separate strips over the pressure sensitive coated surface, easy, quick removal is facilitated because as the base sheet is folded the cut edges separating the two sections will be exposed and spread apart by the folding action where they may bereadily grasped for such removal.

What is claimed is:

1. A holder for a photographic negative and a print identified therewith comprising a base sheet of envelope forming material having a coating of pressure sensitive adhesive on one face, a readily removable cover sheet over said pressure sensitive adhesive face, separated on a dividing line corresponding to an intermediate fold line of the base sheet, a gum coating on the opposite face of the base sheet at one side of said intermediate fold line and said base sheet being folded on the gummed side at 4 said intermediate fold line into envelope form conformation.

2. A holder according to claim 1 with less pressure sensitive adhesive on said pressure sensitive adhesive side of the base sheet along said intermediate line of folding and in line with said separation line of the cover sheet.

3. The invention according to claim 1 with the gum disposed to form the internal envelope dimensions less than the full size-dimensions of the completed envelope and the pressure sensitive adhesive coating disposed to secure a print of the full dimensions of the envelope whereby to carry a print of the negative sufficient to conceal the supporting envelope.
