UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. A
WILLIAM n. Lone, or sTELLAPoLIs, IowA.
WAGON-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,037, dated October 23, 1883. Application filed July 28, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom tm/ay concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stellapolis, inthe county of Iowa and State ofV Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Brakes; and I .do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of my invention; Fig. 2, a detail side elevation of the tongue and push-bar; Fig. 3, a similar view of one of the tongue-hounds, and Fig. 4 a detail view of one of the eccentric rub-blocks. This invention relates-to certain new and useful improvements in wagon-brakes, the object thereof being to produce such a device simple in itsconstruction, automatic and effective in its operation, and capable of being applied to any ordinary wagon, the invention consisting in the details of construction substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, A represents awagontongue provided with the usual double-tree pin, a. Connected to this tongue A are hounds B, slotted plates C being bolted to these hounds upontheir upper and lower sides to hold them in place against said tongue.
D represents the fronthounds of a wagon, suitably secured to anv axle, E, carrying wheels F.
Connected to a clevis, b, secured tothe rear end of the tongue A, is a push-bar, G, having bolted to its rear end, upon each side, rods c, working in perforations in a bar, H, secured to the rear ends of the front hounds, I), said rods being for the purpose of holding the pushbar in place and preventing its lateral displacement.
Pivotally secured'to the bar Hare brakelevers I, having at their outer Vends eccentric rub-blocks J, their-inner ends being provided with connecting-rods adapted to engage with an equalizer, K, bolted upon the under side near the end of the push-bar G. l
Bolted to the axle E, over the push-bar G, is a plate, L, `which separates said push-bar from the wagon-reach M.
The tongue A, at its rear end, is provided with a slot, d, to admit of its sliding backward and forward on the tongue-rod e and cross-piece f of the tongue-hounds when throwing on and oft the brakes.
In the operation of my invention, when the team is backed the slidingtongue connected to the push-bar G operates the brake levers, bringing the eccentric blocks J up against the wheels F. Said blocks, when thus thrown on the wheels, revolve to bring their thickest sides thereon. When the wagon is backed, the backward revolution of the wheels F cause these eccentric rub-blocks to turn until their thin sides are brc ught next said wheels, when the push-bar G takes up on the kingbolt and stops the brake, thus allowing the wagon vto back without locking. The chain g,
one end of which is bolted to the brake-lever and the other to the rub-block, when tight, holds said block against the wheel with its thickest side next thereto; and when the wagon is backed the bolt h, which holds the chain to the rub-block, strikes against 'the bottom side of the eyebolts i, in which said block is hung, thus keeping the same with its thin side next the wheel while backing.
Secured in the front portion of the pushbar G, j ust back ofthe eye in which the tongueclevis b works, is a block, k, which prevents said clevis from pushing back too far, the block striking the king-bolt and stopping the brake when the wagon is backed.
Having now fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
.1. The tongue A, provided with a slot, d, and a clevis, b, in combination with the tongue- 'provided with rods c, equalizer K, and block 7c, the bar H, and brake-levers I, carrying eccentric rub-blocks J, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The eccentric rub-blocks J ,hung in eyevhounds B, slotted plates C, the push-bar G,
hereunto subscribed my name in the presence y of two witnesses.
' WILLIAM R. LONG.
