This invention relates generally to a novel type of window construction for use in homes, buildings and otherwise.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a window construction wherein the frame work is substantially of stainless steel or other materials having substantially the same physical properties and including a permanently fixed window half-section and a slidable window half-section adjustable to the location over the fixed window half-section and wherein a screen member is fitted in the opening beside the fixed window halfsection.
It is another object of the invention to provide a window construction including a fixed window section and a slidable window section wherein the slidable window section can be easily removed from the guide projections for removal or replacement.
It is another object of the invention to provide a metallic frame having non-corrosive, resilient and smooth characteristics for receiving the window and screen elements and which is formed from integral sheet metal pieces and wherein the metal frame is provided with simple means for securing the same within an outer frame of wood, metal or other material.
It is another object of the invention to provide a separable frame element. disposed intermediate the ends of the window construction having a vertically extending member of suitable material including rubber, plastic, composition or metal and serving as both a sealing element for the fixed window section and-as a stop for preventing the destruction of the slidable window element upon closing the same.
It is another object of the invention to provide a novel frame section for a window element comprising a U- shaped member recessed on the inner side for receiving the edge of the window glass and wherein the legs of the U-shaped section piece are rolled inwardly to receive a guide projection of the window frame assembly.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a slidetype window construction of stainless steel or other suitable material having the above objects in mind, which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble, compact, rugged, durable, has long life, is convenient to use and is efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring now to the figures, 15 represents an outer frame of wood, metal or other material comprising a bottom piece 16, end pieces 17 and 18, and a top piece 1h. It is understood that an opening in the building wall may serve as an outer frame. These outer frame pieces are joined together at the corners in the usual manner of connecting wood or metal end pieces together. All of the frame pieces are formed with the inner sides cut away to provide a recess by which a peripheral metal frame preferably of stainless steel and comprised of pieces 21 21, 22 and 23 may be respectively fixed and connected to the said frame pieces by means of respective wood, plastic or metal retaining members 24, 25, 26 and 27. These retaining members fitthe respective recesses of the outer, frame pieces and can be fixed therein by nails, screws or by any other conventional means so that the metal frame pieces will be held rigid in the outer frame.
On the inner side of the window construction, the metal rame pieces 2%, 21, 22 and 23 are respectively held by wood, plastic or metal retaining pieces 28, 29, 30 and 31 which likewise can be secured to the outer frame pieces by nails, screws or any other suitable means.
In order to effect the connection of the bottom metal frame piece 2t) tothe recess in the outer frame piece 16 as shown in Figures 5 and 9, the piece 20 has a downwardly extending flange 32 which enters the recess and against which the retaining piece 24 abuts. The piece 20 has a horizontal portion 33 that extends over the bottom outer frame piece 16 with an upstanding portion 34. Extending inwardly from this portion 34 is another horizontal portion 35 upwardly from which there is extended a rail or bead 36 over which the inner window frame element can slide in a manner to be later described. From this rail portion 36 there extends downwardly an inner flange 37 which is turned inwardly at the bottom as indicated at 38 to provide a lip which will engage with the top surface of the outer frame piece 16. The retaining piece 28 abuts the metal portion 37 and there is some resiliency in the upstanding bead or rail 36 so that the portion 37 will be retained againstthe retaining piece 28 in a resiliently tight manner.
The other metal pieces of stainless steel or similar material 21, 22, and 23 of the peripheral frame are of similar section and respectively have beads or resilient rails 39, 40 and 41. The rails 36 and at! in the respective bottom and top metal pieces 20 and 23 serve as slides along which an inner window half-section element 52 can slide.
This window 42 comprises a window frame of four metallic or-stainless-steel frame pieces 43, 44, 45 and 46. The frame pieces 43, 44, 45 and 46 are joined together at the corners of the window element, as shown in Fig. 6, by L-shaped members 47 and 48. The ends of the window frame pieces are cut at an angle of degrees and are joined together as shown at 49 and will thereby be held by the members 47 and 48 which are preferably secured to the window frame pieces by welding.
Each of the window frame pieces 43, 44, 45 and 46 has a U-shaped portion 50 for receiving the edge of a transparent window pane 51 and the edges of this window pane are made secure within the U-shaped portion 50 by a channel strip 52 preferably of plastic.
The legs of the U-shaped portion 50 are elongated and bent to provide the side faces of the frame piece. One leg is bent as indicated at 53 to provide a face portion 54, and the outer edge is rolled inwardly to provide a rolled edge 55. The opposite leg of the U- shaped portion is bent as indicated at 56 to provide the face portion 57, the end of which is rolled inwardly to provide a rolled edge 58. Leg face portions 54 and 57 are resilient whereby a tight spring action is effected on the rails such as 39. Between these edges and 53 is a space 59 for receiving the bead or rail of each of the peripheral metal frame pieces 20, 21, 22 and 23. The bead or rail is adapted to fit this space between rolled edges 55 and 58 resiliently and tightly and where necessary, face portions 54 and 57 can be expanded in order that a tight slidable grip can be made upon the rail and in order to make the window frame weathertight. The window element and frame 42 can slide the full length of the window and as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 9, can be easily removed from the Window by lifting the window element frame slightly so that the rolled edges of the window element frame at the bottom can be made free of the rail 36.
In the bottom window element frame piece 43 is a wear-strip 60 which will engage the upper edge of rail 36 so that the lead upon the U-shaped window frame piece is sustained as the window element is slid along the rail 36 and under its own weight.
On the front of the window is a fixed window half-section 62 which is approximately one-half of the length of the window and of the same size as the window element and frame 42. This window element 62 is fixed between the upper and lower metal frame pieces 23 and 20 and the end piece 22. The rubber orplastic strip 63 is provided in these pieces to receive the window pane 64, and this strip is made secure to particular metal frame pieces of the peripheral frame.
Intermediate the length of the window is verticallyextending metallic frame piece 65, Fig. 2, which has a pocket portion 66 for receiving a resilient or plastic strip 67 which holds the edge of the window pane 62. This frame piece is folded on itself and has a portion 68 for receiving the frame of a screen element 69. This portion 68 has a double bent, inwardly-extending flange portion 70 having a resilient stop strip 71 adapted to be engaged by a flange 72 of the window element frame piece 46 of the window element frame 42. This serves as a stop for limiting the sliding movement of the window element and frame 42 toward a closed position and also provides for a sealing engagement to prevent any leakage of air or rain between the window element and frames 42 and 62. Instead of using a stop strip 71, spring and Wedge action may be accomplished by flange 72 having an inwardly directed hook 72a while the double bent flange 70 may terminate in an outwardly directed hook 70a so that book 72a resiliently and tightly contacts double flange 71 and hook 70a contacts hook 72a and the adjacent wall of frame 46 resiliently and tightly as shown in Figure 2 as an alternate construction. On the side frame piece 44 of the window element frame 42 is a pin projection 73 for holding the vertically slidable latch and hand grip member 74, Figs. 1 and 7. This latch 74 has vertically spaced handles 75 and 76 and a side handle 77. On the member 74 is a latch projection 78 adapted to engage over a book 79 which is welded to the vertically extending frame piece 21 of the peripheral frame. The projection 73 extends through a vertically extending elongated slot 30 and projections 81 and 82 engage the sides respectively of the window piece 44 to guide its vertical movement. The projection 73 has a head formation to hold the handle latch 74 against outward displacement from the window frame piece 44.
A handle 83 is secured to the opposite window frame piece 46 of the window frame 42, as shown in Fig. 1 to serve as a handle for slidably opening or closing the window element frame 42.
The screen element 69 comprises a metal frame 84 having a bottom top and side frame 85, 86, 87 and 88. These said frame pieces are formed of sheet metal and are bent to provide an outer face portion 89 which is rolled inwardly at 90, an inner face portion 91 which is recessed as indicated at 92 to receive a screen rod 93 by which screen material 94 is attached to the frame 84. The inner face portion 91 is rolled inwardly as indicated at 95 to provide a rolled edge adapted to engage with a folded retaining member 96. This folded retaining member has a portion 97 which is welded to each of the metal frame pieces and has an edge for receiving the rolled edge 95. The retaining member 96 has its edge downwardly turned and will guide the screen against inward and outward displacement. The rolled edge 90 will engage the outer side of the upstanding portion of the retaining member 96.
In order to prevent the sliding window frame element 42 from being removed when in its closed position, there is provided a metal strip 98, Figs. 4, 5 which extends only half way across the window opening. This strip 98 engages with the top metal frame piece 23 of the peripheral frame and has a vertically extending portion 99 (Fig. 9) engaging with portion 101 of the piece 23. Portion 99 is limited in its vertical movement by engagement with a horizontal portion 102 of the frame piece 23. The strip 98 has an upstanding portion 103 against which the frame piece 45 of the window element and frame 42 engages to limit the upward movement of the window and frame 42. Rolled edge 104 of this window element frame piece 45 engages with a bracket of portion 103 and thereby the window element and frame 42 can not be elevated until it is slid beyond end 105 of the metal strip 98, Fig. 5.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 9, the outer window half-section is made to slide. The construction of the outer window element and frame is shown 110. This outer window element and frame has a metal frame 111, similar to the metal frame of the inner window element and frame 42. It can also slide along retaining members 96 removably secured to the frame pieces of the peripheral frame. The window frame is held against outward displacement by its engagement with the said retaining members. The said retaining members are made removable in order to remove the window element and frame 110.
In Fig. 8, there is shown another modified form of the invention wherein the window element and frame is removable from the peripheral metal frame. This window element and frame is indicated generally by and has a frame retainer 121 which holds a rubber or plastic strip 122 in which the window pane 123 is fixed.
- The element 121 is turned over to hold the strip 122 both Window elements and frames are slidable, an arrangement similar to the vertical member 65 can be used, except that the stop strip or sealing member 71 would be held by the sliding outer window and frame 110.
It should now be apparent that there has been provided a type of slide window construction for interiors or exteriors of buildings and homes wherein the window I includes an outer frame of wood metal or other material to which metal pieces are attached for the containing of the window and screen elements. It will be apparent as shown in the form of the invention shown in Fig. 1 that one of the elements can be fixed to the peripheral frame, while the other one is slidable. It is also shown that the screen element can be installed in front of the slidable window element.
As shown in Fig. 9, it will be seen that two window elements and frames can be slidable. A top metal piece 98 holds the inner window element and frame 42 against removal when in its closed position. In order to remove this window element and frame 42, it is necessary that it be slid to its full open position and beyond the end 105 of the metal piece 98.
The metal pieces herein described are preferably of stainless steel since such material is resilient, non-corro sive and possesses a low coefficient of friction.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention, as defined by the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A window construction comprising an outer frame body, a metal frame fixed within the outer frame body, said metal frame having hollow rail formations, an inner window element slidable along the rail formations, retaining members secured within the metal frame, an outer Window element fixed to the retaining members, each of said retaining members having a flange portion for securement of the retaining members to the metal frame and having rolled portions, said inner window element having frame pieces with inwardly rolled edges frictionally and resiliently engageable with both sides of said rail formations and one of the said edges being engageable with one of the flange portions of the retaining members.
