J. EQSTEPHENS. LAMP ST0YE. q: No. 286.862. j Patented 0ct. 16,'1883/.
mm STATES PATENT OFFIC n JOHN E. STEPHENS, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH TERRITORY.
LAMP-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,862, dated October 16, 1883.
Application filed May 1!). i883. (No model.)
F0 ail whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN EDWARD STEPHENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and Territory of Utah, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Lamp-Stoves, named by me and known as The Salamander, and I do declare the following to be a 'full, clear, and exact description or the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lamp-stoves for burning coal-oil or petroleum, the object being to produce a portable stove or heater adapted to be placed in the fire-box of a cooking or heating stove, whereby the expense of fuel is reduced, and the inconvenience of undue heat during the summer months avoided; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my heating apparatus. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cover. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the device with the cover removed, showing the frame for holding the oil-mat in position; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the heater. 7
The letter A represents ametal tank or reservoir, in which the o'ilis placed. The top of the reservoir is provided with aflange, a. Over the reservoir A, resting on the flange a, is placed an oil-mat, B,which rests on and is supported by a wirefframe or grate, b, in the top of the oil-reservoir, as shown in Fig. 4. This oil-mat B is composed of cotton, plaster-of paris, and asbestus, and is for the purpose of absorbing the oil and rendering it non-explosive. The mat B is held firmly in place on the reservoir by a metal frame, 0, provided with a flange, c,whieh rests on the edges of the mat all around, the mat being between the flanges a and c. The frame 0 and reservoir A are secured by bolts or rivets passing through the mat and the flanges a and o.
the frame 0 and rests on the flange 0.
D represents the cover, which is placed over This cover D is provided with air openings or holes (2 d around its sides for promoting combustion. In the cover D are out two holes or apertures, d (I, each of which is provided with a collar, 6. Over each collar eis slipped a perforated tube or flameconcentrator, E. These concentrators extend a suitable distance above the collars e e, andarefurnished with air-holes f f. Around each concentrator E, and concentric therewith, is a sheet-iron drum, F, standing on legs 9 9, attached to the cover D, as shown in Fig. 1. The drums F F are of larger diameter than the concentratorsE E,in order to leave an airspace between them. The drums are raised about half an inch from the top or cover D by means of the legs 9 9, thus affording openings for air,
thereby creating drafts and aiding combustion in the concentrators E. Over each of the concentrators may be placed, if desired, a perforated flat or cone-shaped cap, 7L, for the purpose of condensing the smoke. A lug, i, is cast on each end of the frame 0, to whichlugs a bail.
' ing-vessels placed above the tubes on the stove,
the concentration and combustion being facilitated by the drafts around the tubes E. By means of caps or extinguishers the flames can be extinguished or one side left burning.
It will thus be seen'that my invention affords a simple, effective, and safe lamp or heater, and one having no wick or burners.
Some of the advantages derived from this i11- vention are that it does not heat the roomin which the cooking is done, the heat being all concentrated on the vessels; it is ready [or use and can be put in operation almost instantly; it can beextinguished immediately, thereby economizing fuel and heat, and from its construction it is perfectly safe, the oil-mat avoiding any danger of explosion.
Having thus described my inventiomwhatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A lamp stove or heater composed of a tank or reservoir, A, oil-mat B, frame 0, having handle G, and the cover D, provided with the concentrator-tubes E and drums F, sub stantially as shown, and for the purpose de scribed.
2. The combination, in astove, withatank or reservoir, A, having flange a, of an oil-mat, B, and frame 0, having flange c, for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the tank A, having flange a, the oil-mat B, and the frame 0, having flange c, of a cover, I), having perfo- JOHN EDWARD STEPHENS.
