PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN I. HOKE, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
SULKY -PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent no. 286,540, dated October 9,1883.
Application filed April 14, 1883. (no model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J our: 1. Hone, of South Bend, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky- Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved means for operating the draft-tongue. Fig. 2 is an enlarged bottom view of the forward part of Fig. 1, showing the jointed tongue and the means for automatically locking and unlocking it by the draft of the team. Fig. 3 .is a perspective view for the purpose, of showing thebail or arched-axle support for the rear end of the plow, the lever for adjusting the same, and the device by which the. landside wheel is adjusted. Fig. 4 is a perspective view in detail, showing how the spring is applied to the bail or arched axle. Fig. 5 is a perspective view, showing how the spring-support for the draft-tongue is held and adjusted. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the device for adabout which the plow swings and by means of which the plow is flexibly attached to the sullry-frameu Fig.8 is a diagram showing the diiferent positions of lever X and .its slot,
ted. stub-axle slide in adjusting the landsidewheel.
This invention relates to novel improvements on archedaxle sulky-plows; and it consists in certain novel devices, which'will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings. 4
I will here state that many of the devices and combinations of. devices which Ishall herein describe and claim are improvements on Lotters Patent which have been previously granted to me. The arched or bail axle d is round in cross section, and to its left or landside end is bolted a vertical guide, V, to which is applied the slide U, bearing the stub-axle f which slide, with its axle f is adjusted by means of an angular lever, X, turning about a pin, X, and throwing its wrist-pin X forward and backwardin a slot, W, formed in the head of the slide U, as indicated inFig. 8. The slot W extends farther to the right of the vertical center of slide U than to its left, and the angular lever X is pivoted to the left of the vertical center of guideV. This arrangement of the parts causes the lever X to lift more vertically over the center of the load, and enables this lever to lift through aspace equal to twice the length of the short arm ihereof, as indicated in Fig. 8. Lever X is held in position by a toothed segment and latch, in the usual manner.
In this machine the plow is swung directly on the baiIZ by a broad loop, a, while the bail itself is connected to lever Y by a leafspring, T; (Shown in Figs. 3 and 4.) The lever Y turns loosely on the crank end of the said .bail. The spring T is rigidly attached to the bail and loosely to the leverbyaloop, t. The lever thus presses against spring T at t, which turns bail Z through its rigid connection therewith.
It is obvious thatthe support for the plow is a spring-support, enabling the plow to run undisturbed by the vertical motions of the sulky, caused by the wheels passing over uneven ground. Lever Y is secured by a toothed segment and latch to frame 0, in the usual manner. The furrow side or arm of the axle d is bent slightly forward to carry its wheel on axle-arm f clear of the earth as the. plow turns it. The U-shaped part 0 of the sulkyframe and the axle d are connected by a wooden frame, K, to the front end of which latter is bolted the jointed tongue, at D, and the draft-tongue articulates vertically on bolt 1), and its motion in this direction is limited by the flexibility of a leaf-spring, J, the free end of which is held by an adjustable loop, L, secured to the frame or beam K, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5.
Beneath loop L (see Fig. 3} is shown a footrest for the driver when on his seat, and by. the side of this foot-rest I show an extension, M, of the tongue F, which serves as afootplowbeam by the'king-bolt or pin P. The
2 nseam 7 passed, by simply removing the foot from extension M the spring J will return the parts back to their normal positions. By means of loop L the pitch or dip of the plow can be regulated and the plow set for any kind of soil.
The jointed tongue G is hinged at H, and to its bottom side is fixed the double or heart shaped cam E. (Shown clearly in Fig. 2.) A
latch, 1), plays back and forth on the under side of section F of said tongue. Through staples, and near the nose of the latch D", the end of aconnectingrod, 0, passes through a hole in an offset shoulder, K. The rod 0 has a collar, 0 on it, by which it pushes latch D" into the notch of cam E when locking the tongue.
beam.
The said connecting-rod 0 extends backward and downward, and then, by a square turn, its.
rear end passes under the front end of the plowbeam, and terminates in an eye, 0", through which draw-bar B slides freely. The extent of play given to the latch D is determined by the position of a nut, 0, which is adjustable forward or backward on the draw-bar B. The front end of the draw-bar passes freely through a hole in the clevis S; By means of aslot through thisclevis (see Fig. 6) it can be adjusted up or down to regulate the direction of the draft. This clevis is bolted to the clip N, that is rigidly fixed to the front end of the plow- For clearness of description, the clip N may be called the fixed part of the clevis, and S the adjustable piece through which the draft-rod passes. As the team starts, the draftrod B, by means of nut 0 and rod 0, throws the latch against the inclined side of heartcam E, and, as the team pulls, the tongue will be straightened and locked. Then the team stops pulling, the tongue is free to move either to the right or left, and the plow is drawn around as in my patent above referred to.
It will be seen that by means of the adjustable finger b which is provided with a setscrew, 1), and through which the long loop a passes, the plow can be held rigidly at one place on the bail Z,- or by loosening the setscrew b it can be allowed to swing free.
It is obvious from the above description that I have not only added to, but that I have taken from, the machine heretofore patented to me devices for the purpose of more fully and practically carrying out and perfecting my machine, and it will now be seen that I have a machine which is better arranged for the purpose of turning a sod with a sulkyplow.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
adjustable loop, through which loop a passes freely, a plow-beam, a vertically-adjustable bail, and a lever fixed to one of the cranked arms of this bail, and a spring, T, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
3. For the purpose of actuating the bail Z from which the rear portion of the plow is suspended .the hand-lever Y, the spring T, and its loop t, applied to the said bail, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the extensions of the U-shaped frame back of the arched axle, the vertically-movable bail, the plow suspended from this bail, and laterally adjustable by means of along loop and slide, a leaf-spring, and a hand-lever connected thereto loosely, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
5. The combination of the bail Z, the frame 0, the hand-lever Y, the spring fast on the furrow end of the said bail, and the loop t, and the notched segment and -catch, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
6. The combination of the jointed tongue, the plow-beam, a draft-tongue, articulating vertically, a spring, J, an adjustable loop for I thisspring, and the beam K, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
7. The combination of the spring J the extension M, the tongue F, and the loop L, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the mannerand for the purposes described.
8. The combination of the jointed tongue, hinged at H, the heartshaped cam, the latch, the actuating parts of this latch, and the section F, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner, and for the purposes described.
9. The combination, with the heart-shaped cam, its latch, the connecting-rod, the drawbar, and the clevis, all constructed and adapt ed to operate substantially in the manner and for the puposes described.
10. The combination of the double or heartshaped cam, the connecting-rod passed th rough a hole in an offset shoulder, K, the collar 0', and the adjustingnut on said connecting-rod, all constructed and adapt-ed to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
. I g, h V I j 11. The combination, in a sulky-plow, of In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 10 a sectional pivoted tongue, having a joint my own I affix my signature in presence of which admits of lateral movement, a joint two witnesses. which admits of vertical movement, on auto 1 matic engaging and disengaging device, and a, s oring which passes through an adjustable loop, all constructed and adapted to operate Vitnesses:
