Beyond the reach zone the type bar mechanism is propelled by the action of a pivoted weight or momentum accumulator to complete the printing stroke free of the influence of the power mechanism. As shown 7 in the patent referred to, the escapement is controlled by the action of the type bar mechanism and the escapement load tends to dampen the momentum imparted to the type by operation of the weight.
An object of the invention therefore is to provide means for operating the escapement without in any manner effecting the thrust operation of the type mechanism or by placing a load thereon that would decrease the speed of operation.
A further object of the invention is to so actuate the escapement mechanism from the power mechanism that, in the initial stage of operation of the latter, power will not be applied to the escapement operation and the full thrust of the type will be unrestrained.
Still further objects of the invention are: to closely define the limits of power applied to the type bar mechanism andto adjust the operation of the escapement so that it occurs at precisely the proper time with respect to the printing operation of the type bars; to provide for adjustment of the reach zone so that each individual type bar actionand its power mechanism can be closely coor dinated in action, to make use of said adjustment to control the timing of the escapement action; and to free the type action for full thrust so that not only speed and accuracy of typing are attained but maximum manifolding is possible in a machine of the noiseless type.
Other objects and structural details of the invention will be apparent from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Fig. l is a view in side elevation of the type bar mechanism as employed in a noiseless typewriter and the power mechanism used in the operation thereof; the escapement control being indicated, the view showing the parts in normal non-operating position;

Referring to the drawings in detail 10 indicates generally the frame of the machine to which may be pivoted as at 11 the type bar segment 12 which, in the well known manner is adjustable to shift the case of the different characters Be and Xx carried on the faces of the forward bifurcated portions 13 and 14 of the type bar 16 which is pivotally mounted on the upper ends'of guide links 17 and 18. In view of the fact that thetype' bar action 20 is common in principle to the type bar action of the Remington Noiseless Typewriter, as disclosed'in the above patent, only sufficient explanation of the parts will be given herein to show the operation as employed in combination with the power mechanism 19 controlled by the keys 21 and generally shown in Patent 2,638,199. Each unit of the type bar action 20 consists of a single type bar 16 operable to print two different characters and, with its operating levers, is mounted on a hanger 22 secured to the type bar segment 12. Each type bar is guided in the slots 23 of a segmental shaped guide 24 mounted on the rear portion of the bar segment 12 and is thrust forward in printing action by the operation of twin throw arms 26 pivoted to said hanger and connected across their foot portions 27 by a curved rocker plate 28. The latter has bearing thereon, in rocking engagement, the cam shaped ends 29 and 31 of sublevers 33 and 32, respectively, the former of which is extended as at 34 for connection, through a link 35, with a bell crank lever 36 pivoted as at 37 on an extension 38 of said hanger 22. The limit of the swinging movement of the sublever 33 about its pivot 39 is defined by a pin and hole combination or reach stop 40, and a similar movement limiting arrangement 41 is employed in connection with the sublever 32. The movement of the sublevers alters the posi tion of the pivot at the lower end of the guide link 18 so that the different type e or x are projected for writing on the platen 42 depending upon which sublever is pulled down by its depending link. The sublever 32" is connected by a link 43 with one end of an operating roller lever 44 while the sublever 33 is connected by a link 46 with a similar operating lever 47. The levers 44 and 47, each carrying a roller 48, are pivoted as at 49 in the lower portion of the bar segment and are paired with respect to each type bar action 20. Each lever is biased upwardly at its link supporting end by a spring 51 which also keeps the respective roller in surface contact with the working edge 52 of an operating lever bar 53, one of each of which is provided for each operating lever and for each power mechanism unit 19.
In Fig. 1, two keys 21 are shown, each of which is connected to and controls the operation of its power mechanism unit 19. Generally, each unit derives its power from a constantly driven power roll 54 so that when an eccentric roller 56 is rotated into engagement therewith by operation of a key lever controlled train of parts 57 as shown in Patent 2,638,199 a power arm 58 is lifted and through a stud 59 rocks a bell crank cam 6 clocka Wise against the resistance of a spring 61. The bell crank is shaped to provide, on a lower free depending edge, a cam surface 62 terminating in a cam dwell 63 for operational engagement with a cam roller 64 carried on a cam lever 66 pivoted as at 67 to a vertical operating link 68. The latter is pivoted to the inner end of the operating lever bar 53 to pull the latter in tilting movement about its fulcrum rod 69 which, like the fulcrum rod 71, is common to the parts mounted thereon and is supported from one of a plurality of cross bars 72 extending between the side frames of the machine.

The adjusting dog 74- co-acts with the screw 73 to limit the downward movement of link 68, toprovicle a positive action free from overthrow and to enable each reach stop to be accurately adjusted to allow complete printing impact by the type before the escapernent is actuated to cause letter space movement of the platen. Thisadjustment is made by turning the screw 78 so that, when the roller 64 is at the dwell 63 of cameo the, pin -4100f the reach stop 41 is in position to arrest'any further movement of therespective sublever, substantially. as illustrated --in Fig. 2. Thereafter the continued. swinging movement .of the bell crank cam 60 will, under force'ofthepower mechanism, cause operation of the. escapement as. shown 1 in Fig. 3. -When the screw78 is turned, --the dog-7:4,if being adjusted counterclockwise;willpull-on link 73-to '1 cause the roller-64 to engage the dwell 63 of the cam 60 and at the same time pulldown on link 6%. The latter,
- as above explained, will rock the associatedsublever until ..the..pin,..of..the. reach. stop associated with said sublever is in its limit position. The adjustment is made by rocking the cam 6% until the dwell thereof is in position to be engaged by the roller 64 when the latter is forced into contact therewith by operation of the screw 78. At the same time the link 68 is pulled down and the link 46 swings the sublever 33, for instance counterclockwise .untilpthe. reach stop, asyshown in Figs. 2 and 3, limits the movement'of the sublever. The -dwellr63 of cam 60 is not perfectly concentric with the pivot 71 but has a slight radial. pitch which: keepsthe reach stop in its limit. position and consequently prevents any change in location of the parts that have been set by the operation of the sublevers for proper pivotalthrow of the-type bars under influence of the momentum weight 98. While the adjusting means 75 has been described in connection with the escapement means it is evident that it can be employed for reach stop adjustment to take up wear and generally de- -.fine.the power operation andweight accelerated thrust action.
While I have described what Iconsiderto be a-hi'ghly desirable embodiment of :my: invention, it isobvious that many changes in form could be made without departing fromthespirit-of the invention, and I, therefore, do not limit myselfto the exact form herein ishown-and described, nor to:anything less than the-whole=of:myinvention as. hereinbefore set forthrand as. hereinafter claimed.

In .atypewriter, the combination .with-akey controlled power meansaand a noiseless type action operated thereby and including reach stop means for limiting the-extent of force applied. to said action by the power =means; of a train of parts connecting the power means and: the' type action including a cam operated by said power means, and an adjusting means actuated by-said cam for varying the extent of force:as controlled by said reach stop 'means.

In a typewriter, thecombination with a 'key controlled powermeans, anoiseless type action operated by the power means including reach stop means'for- 'defining "the; extent of force applied to the action"by-'-th e"power means, and an escapement-mechanisrn forcontrolling letter-spacing movements of the platenpof a train of parts including cam means connecting the power means and the type action, and means associated with said .cam means and operated thereby forcontrolling the operation of said escapement mechanism in coordination with the operation of said reach stop means.
6. In a typewriter having a type action including reach stop means for defining the limit of an initial movement of said action, key controlled power means for applying said initial movement to the action, movement transmitting means connecting the power means with said action, including an operating link, a bell crank pivoted to said link, a bell crank cam for operating said link through throw of said bell crank and means for manually adjusting the amount of throw of said bell crank to vary the limit of initial movement of said action through said reach stop means.

In a typewriter having an escapement mechanism for controlling letter spacing movements of a platen, a type action, key controlled power means for applying operating force to the action, said action including reach stop means for arresting the force applied thereto, linking means connecting said power means with said action including cam means operated by the power means, escapement operating bail means common to said cam means and adapted to be operated by the latter at the end of a predetermined amount of movement thereof, and means associated with said cam and linking means for adjusting the reach stop means in accordance with the predetermined movement of said cam means.

In a typewriter having an escapement mechanism for controlling letter spacing movements of a platen, a type key controlled power means for applying operating force to the action, said action including reach stop means for arresting the force applied to said action, linking means connecting said power means with said action including a cam operated by the power means, escapement operating bail means common to said cam and adapted to be operated by the latter, means for normally holding said bail means spaced from the cam, and means associated with said linking means and said cam for adjusting the reach stop means to force arresting position when the cam engages said bail means.

In a typewriter having an escapement mechanism for controlling letter spacing movements of a platen, a type action; key controlled power means for applying operating force to the action, said action including reach stop means for arresting the force applied to the action; means connecting said power means with said action including cam means actuated by the power means, an
6 operating link means, and adjusting means connecting the link means with said cam means; and escapement bail means common to said cam means for operation by the latter to actuate said escapement mechanism.
10. A typewriter of the character set forth in claim 9 in which said cam means presents a rise portion, a dwell portion and a portion for engaging said escapement bail means when said adjusting means is substantially at the junction of said rise and dwell portions of the cam means.
11. A typewriter of the character set forth in claim 10 in which said cam means beyond the dwell portion thereof provides a slight radial rise for maintaining said reach stop means at force arresting position and for taking up lost motion in the parts of said action.
12. A typewriter of the character set forth in claim 9 in which said cam means presents a rise portion, a dwell portion and a portion for engaging said escapement bail means when said adjusting means is substantially at the junction of said rise and dwellv portions of the cammeans and the reach stop means is in force arresting position.
13. A typewriter of the character set forth in claim 9 in which said adjusting means comprises a cam roller carrier pivoted to said link means, a pivoted adjusting dog, a link joining the dog and the carrier, and screw means for moving the carrier through said dog and joining link for adjusting the reach stop means with respect to said escapement bail means.
14. A typewriter of the character set forth in claim 9 in which said escapement bail means comprises bracket means mounting the bail for pivoted movement toward and away from said cam means and a stop associated with said ball means for limiting the movement of the bail means toward said cam means and for holding the bail means spaced from said cam means when the latter is in normal non-operating position.
15. A typewriter of the character set forth in claim 9 in which said adjusting means comprises a cam roller carrier pivoted to said link means, a spring biased dog pivotally associated with said carrier, and means for adjusting the carrier through said dog for regulating the reach stop means with respect to the relative positions of said cam means and escapement bail means.
