TURNING LATHE. No. 285,931. Patented Oct. 2, 1883 7 2 J A 3 q W F/ Z 14 Mia/67x71:

FRANCIS I-I. RICHARDS, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
TURNING-LATHE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,931, dated Oeiobcr 2, 188?.
Application filed February 13, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it-mrty con/corn:
Be it known that I, Framers H. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Inprovements in Lathes for Turning Irregular Forms,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvement-s in lathes for turning irregular forms; and it con sists in the combination, with a machine for this purpose, of a rotating former, of a tool carriage to move in the line of the axis of said former, of aformer-arm pivoted to said can riage, and supporting a tool-holder and cutting-toolon one end thereof, and means for imparting to the said former-arn1 pivot a motion diagonally or at right angles to the said axial line of said former, whereby the work being turned is shaped by the cooperative action of two different formers operating in the same machine at the same time.
In the drawings forming part of this speciiication, Figure I is a plan View, and Fig. II a side elevation, of a lathe embodying my invention. Fig. III is atransverse section, and Figs. IV and V are detail views.
In the drawings, A is the bed of the machine, having thereon the driving-shaft supports '0 in which is fitted in the ordinary mann era shaft, to the rear end of which are secured the pulleys n a, and its opposite end is provided with any well-known means for holding and rotating the piece I), which is to be turned and shaped, as hereinafter described. A support, 0, on said bed holds the center 1, by which one end of the said piece bis held in line with said shaft. The former e is fitted in any suitablemanner onto said driving-shaft, whereby it is rotated by the latter. A feed-screw, 0, for moving the carriage it along on the front side of said bed, is hung in the usualmanner on the latter, and is driven by a belt from pulley at on the driving-shaft to the pulley m on said feed screw, the latter being made to en gage with a suitable nut on the inner side of the carriage in the usual way. Said carriage h is provided with a pivot-shaft and eccentricsleeve box If, in which isfitted an eccentrically-bored sleeve, the circumferential line of which is shown in a dotted circle in Fig. I, and its side lines in Fig. II, in like manner. 'To
the lower end of said eccentric sleeve is secured the arm in, having a stud thereon, which engages in the groove 3 of a second former or guide, 2', secured on the bed A, to the under side thereof, as shown in Figs. II and III. Said sleeve, as aforesaid, is bored in a line eccentric to its axis to receive therethrough the piVOtshaftj, on the upper end of which the former-arm e is pivoted, the latter resting on the upper end of the boX h. Said former arm c is provided with a frietioirroll, i on its long arm, and connected with .the latter and to the carriage II, is a retracting-spring, 1', to hold said roll against the former at. T0 the short arm of said former arm or lev'er e" is attached the tool-holder case a, in which is located a tool-holder, 5, adapted to receive and carry in its upper end the cylindrical turning or cutting tool 00. The said tool-hol der 5 is screw threaded, as shown, and is adapted, by a system of differential gearing, partly shown in the drawings, and driven by the belt and pulley s, to be slowly rotated and given an upward movement while the lathe is being operated and the tool a: is cutting against the piece I). Said tool awhile in the act of cutting,is constantly sub jected to the grinding action ofthc emery-wheel f, whereby its upper or cutting end is kept in concave form and its edge sharp. The said wheel f is carried on a shaft, g, which is run in a support, 5 by the belt 9", running on pulley g.
The above partially-described devices for holding the tool 00 and for rotating it, moving it toward the piece being turned, and sharp ening it while it is cutting, are not the sub jeet of this application, but are reserved for protection by another application to be filed hereafter.
The former-arm 6 may, as shown in Fig. IV, be arranged so that the roller y can be located at different distances from theend of said arm, between the pins 2, whereby more or less 1u0- tion of the cutting-tool toward and from its work may be had. i
It is obvious that other forms of groove than that shown in the former may be employed, according to the work the machine may be re quired to do.
The operation of my improvements is as follows: A suitable former, 0, having been placed on the drivingshaft, the piece b is secured in IOC the machine, as shown, and the toolwis brought I to a proper position to engage with its work when thelatter is rotated. If it is desired to give the piece being turned anything more than the conformation of the former e-as, for instance, a taper form also-the arm 70 is engaged with the former i". The machine is run by a belt applied to the pulley n, and, being started up, the driving-shaft and the parts 1c connected thereto rotate the former 6 giving an oscillating motion to the arm 6 and causing the tool ac to be correspondingly moved in a di-' rection toward and from the piece I), and at the same time the carriage h is being moved along by the feed-screw 0, whereby the arm 0 and said tool are given a longitudinal movement, which carries the roll 3 along on the former a and the said tool from one end to the other of the piece I). The said movement of carriage h causes the said stud on arm 70 to be drawn along in the inclined groove 3 in the former '6", whereby said arm is given a swing ing motion ina horizontal plane, thereby turning the aforesaid eccentric sleeve in the box h, and moving the pivot-shaft i and the toolholder a toward or from the piece I), (according to the direction in which said slot 3 leads,) whereby, by the combined action of said two formers and the above-described supplement 3o ary parts of the machine, the piece I) is turned both tapering and to a form corresponding With that of the former a.
The former i" may, when no other form than that of the former a is to be given to the piece 3 5 b, be removed from the bed A, letting the machine operate without changing the position of the shaft 1' while the carriage h is moved along.
What I claimas my invention is- 1. In a lathe for turning irregular forms, a lathe-bed having a driving-shaft suitably sup-1 ported thereon and adapted to hold one end of and rotate the piece to be turned, a former fitted uponand adapted to be turned by said having a vibratory movement upon its pivot I inahorizontal plane, and having one end bearing 011 said former, and having a cutting-tool secured to its opposite end and by it held directly against the said piece, which is-held and rotated by said driving-shaft, combined and operating substantially as set forth. 7
2. In a lathe for turning irregular forms, a lathe-bed having a driving shaft suitably supported thereon and adapted to hold one end and rotate the piece to be turned, aformer fitted upon and adapted to be turned by said shaft, a tool-carriage adapted to be moved on said bed in a line with said shaft, aformer-arm pivoted 011 ashaft supported in said carriage,
having a vibratory movement upon its pivot in a horizontal plane and having one end bearing on said former, and having a cutting-tool secured to its opposite end and by it held directly. against the said piece, whic h is held and rotated by said driving-shaft, and means, substantially as described, for giving the said pivot shaft upon which said vibratory arm is mounted a movement in a direction across the axis of said driving-shaftwhile said carriage is being moved along on said bed, combined and operating substantially as set forth.
3. Ihe combination, with the carriage h and means, substantially as described, for moving it longitudinally on the bed A, of the former ifisecured to said bed, the eccentrically-bored sleev'e hung in said carriage and having the arm is thereon, the pivot shaft 1', passing through said slaeve, and the oscillating'toolsupporting and former-arm 6 substantially as setforth.
