4 Claims. (Cl. 206-46) This invention relates to improvements in display cartons, and more particularly to a folding display carton for padlocks and the like.

A padlock includes a block-like body portion from an end of which projects a lock shackle. The satisfactory packaging of a padlock within a compact carton presents a problem because of the extended shackle portion, and it is a primary object of the present invention to provide a folding display carton of compact form which, within the carton proper, will enclose the body portion of the padlock, the carton being further provided with a slotted top section and recessed top flaps which, when closed, cover the top end of the padlock body but permit the padlock shackle to projecttherethrough beyond the top of the carton, thereby facilitating the attractive display of the padlock on a dealers shelf.

A further more specific object of the invention is to provide a folding display carton for padlocks or the like arranged so that an end portion of the encased object may project outwardly of the carton for display purposes, a face of the carton and the top flap thereof being formed with a cut extent to provide, when the top flap of the carton is folded into its carton-closing relationship, an upwardly or outwardly projecting arrow tip to visually attract attention to the projecting portion of the encased object.

A further object of the invention is to provide a folding display carton which can be set up in a very simple manner from a one-piece blank.

A further, more specific object of the invention is to provide a folding display carton wherein the carton blank may be originally arranged with glued-together flaps and shipped in a fiat, collapsed condition susceptible of being easily set up by the user when goods are to be packed therein. I

A further object of the invention is to provide a folding display carton which is of very simple construction, which is strong and durable, which compactly and securely holds an article such as a padlock to attractively display essential features thereof, which is of unique appearance, and which is well adapted for the purposes described.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved display carton, and its parts and combinations, as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.

Referring now more particularly to Fig. 1 of the drawings it will appear that the improved blank for the folding display carton is of one-piece and of irregular contour. The material of the blank may be paperboard, cardboard or any other similar suitable material. The numeral 10 designates that portion of the blank which forms the front section of the carton when the carton is in its folded set up condition. Connected to one side margin of the front section 10 by a scored or fold line 11 is a rectangular end flap 12 carrying on its top and bottom margins a top flap 13 and a bottom flap 14, respectively, which in the set up condition of the carton are adapted to fold right angularly relative to the end flap 12 on fold lines 15 and 16. The top flap 13 has a U-shaped recess 17 therein.

Connected by a fold line 18 with the other side margin of the fold section 10 is a rectangular end section 19 having connected to its top and bottom margins by fold lines 20 and 21, respectively, top and bottom flaps 22 and 23 which are complementary to the previously mentioned top and bottom flaps 13 and 14. The top flap 22 has a U-shaped recess 17 therein.

The numeral 24 indicates a top section which is foldably connected to the upper edge of the front section 10 by fold lines 25 which are interrupted by a medially positioned line of cut 26 in the form of an obtuse angle extending into the top section 24. Also the side marginal portions of the top section 24 are separated from the adjacent edges of the top flaps 13 and 22 by lines of cut 27 and 28. The top section 24 is also formed with an elongated slot 29 rounded at its ends. Foldably associated with the outermost margin of the top section 24 by means of a fold line 30 is a top tuck-in tongue 31 of somewhat tapered formation.

Foldably associated with the outer marginof the endsection 33 by a fold line 34 is a bottom section 35. The

lowermost margin of the bottom section 35 carries a tapered tuck-in flap 36 which is separated from the bottom section 35 by an intermediate fold line 37 and scored lines 38 which facilitate the folding of the bottom tuck-in flap 36. The side margin of the bottom section 35 is separated from the adjacent margin of the bottom flap 23 by a line of cut 39.

The outermost margin of the back section 33 has associated therewith by means of a fold line 40, a relatively narrow securement flap 41 which, when the blank is folded in collapsed form for shipment, underlaps the end flap 12 and is secured thereto by an adhesive or other securing means. As thusconnected and as arranged for storage or shipment, the blankis folded into the condition shown in Fig. 2, wherein the front section 10 and end section 19 are in the same plane and the connectedtogether end section 12 and back 33 underlie the sections 10 and 19. In this condition the top and bottom 'flaps and tabs carried by the various sections project outwardly asshown inthe planes of the sections'to which they are attached.

The user will originally receive the display cartons in the form shown in Fig. 2. To set up the carton it is merely necessary to fold the end sections 12 and 19 at right angles tothe front section and this will cause theback section'33to'shift'into a'plane rearwardly of the front section but coincidingtherew'ith. Next, .the bottomflaps 14 and 23 are folded toward one' another at rightangles to the planes ofthe 'en'd sections '12 and 19 which carry them, andithe bottom'section 35 is folded over the bottomflaps 14 and 23. at'right angles to the plane of the back section 33, following which the bottom tuck-in flap 36 is turned upwardly and is'insertedinteriorly of'the'lower margin ofthe front section against the adjacent edges of the folded bottom flaps 14- and 23. The carton as'thus arrangedis then open at the top and may be packed with an article of merchandise such as a padlock. The block-like padlock body will be confined within the carton as shown in broken lines in Fig. 8 seated on the accompanying keys, but the padlock shackle will project outwardly of the open 'upper end of the carton. To close the carton and secure thepadlock therewithin the complementary top flaps 13 and 22 are folded toward one another at right angles to the planes of the end sections 12 and l9. The U-shaped recesses 17 and I7 insaid top flaps 13 and 22 engage around andaccommodate the projecting arms of the padlock shackle. Finally, the-top section 24 is folded toward a position atright angles to the'plane of the front section 10, and in sofolding the top section, the projecting end of the padlock shackle is passed through the elongated slot 29 in the top section 24. Finalsecurement of the top and complete closure of the carton is effected by tucking the top tuck-in'tongue 31 into the upper end of the carton against the-inner face of the back section 33 and adjacent the margins of the top flaps 13 and 22. The carton in its completely set up, closed and packed condition is as illustrated inFigs. 5, 6, 7 and 8.

A particular feature of the invention resides in the provision of a distinctive indicating arrow which is clearly visible frorn'the front and sides of the set up and closed carton and which serves to direct attention to the projecting portion of-the padlock or other article housed within the carton. This designating arrow or indicator 41 is originally in the plane of the front section 10 and-extended top section 924, but after the top section is folded at right-angles to. the front section the indicator or arrow =41 separates frorn the lower margin of the top section {24 along the cutlines 26 in the form of an obtuse angle, withthe result that said angular indicating portion 41 projects upwardly at the front of the set up carton-f above the' top rnargin of the front and above the closed top... The separation of the top section from the indicatingzportion 41 along the lines of severance 26 leaves an "angular recess 42 at the top of the carton when the carton is closed,.as best shown in Fig. 7.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the-improved display carton may be expeditiously stamped or die-cut fromflat stock which is formed with fold lines and lines of cut. But a single gluing operation is required to then connect the securing flap-41 to an inner portion of the end section 12 to permit the knockeddown carton to be stored and shipped in the condition of Fig. 2, from whichcondition a carton may be quickly set up andpacked as previously explained. The carton provides an enclosure for the body portion of an article such' as a padlock to be housed therein, but the top section' 24 permits'the top or shackle of the padlock to project outwardly of the carton for attractive and novel display purposes, and=whichalso permits the use of a cartonof smaller capacity than -would be required to encase an entire padlock. The top :flaps 13-and22 when in their folded condition permit the accommodation of the padlock shackle with the lodgment of the arms thereof within the 'U shaped recesses 17 and 17' 'of' sa'id"top flaps which aid in the securement of the padlock within the set up carton. The improved display carton is effective in use and besides providing a shipping enclosure for an article such as a padlock, it serves as a means for attractively displaying a portion thereof.

What is claimed as the invention is:

1. A display package, comprising a carton which includes foldably connected face, end and bottom walls wherein the end wallsare disposed at right angles to the face walls and the bottom Wallis disposed at right angles to the face and-endwalls to form a containerof rectangular form'in-cross-s'ection with atop section foldably connected to one of the face walls and having an elongated .siCt therein, the top section being securableat right. angles to the face and end walls to closethe carton, and a padlock having its body poition encasedby the carton with the padlock shackle projecting through the top section slot.

2. A padlock display package, comprising a shackleequipped. padlock; and a carton including foldably connected face, end and botom walls wherein the end walls are disposed at right angles to the face walls and the bottom Wallis disposed at right angles to the face and end walls to form a container of rectangular form in crosssection to encase the body of the padlock, and a top section with a line of fold between one of the face Walls and the top section intersected by a V-shaped line of severance extending into the top section, said top section also having an elongated slottherein, the top section being foldable at right angles tothe face and end walls to close the carton with the top section slot accommodating the. padlock shackle which projects exteriorly of the carton and above its top section, there being a V-shaped projection in the plane of the face wall to which the cover section is connected when the latter is folded at an angle to the face section, which projection extends beyond the adjacent edge of the face section parallel to the padlock shackletoattract visual attention thereto.

In combination, a shackle-equipped padlock,-and a display carton for packaging the padlock, said carton comprising foldably connected face, end and bottomwalls wherein the end walls are disposed at right angles to the face walls and'the bottom wall is disposed at right angles to the face and end walls to form a hollow container of rectangular form in cross-section encasing the bodyof the padlock, a top section foldably connected to one of the face walls and having an elongated, longitudinal slot therein with curved end portions, a top flap foldably connected to the upper edge of each end wall, each flap having a U-shaped recess therein, the top section being securable at right angles to the face-and end Walls in overlapping relation to the top flaps, when the latter are folded at right angles to the end'walls, to close the carton with the top flap recesses coinciding with the curved end portions of the top section slot and accommodating and embracing the projecting arms of the shackle of the padlock.

In a'package assemblage, a shackle-equipped padlock and a display carton for the padlock, said carton comprising foldably connected face, end and bottom walls wherein the end walls are disposed at right angles to the face walls and the bottomwall is disposed at right angles to the face and end walls to form a hollow container of rectangular form in cross-section to encase the body of the padlock, a top section, there being a line of folcl'between the upper. edgeof one of said face walls and the top section intersected by a V-shaped line of severance extending into the top section, said top section also having an elongated, longitudinal slot-therein, a top fiap foldably connected to the upper edge of each end wall, each flap having a recess therein, the top section being securable at right-angles to the face. and endwalls in overlapping relation to the top flaps, when the latter are foldedatright angles loathe end'walls, to-close the carton with the-top flap recesses coinciding with the end portions of the top section slot and accommodating and embracing the projecting arms of the shackle of the padlock, said line of severance in the fold line between the top section and face wall providing a V-shaped projection in the plane of said face wall when the top section is folded in its closed position, which projection extends above the plane of the top section forwardly of and parallel to the padlock shackle to direct visual attention to said projecting shackle of the padlock whose body is encased by the carton.
