Referring:more-particularly to the disclosure in the drawings and to the novel embodiment selected to illustrate the pres'ent'inveiitio'n, Fig. l shows the present invention embodied l'in la bed-lounge or beddavenport convertible from a lounge or davenport` l0 as V'shown in Fig. l to a double bed 11 as Ashown in Fig. 2, although the invention is applicableto any convertible upholstered piece. Such a bed or-lounge is shown provided with a iixed upholstered back 12 and side pieces 13 and 14 each of the latter providing an arm for the lounge or davenport, and multiple removable seat cushions and 16, the latter forming mattresses when the lounge or davenport is opened -or extended into a bed as disclosed in Fig. 2, where these cushions or mattresses are shown covered by a sheet or other suitable covering A.
The frame of the disclosed combination bed-lounge or bed-davenport is disclosed in Figs. 3 to 13, inclusive,
and includes a main or stationary frame .17 comprising end members each having spaced legs lor uprights 18 't and 19 and a horizontally disposed connecting member 21, preferably formed as angle iron bars to give substantial rigidity to the frame. The rear legs or uprights 18 are connected by spaced longitudinally extending members 22 and 23 also preferably formed as angle iron bars.
Connected to the skeleton frame 17 are two pivotally mounted frame sections 24 and 25 each provided with cushion or mattress supporting springs 26 (Fig. 3). The springs 26 of the inner frame section 24 are shown attached at their ends to spaced end bars 27 and 28 and at their sides to spaced side bars 29 and 31 extending longitudinally of the lounge-bed or davenport-bed. The springs 26 of the outer frame section 25 are similarly attached to spaced end bars 32 and 33 and spaced side bars 34 and 35, with the end and side bars of each frame section preferably being of angle shape. Each frame section may be reinforced by one or more brace members 36.
The two frame sections 24 and 25 are pivotally connected or hinged at their adjoining ends by connecting hinge plates 37 and 38 each rigidly afxed to a depending flange 39 on the adjacent end bars 27 and 32 and 28 and 33, by means of rivets or other suitable connecting means 41. These hinge plates are disposed in parallel planes or olfset 'with their adjoining ends overlapped (Figs. S and 9), the hinge plate 38 being spaced from the depending ilange 39 of the end bar 32 of the frame section by a shim or plate 42 through which the anchoring rivets 41 project. A rivet or other pivotal connection at 43 hingedly connects the hinge plates adjacent their lower overlapping ends as clearly shown in Fig. 9.
The inner frame section 24 is pivotally connected at its opposite ends at 44 to the horizontally disposed connecting member 21 at each end of the main or stationary frame 17 by means of a pivotal mounting comprising a plate or bar 45 (Figs. 5, l0 and 1l) rigidly secured at its upper end by rivets or other attaching means 41 and at its lower end is pivotally connected at 44 by a rivet or other pivotal mounting to the depending leg of an angle bracket 46, the horizontally disposed leg of this bracket being riveted or otherwise rigidly secured at 47 to the horizontal leg or flange of the adjacent angle or connecting member 21 of the stationary frame 17. Thus the inner frame section 24 is pivotally connected at its opposite ends to the end members 21 of the stationary frame 17, but with this pivotal mounting being located intermediate the length of the end members or bars 21 of the frame 17 and the end bars 27 and 28 of the movable inner frame section 24.
A relatively heavy tension spring 48 is provided at the opposite ends of the stationary frame 17 with one end 49 of each spring connected to a leg or upright 18 and the other end 51 connected to an end bar 27 or 28 of the inner frame section 24 inwardly of its pivotal mounting or connection 44, to thereby counter-balance and facilitate pivotal movement of this inner frame section 24 when moved to open or extended position or to closed or retracted position.
The outer frame section 25 is provided on each end bar 32 and 33 with a stop 52 (Figs. 5, 6, 7 and l2) in the form of an angle bracket 53 having its upstanding leg or ilange rigidly aixed by rivets or other securing means 41 to the adjacent depending flange of the end bars 32 and 33, and the outwardly projecting leg or ange of each angle bracket forming a stop or abutment adapted to engage the upper flanged surface of the end members 21 of the main or stationary frame 17 when the frame sections 24 and 25 are collapsed or retracted to sitting position as in Fig. 7. A lock 54 in the form of a flat plate is pivotally mounted adjacent one end by means of a rivet or pivoted connection 54a to each of the inturned anges on the spaced members or bars 21 and with the other end free to be swung beneath the inner end of the end bars 27 and 28 of the inner frame section 2@ to prevent tipping or collapse thereof when this inner frame section is extended to form a bed and occupied by a person in sleeping or reclining position.
The outer frame section 25 is provided at its opposite ends with a depending angle bar providing a leg 55 to the lower end of which is secured or mounted a roller or Caster 56. Each roller or caster 56 engages the iloor or supporting surface when the present assembly is collapsed -or retracted for use as a lounge, davenport, sofa or the like (Fig. 7) and also when the assembly is opened or extended for use as a bed (Fig. 5).
When the assembly is being opened or extended, or when it is being collapsed or retracted, the movable frame sections 24 and 25 are continuously supported by these legs and the caster or roller of each leg, with each caster or roller 56 forming a fulcrum supporting the weight and greatly facilitating opening and closing of the bed. In such movement, these front legs 55 tilt or incline and help to pull or move the frame sections 24 and 25 into parallel, aligned position in which the hinge members or elements 37 and 38 move to the aligned position shown in Figs. 5, 8 and 9, Aand the adjacent ends of the bars 27 and 32, and the bars 28 and 33, of the inner and outer frame sections 24 and 25, are disposed in abutting relation whereby to provide a rigid support and prevent collapse or sagging of these frames 24 and 25 at their pivotal mounting. ,This is accomplished without the necessity of any supporting legs or other auxiliary supporting means at or adjacent the hinge connection 43.
With the assembly opened or extended as in Figs. 2 and 5, the housewife or operator may quickly and easily move the locking plates 54, there being one at each end of the stationary frame 17, to the position shown in Fig. 13, whereby the inner frame section 24 is prevented from tilting as any tendency to tilt would cause the end bars 27 and 28 of this frame section to bear against the locking plates 54.
It will be apparent that when the upholstering is applied to the assembly as shown in Figs. l and 2, the operating mechanism is hidden from view. When the assembly is moved to its open or extended position to provide a bed, the cushions 15 and 16 serve as mattresses upon the inner and outer frame sections 24 and 25. if desired, the cushion 16 may be suitably attached to the outer frame section 25 so as to move therewith and the cushion 15 may be made separate from the cushion 16 or it may be joined thereto so that upon opening of the bed the upper cushion need only be folded back onto the springs 26 of the inner frame section 24.
When the movable frame unit, comprising the inner and outer frame sections 24 and 25, is folded or collapsed as when the article of furniture functions as a lounge or davenport (Figs. l and 7) the inner frame section 24 is received within the contines of the stationary frame 17 and the outer frame section 25 is disposed above the frame 17 with the stops or angle members 52 (Fig. 12) seating upon the bars 21 of the frame 17 and the casters 56 of the legs 55 seating upon the floor. These casters and legs support the movable frame unit in both seating and sleeping positions and thus provide a stable, rigid assembly. Furthermore, these casters 56 and legs 55 support the movable frame unit as it is moved from seating to sleeping position and back again, the legs moving from a vertical to various angles of inclination 5 in such movement with the casters providing a fulcrum about which the hinged assembly moves and helps to move or pull the sections 24 and 25 to fully extended or parallel position.
From the above description and the disclosure in the drawings, it should be evident that the present invention comprehends a novel bed-lounge or beddavenport that functions equally well as a sitting piece or as a bed, and provides an assembly that is extremely simple to operate and requires a minimum of effort to move to open or extended position or to closed or retracted position.
Having thus disclosed the invention, I claim:
A convertible bed-lounge assembly comprising a stationary frame extending longitudinally of said assembly and a collapsible frame unit pivotally connected to said stationary frame whereby the collapsible frame unit may be collapsed and folded inwardly onto the stationary frame when the assembly is used as a lounge for seating purposes or extended outwardly when the assembly is converted into a bed, said collapsible frame unit comprising an inner and an outer frame section pivotally connected together for movement about an axis longitudinally of the assembly, means for pivotally connecting the opposite ends of the inner of said frame sections to the opposite ends of the stationary frame including a bar carried by and rigidly affixed to the inner frame and pivotally connected to the opposite ends of the stationary frame, cooperating hinge' elements on the opposite ends of said inner and outer frame sections with each hinge element comprising a vertically disposed flat plate axed to and depending from each end of said inner and outer frame sections and extending longitudinally thereof with these plates arranged in parallel planes and the adjoining ends of these plates arranged in overlapping relation and these overlapping ends projecting beneath the adjoining frame section to provide a rigid support beneath and supporting adjoining sections forwardly of said stationary `frame and devoid of any other support therebeneath, and a pivotal connection between the overlapping ends of said plates for pivotally connecting a hinge element on an end of the inner frame section to a hinge element on the adjacent end of the outer frame section whereby the adjacent ends of the inner and outer frame sections abut with these hinge plates therebeneath and spanning the adjoining frame sections when these frame sections are fully extended to form a bed and provide a suspension mounting for rigidly retaining these frame sections in a substantially horizontal plane, and a locking plate pivotally mounted on the end of the stationary frame and movable into position beneath the adjacent end of the inner frame section when the bed is open.
