The present invention relates to an attachment for a sending and receiving telephone set frequently referred to as a French type telephone. This type telephone is provided normally with a rectangular or square base.

The primary object of the inventor is to provide an attachment that may be attached to the base of the telephone for supporting a writing pad for use principally during telephone conversations.

Another object of the invention is to provide a tray for the holding of pencils and/or pens, erasers, etc.

A further object of the invention is to provide the tray with a hinge at one side so that access to the tray may be readily accessible.

Still a further object of the invention is to provide the writing pad support with an adjustment longitudinally with its support.

Another further object of the invention is to provide the attachment with self closing drawers.

Still another objective of the invention is to provide the attachment with adjustable means for fastening it to the telephone base so that the attachment may be used for various size telephone bases.

While several objects have been set forth it is not intended as a limitation, as other objects, uses and advantages may become apparent as the nature of the invention is more fully disclosed. The invention consists in its novel construction, combination and arrangement of its several parts as shown and described in the following drawings and detail description.

Fig. I is a vertical side view of the attachment.

Fig. II is an enlarged sectional view taken along line 2-2 of Fig. I and shows the attachment in position adjacent a telephone base member.

Fig. III is a plan view of the attachment as shown in Fig. I.

Fig. IV is a plan view on a reduced scale of the attachment in its relative position adjacent the telephone base including its fastening means for fastening the attachment to the base.

In referring to the drawing like and similar reference numerals are to point out like parts throughout the several views.

The attachment comprises a support referred to generally as S. The support is provided with a bottom and

12 and 14. The side wall 14 is formed with an oifset 16 to accommodate a holding band 18. This holding band is preferably constructed of an elastic material, and means for adjusting its length, such as the snap fastener shown at 20. The olset portion 16 is adopted to fit against the side of the telephone base 22. The support is provided with a foot 12 to support the outer side of the support S and to take part of the strain put on the support when writing on the pad carried thereby. Slidably within the walls and bottom of the support is a drawer, having a bottom 24,

26 and 28 and ends 30 and 32. This drawer is slidable, longitudinally of the support and is normally held within the support by a 2,849,830 Patented Sept. 2, 1958 spring 36. One end of the spring 36 is fixed to an element 38 at one end of the bottom of the support, and the other end of the spring is attached to a member 40 carried by the drawer. The bottom 10 of the support S is slotted at 11 to allow the member 40 to pass therethrough. The ends 11 x 11" of the slot forms a stop to prevent the drawer from being drawn beyond the support both when it is manually withdrawn and moved inwardly by the spring. This drawer is for holding pencils, pens, erasers and the like to be used in writing. Fixed to the end of the drawer is'a knob 44 for manually moving the drawer out of the support against the tension of the spring 36.

The side 14 of the support adjacent its upper edge is provided with an extension 14. This extension 14 extends over the top of the base adjacent the edge resting against the side of the base to which the attachment is secured. The extension 14 is provided with a bottom portion 46, a top portion 48 and a side portion 50 which extends outwardly for a short distance toward the bottom 10 of the support S and is adapted to engage the upper edge of the side wall 28 of the drawer, to form a guide for one side of the drawer. The upper edge of the wall 12 of the support S is provided with a formed portion having an outer vall 52, a top 5'4 and an inner wall 56 extending downwardly for a short distance to form a guide for the side 26 of the drawer.

Over the top of the support there is provided a plate 58. This plate is hinged at one side of the support by having a raised portion 58' and a lip 58 extending downward from the raised portion 58. This lip extends through a slot 60 which extends through the wall 48 of the extended member 14. By this construction, the plate may be raised and lowered, or removed from the support, as the case may be. The outer side of the plate is supported on the wall 54 at the upper edge of the wall 12. Extending over one end of the plate 58 is a band 62 for clamping a pad 64 of writing paper. The plate 58 is held downwardly on the supports by a coiled tension spring 66. This spring is under tension having its ends fixed to the support S by

68 and 70. The center section of the spring 66 is sligthly elevated and extends through a channel 72 formed by an extended U shaped bracket 74 extending close along the under side of the plate 58. This holds the plate in contact with the upper edges of the support when in normal resting position, but will give to allow the plate to be moved about its hinged point 58.

Such an attachment is neat and practical in its use and operation and can be readily formed of sheet metal or from one of the synthetic plastics.

While the invention has been illustrated and described for a particular form, it is not intended as a limitation as the invention is best delined in the appended claims.

I claim:

l. An attachment for a sending and` receiving telephone set including a base and at least one elongated straight side for supporting a writing pad comprising, an elongated support member having a bottom and two side walls, one side of the support adapted to lit against the straight side of the telephone set base, means for holding the side of the support adjacent the said telephone set base in contact with the base, a tray having a bottom and side walls of substantially the same length as the bottom and side walls of the support slidable between the side walls of the support having its ends normally held adjacent the ends of the support by a resilient member, said tray being slidable outwardly from one end of the support, the resilient member having one end fixed to the support and its opposite end fixed to the tray, a writing pad support having one side thereof hingedly connected to the rst mentioned support adjacent the upper edge of the side of the first mentioned support adjacent the telephonev base, the writing pad support extending over the upper edges of the side walls of the rst mentioned support and adapted to be held in a horizontal position thereby, a resilient member adapted to resiliently hold the writing pad support in Contact with the upper edges of the side walls of the rst mentioned support and means for holding one end of a writing pad in contact with the upper surface of the Writing pad support.

2. An attachment as claimed in claim 1 in which the first mentioned support is provided with a horizontally extended element adapted to extend over the upper edge of the telephone base for preventing the attachment from moving downwardly in relation to the base beyond a predetermined point.

3. An attachment as claimed in claim 2 in which the means for holding the attachment in contact with the first mentioned support is adjustable for ditlercnt size telephone bases.

4. An attachment as claimed in claim 2 in which the resilient means for holding the Writing pad support downwardly on the upper edges of the side Walls of the first mentioned support has its ends attached to one of the side walls of the first mentioned support and its intermediate section slidably supported to and adjacent the under surface of the writing pad support.
