Description
1958 F. J. YOUNG- 2,848,243
BOAT HAULING mavzcss Filed Oct. 29. 1956 INVEN TOR. RHNK- J.' you/v6 wwmz ATTQRNIY United States Patent This invention relates to improvements in boat hauling devices, and more particularly to a novel device of the type adapted for hauling a boat by automotive means.
An object of the invention is to provide devices of the type which may be used in hauling a boat in inverted position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an assembly which may be quickly and easily attached to a boat for hauling the latter.
Another object of the invention is to provide economical spring-mounted means for hauling a boat or the like.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view in elevation of a boat equipped with hauling devices embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the boat showing how the wheel assembly may be folded forwardly out of the way of the occupant.
Fig. 3 is a side view partly in elevation and partly in section of a wheel and mounting therefor.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 refers to the drag plate which may be attached to the boat 11 by appropriate means 12 and is apertured at 13 in a conventional construction for connection with a towing vehicle.
As shown in Fig. 1, the boat 11 is towed in the inverted position, and a pair of channels 14 and 15 form a rest for the gunwales 16 and 17 of the boat. Each channel 14 and 15 has a laterally disposed car 18 and 19 apertured as at 20 to register with the bore at 21 of the oar-lock mounting bracket 22. A bolt 23 is provided with a wing nut 24 to releasably secure the channel ear 18 to the oar-lock mounting bracket 22.
A leaf spring 25 is pivotally secured by the bolt 26 to each channel, and the opposite end 27 of each spring 25 is secured by a clevis 28 to the axle 29 which latter carries the ground bearing wheels 30.
In use, the drag plate 10 may be permanently attached to the boat if desired, and the channels and assembly may be removed, but if desirable, the wheel assembly need not be detached but may be rotated forwardly on the bolts 26 to a position out of the way of the boat user.
It will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. An assembly for hauling an inverted boat equipped with oarlock mounting brackets, a drag plate for attachment to an end of said boat, a pair of channel members for receiving the gunwales of the boat, an ear on each channel apertured for connection with an oar-lock mounting bracket of said boat, a leaf spring pivotally attached on a horizontal transverse axis to each channel, an axle secured to the free ends of the springs, and ground-bearing wheels mounted on said axle.
2. An assembly for hauling an inverted boat equipped With oar-lock mounting brackets, a drag plate for attachrnent to an end of said boat, a pair of channel members for receiving the gunwales of the boat, an car on each channel laterally disposed and apertured for con nection with an oar-lock mounting bracket of said boat, a leaf spring pivotally attached on a horizontal transverse axis to each of the channels, an axle secured to the free ends of the springs, ground-bearing wheels mounted on said axle, and bolt means for releasably securing said ears to said oar-locks.
