Description

Aug. 19, 1958 HYMAN STAIRWAY COVERING Filed Oct. 3, 1955 1N VEN TOR. LEO HYMAN United States Patent STAIRWAY COVERING Leo Hyman, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application October 3, 1955, Serial No. 538,128
2 Claims. (CI. 20-79) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in carpet and stairway coverings.
More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved stairway covering including a novel carpet nosing construction which will help prevent falls by holding a carpet perfectly level at the end edges and which will increase the useful life of stairway carpeting.
As a further object, the present invention proposes forming the nosing construction with an angle plate having a tread leg and a riser leg to fit over the nose of a stair and provide a satisfactory installation of any carpet on a stairway regardless of the type or direction of weave.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective sectional view of a part of a stairway with a carpet nosing construction which is constructed and arranged in accordance with the pres ent invention,
Fig. 2 is a side view of a stair showing one tread and riser carpeted using the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view similar to Fig. 1 but illustrating a modification of the present invention.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but illustrating another modification of the present invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the stairway carpet nosing construction, in accordance with the first form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 is designated generally by the reference numeral and is shown on a stairway 16.
Stairway 16 has risers 17 and treads 18 with curved nose or edge portions 19. Spacer members 20 and 21 are provided adjacent the inside corners 22 of the risers and treads on the risers and treads respectively to space carpet 23 from the risers as shown.
An angle plate 24 having a tread leg 25 and a riser leg 26 has its apical portion fitting flush over the nose 19 of each stair. Tread leg 25 has a carpet recess 27 in its rear portion 28 to receive and hold the marginal edge portion 29 of carpet 23. The rear portion 28 of tread leg 25 also has a carpet pad abutting edge 30 and a resilient carpet pad 31 fits on the stair tread between the spacer member 21 and the rear portion 28 of tread leg 25 of the angle plate 24.
Riser leg 26 of the angle plate 24 has a lower end portion 32 adapted to fit adjacent the next riser 33 of the next lower stair or step and securely hold the upper end 34 of the next carpet piece 35.
The modification of the invention illustrated in Fig. 3
is characterized by the provision of an angle plate having a tread leg 41 and a-riser leg 42. The tread leg 41 has a carpet holding recess 43 in its rear portion 44 and spaced screws 45 extend through the rear portion 44 to hold the plate 40 to the tread 46 of a stairway. Rear portion 44 of the tread leg also has a carpet abutting edge 47 to abut a resilient carpet pad 48 over which lies a carpet 49 with its marginaledge portion 50 seated in the carpet holding recess 43 of the 'tread leg rear portion 44.
Riser leg 42 has a lower end portion 51 with a rearwardly directed inner surface 52 to fit against and conform to the curvature of a curved nose 53 on the stair.
The modification of the invention illustrated in Fig. 4 is characterized by the provision of an angle plate 60 having a tread leg or portion 61 and a riser leg or portion 62. The riser leg 62 has a lower end portion 70 with a carpet holding recess 71 adapted to receive the vertical carpet portion 72. The carpet portion 72 abuts the bottom edge 73 of the riser leg 62. This arrangement will place the vertical carpet portion 72 in alignment with the vertical front portion of the riser leg 62. The tread portion 61 has a carpet holding recess 63 in its rear portion 64 to hold the marginal edge portion 65 of a carpet 66. The rear portion 64 of the tread leg 61 has a carpet pad abutting edge 67 which abuts a resilient carpet pad 68 underlying the carpet 66.
A flexible fabric strip 69 is secured to and extends from beneath the rear portion 64 of the tread leg 61 of angle plate 60 to underlie the carpet pad 68.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1s:
1. A stairway covering comprising, in combination, with the tread and riser portions of the stairway, a resilient pad on the top surface of the tread portion of the stairway, a rigid spacer member interposed between the edge of the pad and the juncture between the tread and riser portions, a rigid spacer member on the outer surface of the riser portion adjacent its juncture with the tread portion, a strip of carpet overlying the pad, spacer members and outer surface of the riser portion, and a nosing construction on the outer end of the tread portion of the stairway, said construction including an angle plate having a horizontally disposed leg overlying the outer end of the tread portion of the stairway and a vertically disposed leg overlying the top end of the riser portion of the adjacent step, the rear end of the horizontally disposed leg being cutaway to provide a recess for receiving the front end of the strip of carpet, the free edge of the cutaway portion engaging the outer edge of the pad.
2. A stairway covering comprising in combination with a stairway including successively higher steps each having joined tread and riser portions, with the tread and riser portions of each step being joined to the riser and tread portions of the next higher and lower steps respectively, a resilient pad having inner and outer edges disposed on the top surface of the tread portion of one step of the stairway, a rigid spacer member interposed between the inner edge of the pad and the juncture between the tread portion of said one step and the riser portion of the adjacent higher step, a strip of carpet overlying the pad, spacer member and outer surface of said riser portion of said adjacent higher step, a nosing structure on the outer end of the tread portion, said structure including an angle plate having an apical portion lying flush with said outer end of the tread portion, said plate further having a horizontally disposed leg overlying and abutting the outer end of said tread portion, said horizontally disposed leg having an end with a cut-away portion providing a recess, said strip of carpet having a front end disposed in said recess and lying flush with the top of said end of the horizontally disposed leg, the cut-away portion having a free edge engaging the outer edge of said pad, said plate further having a vertically disposed leg extending below said tread portion and overlying the top end of the riser portion of said one step, and another piece of carpet overlying the riser portion of said one step and having an upper end engaged with said vertically disposed leg.
