To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DANIEL A. KEEOH, of Oannonsburg, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, and in which Figure 1 is aview showing a fire-escape embodying myinventionattached in position to the window of a building. Fig. 2 is aview of the basket or carriage detached. Fig. .3 is a perspective view of the socket-piece of the adjustable cross-bar, hereinafter described. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the end pieces of .the crossbar. Figs. 5 and 6 are views of one of the brackets in which the end pieces of the said cross-bar are received. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of the socket-piece shown in Fig. 3. The object of my invention is to provide a simple, strong, and cheap fire-escape capable of being fitted to any window of a hotel or. other building, and which, while admitting of being removed and conveniently stored when not in use, maybe quickly and readily applied for employment in case of an emergency.

My invention consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter de scribed, and pointed out in theclaims. V A A are brackets, of cast-iron or other suitable material, provided with holes a, thrdugh which screws or bolts are passed to secure the said brackets to the sides B B of a window. These brackets are permanently secured, near the top or at any convenient points, upon the sides of the window, and are provided with sockets O, which are adapted to receive the rectangular heads (1 of the end pieces D of the cross-bars. The bodies 6 of the end pieces D are rectangular in cross-section, and slide through guides E, formed at the ends.of the socket-piece F. Then the end pieces are pushed into the socket-piece F, the body portions 6 fit side by side between the walls ff thereof. "The heads d d are formed on opposite sides of the body portions of the end pieces D D, and come in contact with the inner ends of such body portions when the pieces D D arepushed clear in. Set-screws G G, passed through the guides E E, serve to 0 clamp the end pieces D D in place in the socket-piece F. A rib, 9, formed lengthwise of the socket-piece F, serves to strengthen the latter, and also to guide and separate the body portions 6 of the .end pieces D D, said body portions being cut away at h for the rib. K K, which are attached above to a ring, 10, by which the basket is suspended from the pulley o, and are connected below to a bottom. strap, L, and a transverse body-strap, M. The rear strap, I, is riveted or otherwise. secured v to the straps L M near the middle of each, and the end of the straps L and M are united to the side straps, K K, by rings q q, passing through loops in the ends ofthe straps, as shown. A strap, N, secured tothe ring (1 on each side of the basket, is provided with a spring-hook, 0', adapted to engage with rings 8 upon the strap M. Additional rings 8, with which said hooks r may also be engaged when desired, are also provided upon the outer side of one strap N and on the innerside of the other strap N.

A rope, O, is attached to the basket H, by means of which the basket, in its descent, may be uided and steadied from below.

V vhen it is not desired to use the fire-escape, 0 the ends D-D of the cross-bar may be removed from the brackets A A by first loosening the clamping-screws G G, and then sliding the endpieces D D inward within the socket end, piece F. The whole may then be made up 9 5 into a compact bundle and stored away in any convenient place. I

In case of need the fire-escape may bequickly put into place by simply sliding out the end pieces, D-D, entering them into the sockets O G of the brackets A, which, as before stated, are permanently attached to the sides of the Window, and securing them in position by the screws G. A person, on placing himself in the basket, may either sit facing the strap I and straddling such strap, or with his back toward the same, and may secure himself therein by crossing the straps N around his bodyand engaging the hooks r with the rings 8 on opposite sides of the basket. Then, by means of the rope k, which may be grasped by him or paid out by some person assisting him, his descent to the ground may be regulated.

The straps I K K are made sufficiently long to prevent a frightened occupant of the basket from reaching up and seizing the loop of rope in whichthe pulley o is suspended.

The cross-bar, being adjustable in length, may be applied to windows of any width in which suitable brackets are secured.

Having described my invention, I claim end pieces D, and means for securing said endpieces in position in said socket-piece, of the rope is and suspended basket, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the socket-piece F 0 and end pieces D, and means for-securing said end pieces in position in the socket-piece of the brackets A, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. The combination, with the socket-piece 5 F, having the guides E and rib g, of the screws G, end pieces D, and brackets fitted to receive said end pieces, and adapted to be attached to the sides of a window, substantially as described.

4. The combination, with the ring 1), straps I, K, and L, straps M, having rings 8, and rings q, of the straps N, provided with hooks, substantially as described.
