` MACHINE `FOR SETTINGAND `GUMMING` SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,192, dat-ea september 4, ieee.V
.Application filed December 4, 1882. (No model.)
` county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined SaW-Set and Saw-Glimmer, and we do hereby declare the following to be a full,
f clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the saine.
Our invention relates to improvements in a combined saw-set and saw-gumming machine; and 1t consists of parts and combinations of ard.
` parts more fully hereinafter described and I 5 claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a `view in perspeetive of our device. Fig. 2 is aside view of the same.- Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are views in detail ofthe same device. i
` a tenon, the shoulders on either side terminating in a knife-edge, as shown at a4. .l
B represents a lever with a forked end. rllhese forks extend on either side ofthe tenon a3, and rest and` are fulcrumed on theknifeedges, as at @tand are held from lifting by These forks extend also on either side of a narrow part or `tenon on the bar C, the `shoulders of which terminate in knifeedges, as at c and c, coming in contact with the top and bottom of the forks of the lever B. The ends of said forks are provided with the pin b', 'holding the bar C in position.` 'Ihe lower end of the bar C is provided with a `mortise that, when the parts are in position,
comes opposite the said mortise in the stand- The ends of this mortise terminate in the knife-edges c and o. In Fig. 2 Athe sides of the standard and the bar are broken away at this part to show the inside of themortise.
D represents a tool, one end of which, as at di in the side view, Fig. 3, is made in suitable l shape for gumming saws.` The other yend, as shown at d in the top view, Fig. 4, is made suitable for saw-setting. This tool is operated in the said adjacent mortises, and is held in position by the loose-fitting pins d and d.
'Ihe said tool is reversible endwise, and is fulj crumed on the knife-edge a2. l `the front end of the tool D, at E, is a vertical* Directly under hole for the insertion of dies, and has a smaller hole at the bottom for forcing out the dies with a punch. The faces of these dies are made of any desired shape suitable for gumming or setting saws.
The lever,F is fulcrumed on the set-screwf,
-attached to the standard, and is attached to the bar C by the thumb-screwf, operating in a slot in the lever F. On the opposite side of the standard from vthe lever F is attached the gage G (shown also in Fig. 5)v by a thumbscrew passing through the slot g, the sides of lthe notch g coming on either side of the front end of the tool D. H represents a spring for raising the handle end of the lever B. p1
The operation of oui` device is as follows: The tool D is first placed in position with the end desired for use in front on the die at E. The saw is then placed in position, as atI,with the teeth-edge under the point of the tool D, and the blade of the saw resting on the end of the thumb-screw a', by which the saw is adjusted at the required incline. Next the gage G is adjusted to admit of the teeth of the saw extending the desired distance under the tool D. By pressing down V011 the handle of the lever` B, and by means of the -fulcrum aforesaid, and by means also of the connections with thel bar C, as aforesaid, the front end of the tool D is ,pressed down on` the saw for gumming or setting, and at the same time the foot of the lever F is pressed upon the saw, holding it firm while the tool D is doing its work. When the said handle is raised, the front end of the llever F and of the tool D are also raised, leavtool D, and alsoon the attachments of the said IOC and a saw-clamp adapted to be operated simultaneously with the tool by means of said lever and connecting-bar, substantially as set forth.
2. 'In a combined saw-setting and saw-gum 5 ming machine, the combinatiomwith the standard A and lever B, of the tool D and the bar C,
. connectedwith said tool andlever byknife-edge pivots, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the standard A,
Io saw-support a, and lever B, of the tool D, :ir-
ranged through a slot in said standard, the bar C, pivotally connected with said lever and tool,
and the clamp F, pivoted on the standard and connected with said bar for operation thereby, substantially as described. 15
ln testimony whereof We sign this .specication, in the presence of two Witnesses, this 23d day of November, 1882.
. PHINEHAS D. DUNN. l CHARLES W. DUNN.
