J. T. MARETT.
STREET GAR BELL. No. 284,032. Patented Aug. 28; 18 83.
Witnesses: Inventor:
NITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. MARETT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HALSTEAD & SPENCER, OF SAME PLACE.
STREET-CAR BELL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,032, dated August 28, 1883.
Application filed May 28,1883. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. MARETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, inthe county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street-Oar Bells; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part .of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a top view, and Fig. 3 is a section, of the hammerhead.
My invention has for its object to provide a bell for street-cars in which the hammer-head and lever shall be made in a single piece, said head having a sliding? bolt which strikes the gong when the lever is duly moved, and which, after a stroke is made, falls back by gravity out of contact with said gong, so as not to interfcre with the vibration of the latter.
My improvements consist in the peculiar construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, having reference, principally, to the combination, with a hammerhead, of a sliding bolt, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A indicates a gong or bell supported upon a bracket, B, designed to be attached to a streetcar roof or ceiling and over the platform in the usual manner.
0 represents a lever pivoted in the bracket B at 0, and having at one end ahammer-head, D, its other end being adapted for attachment to a bell cord, chain, or strap in the usual manner. The head D is formed with a diametrical opening or socket, d, in which is loosely fitted a sliding bolt or plunger, E. Said bolt is formed with an annular groove, 0, to receive the end of apin, d, in the hammer-head, which pin prevents said bolt from entirely leaving said head, while permitting it to move longitudinally a sufficient distance to meet and strike the gong when the hammer makes its stroke. To prevent the admission of dirt to the opening (I in the hammer-head D, the bolt E is formed with a cap or flange, e, which is of larger diameter than said opening d. The lever G is formed with segmental shoulders c c, which rock against shoulders I) b on the ,clear, loud, and unmuffled tone.
I bracket B, and serve to limit and suddenly arrest the upward motion of .said lever.
The operation is substantially as follows: When the bell-cord is pulled or suddenly jerked, thelever (l swings on its pivot, the hammer-head D moving toward the gong A; but before said head can reach the gong the contact of shoulders o c with shoulders b b suddenly arrests the motion of the lever. The momentum which the bolt E has attained carries said bolt swiftly onward, causing its head to strike the gong, after which it falls back into its normal. position out of contact with the gong. By this means a sudden and swift stroke of the gong is effected and the instant withdrawal of the striking member accomplished, thus allowing the production of a Nor will the vibration of the gong be interfered with, even should the tension or draft on the bell cord or strap be maintained after the stroke is made, inasmuch as mere draft on the cord or strap cannot draw the head D against the gong, and. because the bolt E falls back instantly after striking the gong.
While my improvement is designed, mainly, for street-car bells or gongs, it may be applied to other forms of gongs or bells without departure from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as my invention is as follows:
1. The combination, with a bell or gong hammer-head, of a sliding bolt or plunger, E, substantially as shown and described.
2. A bell or gong hammer-head having a socket or opening and a sliding belt or plunger fitted therein, adapted and designed to be thrown outwardly from said head when the motion of the latter is arrested, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with gong or bell Aand bracket B, having shoulders I) b, of pivoted lever 0, having shoulders c 0, whereby the upward motion of said lever is limited, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of May, 1883.
JOHN T. MARETT.
