GRANSTEDT Unit d States Pa e Q APPARATUS FOR SHAPING CIGAR BUNCHES I OR THE LIKE 1 Karl Erik Granstedt, Stockholm, Sweden, assignor to Arenco Aktiebolag, Stockholm, Sweden, a Swedish joint-stock company This invention relates to apparatus for shaping cigar bunches or the like in which the bunches are expelled seriatim by a reciprocating ejector from the pockets and presented to a mechanism for transferring them for further treatment, for example in a cigar wrapping mechanism. In the operation of such an apparatus it might occur that said transferring mechanism will fail to catch a bunch presented to same by the ejector so that the bunch will again enter the pocket from which it was ejected and interfere with another bunch to be introduced into said pocket'whereby both the bunches will be crushed and the machine will have to be arrested. ,It is a main object of the invention toJremovesaid drawback.

Another arm 31 of the lever 61 carries a follower 32 engaging a groove 33 in a face cam 64 which is secured to the shaft 6.
. In the operation of this mechanism moved into an empty mould pocket 3 whereafter the arm 26 is swung in an anticlockwise direction so that the dog 23 will turn the drum 1 in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 1) through one step corresponding to the pitch of the mould pockets. Thereafter the dog 23 is moved out of the pocket 3 and the ejector pins 21 are introduced into the holes 22 in the bottom of that pocket 3 which occupies a position infront ofsaid pins which will expel a bunch from said pocket 3 and introduce it into a facing pocket 4 of the drum 2.
The third arm 34 of the three-armed lever 61 is pivotally connected with one end of a rod 35 the other end of which is pivotally connected to an arm 36 which is secured to a spindle 37 rotatably mounted in a hub 38 on a lever arm 39 which is freely rotatably mounted on theshaft 7. Referring to the drawings, two equally large drums 1 and 2 have each circumferentially an equal number of uniformly distributed mold pockets 3 and 4, respectively, for the cigar bunches to be shaped. The drums 1 and 2 11 rotatably mounted in brackets 60 on the frame 5. To

Pins are arranged to move vertically into and out of holes 49 in the bottoms of the mould pockets 4 to expel the bunches A from the mould pocket 4 temporarily occupying its top position and to support the bunch in a position (Fig. 1) from which it is transferred by a pincher 51 mounted on an arm system 65 devised to open,
close and displace said pincher in a manner well known the shaft 11 is secured a gear wheel 12 meshing with a conventional driving device (not shown).
In a bracket 13 on the frame 5 is slidably mounted a piston 14 which is moved periodically into an opposite pocket 3 in the drum 1 by a lever 15 extending substantially transversely through said piston. The lever 15 is at one end pivoted at 62 to the frame 5 and at its opposite end it is pivotally connected to one end of a rod 16 the other end of which is pivotally connected to a slide member 17 enclosing the shaft 6. The slide member 17 has a follower 18 engaging a groove 19 in a face cam 20 secured to the shaft 6. To the slide mem her 17 are secured ejector pins 21 movable into and out and a rod 45 is by a pivot pin 44 connected with said' arm. The rod 45 has a forked end embracing the shaft 7 and having a follower 46 engaging a groove 47 in a face cam 48 secured to said shaft 7 so that the arm 26 will be reciprocated when the shaft 7 rotates. The ejector pins 50 are secured to a vertically movable slide member 52 enclosing the shaft 7 and being, at its bottom end, pivoted to the top end of a rod 53 having its bottom end pivoted to a lever arm 54 turnably mounted at 63 in the frame 5. The slide member 52 carries'a follower 55 engaging a groove 56 in a face cam 57 which is secured to the revolving shaft 7 so that the slide member 52 and thereby also the ejector pins 50 will be moved periodically up and down and present the bunches to the pincher 51. But if the pincher fails to seize and carry away the bunch said bunch will reenter the pocket 4 when the ejector pins 50 are moved down and it will be carried by the drum 2 to a position opposite to the ejector pins 21 so that it will be crushed together with the bunch ejected from the drum 1 by said pins. This drawback will be obviated by the use of an expeller which comprises a yoke-shaped member 58 secured to the spindle 37 and having a pair of flat fingers 59 normally occupying a position to the left of the elevated ejector pins 50 (Fig. 1). At the opposite side of the ejector pins 51 is provided a stationary plate 66 secured to the frame 5. When the dog 40 moves to the right (Fig. 1) to assume its position for entering a pocket 4 the fingers 59 will also move substantially horizontally to the right over the elevated ejector pins 50 and push the bunch aside onto the plate 66 constituting a receiver for such bunches.
I claim:

An apparatus for shaping cigar bunches or the like comprising a carrier having an endless series of mould pockets adapted to receive the bunches and being movable to advance said pockets seriatim to a bunch delivery station, means for transferring the bunches seriatim from the dog 23 will be said delivery station, arr ejector, means for periodically elevating said ejector into i a top position to expelthebunches from said pockets and support them in a position from which they are transferred by said transferring means; ;and aui ili'ary meaifs operativel-y associated with said 'eje'dtor and said trarrsferririg;rrreansto remov'e repocliets adapted to reeeive the bunches and being movabletoadvance each-pocket to: a bunch delivery station,
