United States Patent PAPER FEED NIECHANISM FOR DRY TOILETS Vernon E. Gleasman, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, assignor to The White Motor Company, Cleveland, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application December 20, 1956, Serial No. 629,594 8 Claims. (Cl. 110-9) This invention relates broadly to mechanism for the combustion of fecal matter, and more specifically to improvements in the combination of a closet and incinerator designed for use in a home, factory, summer cottage, camp mobile unit and like environs.
The invention further pertains to certain structural and functional improvements in closets of the type disclosed in an application for Letters Patent of the United States filed on December 28, 1955, by George 0. Harm, Serial No. 555,892, entitled Dry Closets.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a pair of spaced intergeared rollers for flattening fecal matter enclosed in a folded strand of paper and feeding the paper into an incinerator.
Another object of the invention is to provide a second pair of driven rollers for conveying the paper strip into an incinerator, then closing the passageway thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide an electric switch actuated by the roller drive mechanism for the operative control of the burner in the incinerator.
Another object of the invention is to provide an incinerator of cylindrical form in order to minimize the cost of manufacture thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide metallic belts for supporting the paper strip during its translation from one set of rollers to the other.
Another object of the invention is to provide a powertake-olf from the incinerator blower motor to the paper feed rolls.
Another object of the invention is to provide an actuating device and timing mechanism for the operative control of the power take-off mechanisms.
Further objects and advantages of the invention reside in the provision of an assembly which is economical of manufacture, efficient of operation and dependable of structure.
Other objects and advantages more or less ancillary to the foregoing, and the manner in which all the various objects are realized, will appear in the following description, which considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, sets forth the preferred embodiment of the invention.

Referring first to Fig. l, the closet assembly comprises generally, a bowl 10 having a cover 11 thereon, a seat 12 hinged on the top thereof, an incinerator 13 connected to the bowl, and a stack or exhaust conduit 14 mounted on the incinerator to carry off heat generated therein. The bowl, which is preferably formed of a molded plastic material, includes a prismoidal housing 15 having a transversely disposed channel constituting a leg 16 on the forward end thereof, and a hollow subtended post 18 in the center of the rearward end of the housing. The forward end of the bowl is provided with a door 19 of arcuate vertical section retained in place by shouldered ledge 20 in the bottom of the door engaged with the upper edge 21 of the leg 16 and a rib 22 in the top of the door engaged with a shouldered ledge 23 in the lower face of a flanged portion of the cover 11. The sides of the door are formed with rearwardly directed flanges 24 provided with shouldered ledges 25 which envelop the forward edges of the side walls of the housing 15. The side walls 26 of the rearward portion of the housing are inset, and the upper ends thereof are formed with outboard right angle flanges defining shonlders27 coextensive with the major portion of the housing (Fig. 4). The front and rear ends of the shoulders 27 are provided with bosses 28 having dowel pins 29 molded therein for the retention of angle irons 30 designed to support a paper guide plate and the drive mechanism associated therewith. The base of the housing 15 is formed with a floor 31 and the forward ends of the walls that form the shoulders 27 are constructed with downwardly inclined walls 32 merged with the web of the channel or leg 16.
The paper guide 33 comprises a rectangular plate folded along the medial axis of the inner end thereof to form a trough 34 having parallel vertical side walls 35' and a contiguous divergent floor portion 36 of v' trans verse section. The outer end of the guide plate 33 embodies a flat planar web having a downwardly directed arcuate bead 37 in the edge thereof (Fig.3), and the folded portions of the inner end of the plate are refolded at right angles to provide transverse flanges 38 that are affixed to the horizontal webs of the angle irons 30. T he guide plate is inclined downwardly from the forward end of the housing to the rear thereof, the bottom of the trough 34 being disposed slightly above the housing floor 31. The lower .aces of the outer ends of the angle irons 3t carry cross frame brackets 39 having depending triangular end walls 40 thereon and inturned side flanges 41 for the support of a paper roll cross member bracket 42. The bracket embodies a top plate 43 welded to the flange 41 and depending side walls 44, each formed with'a bayonet slot 45 therein for the reception of an arbor 46 for a roll of paper P. The lower ends of the sides 44 of the paper roll supporting bracket are semi-circular, and upper portions thereof are tangential thereto and parallel. The
arcuate door 19 is of si'mliar configuration and disposed in spaced relation therewith.
The inner end of the guide plate 33. is provided with shoes 233 (Figs. 2 and '11) to restrain upward'creepage of the paper during its. flight over the guide plate. The shoes comprise narrow strips of sheet metal. bent in loops 234 of arcuate form. One end of each loop is at.- tached to the flange 38 and the other free end thereof overhanging the corner of the flange. The paper rides within the loop, and when the edge thereof engages the closed upper end of the shoe, the body of the strand below the free end of the. loop will bulge (as shown in dotted lines of Fig. 11), and thus impose. a. compressive effort on the strand which will effectuate planar adjus ment thereof before it enters the trough 34.
The outer end of the plate 33 is provided with shoes or fingers 235 to align and guide the paper thereover.
The fingers comprise sheet metal plates bent and twisted to accommodate the entry of the paper, arrest lateral movement thereof, and deflect the strand downward into engagement with the face of the plate.
The rearward end of the housing contains the paper feed roller assembly and the closure mechanisms. for the passageway to any incinerator. The paper feed mechanism comprises a pair of cylindrical rollers 47 and 48. rotatable on spindles 49- and 51) supported respectively in arms 51 and 52 superjacent the upper ends of the rollers and ina base plate 53 below the lower ends. thereof. The arm 52 is aflixed to a transverse channel 4 welded or otherwise secured to the angle irons 30. The pillow blocks and the channel 54 are drilled and reamed to receive the. dowel pins 29. The arm 52. is below the lower face of the channel 54, and the inner edge of the outer end thereof is folded upwardly to provide a vertical car 55 drilled for the reception of a drive shaft 56. The opposed edge of the arm embodies a depending strap 57 having a lateral flange 58 in the lower end thereof which overlies and is aflixed to a roll supporting a bar 59. The inner end of the arm 52 is. bent upwardly and inwardly towards the channel 54 to form a journal bearing 60 for a spindle 61 constituting one of the closure rolls for the passageway into the incinerator, The arm. 52 is retained in place by an angle clip 62 welded to the channel 54 and bolted to the arm 52. The
arm 51 is mounted for pivotal movement below the lower face of the channel 54, and upper end of the spindle 4? is journaled therein. The arm 51 is supported by. a bracket 63 which overlies the channel 54 and is secured thereto by a bolt 64. The central portion of the bracket is formed with an'arcuate slot 65 therein to receive. a. shouldered machine screw 66 which is threaded in the arm 51 and constitutes the fulcrum therefor. The outer end of the bracket 63 is mounted in a channel having a pair of spaced vertical ears 67 therein which are drilled in axial alignment with the hole in the car 55 to receive the drive shaft 56. The inner end of the arm 51 is bent upwardly and inwardly towards the channel 54 to form a journal bearing 68 for the spindle 69 of the second roll for closing the incinerator passageway. A second roll supporting bar 70 is fulcrumed on the spindle 49 subjacent the plate 53. The inner ends of both of the bars 59 and 70 are folded upwardly and inwardly to form journal bearings 71 for the spindles 61 and 69. The lower ends of the roller 47 and 48 are provided respectively with intermeshed spur gears 72 and 73, the gear 72 being driven by a bevel gear 74 molded in the top of the roller 48 which is entrained with a bevel pinion 75 on the drive shaft 56. The outer end of the drive shaft 56 has a hand crank 76 keyed thereon to facilitate rotation thereof and the consequent translation of the folded strip of paper between the rollers 47 and 48.
The rollers 47 and 48 are preferably formed from molded plastic cup sections having mating annular flanges inthe ends thereon which are assembled in. telescopic engagement with each other and cemented in place. The circumferential faces of both rollers are formed with spaced horizontally aligned grooves for the reception of ladder chains 78 which are also seated in similar grooves in the passageway closure rolls 80 and 81.
The shaft 56 has a wheel 82 mounted for free rotation thereon which is disposed in a vertical plane common to the center of the trough 34 in the guide plate 33. The circumferential edge of the wheel is provided with a rubber tire 83 impinged between the rollersand the upper edge of the folded paper strip 84 as it passes between rollers. The lower face of the base plate 53 has a semicircular trough 85 affixed thereon in coaxial alignment with the trough 34 and the top of the. trough or paper support 85 is spaced fromthe lower faces of the rolls and 81 with the free end thereof terminating within the combustion chamber in the incinerator. The pivotal arm 51 and the bar 70 are urged towards the; fixed. arm 52 and bar 59' by a contractile: spring 86; Thus,. after. the folded U strip of paper 84 and fecal matter are crushed and flattened by the-rollers 47- and 48 and led by the chains 78 through the opening between the; closure rolls, these rolls (80 and 81) will be drawn together and close the opening or passageway 87 to the. incinerator.
The. incinerator comprises anouter semi-cylindrical metallic shell 88 and a spaced concentric. inner cylinder 39 therein which is formedof heat resisting material such as fire clay. The cylinder defines the firing chamber 90 and has the passageway 87 therein, and a second opening 91 for a cleanout door 92. The outer walls of the cylinder adjacent passageway 37 are recessed to receive the:

The top of the incinerator is provided with a blower 161 which. is. driven by a motor 102 controlled by: an electric switch103'. The blower is-coupled with the fuel nozzle which in turn is coupled with a fuel line,. Mr ignition device, a solenoid valve, and a timing device for; the delayed action of the valve and. blower motor.
The operation of the switch 103 closes the electric connections to the blower motor, effectuates the. operation of the ignition device and thus effects the consequent combustion of the, fuel ejected through the. nozzle. The switch 103 is operated by the rotative movement. of the drive shaft 56, the mechanism therefor comprising. a disc 104 affixed to the. shaft 56 adjacent the. threaded end 105 thereof, a lateral crank pin 186. in. the disc 1 34, and a secondv disc 107 having an arcuate opening 1%: therein for the reception of the pin 106. The hub of the disc 107 is. tapped. to. receive the. threaded end 165 of the shaft 56. and the. hand crank 76' is affixed to the outer faces of the. disc 107'. Upon the initial. rotation of the hand crank 76, the disc. 107 is screwed inwardly upon the shaft56, thus drawing the face of the. disc into engagement with one of the arms of a bell crank 110- having. the second. arm thereof disposed. in the plane of the switch 193. The arcuate opening 163. in the disc 107 provides an escapement movement for the pin and a delayed action of rotation of the paper feed rollers. A spiral spring 111 anchored to the disc 107', at one end.
The:
L and to disc 104 at the other, effects the automatic return of the hand crank 76*. The drive shaft 56 is provided with a ball clutch 112 to restrain improper rotative movement of the crank in the event the operator turns the crank in the wrong direction.
The leading edge of the paper in the roll 47 is gummed, thus when it is necessary to replace the roll, the end of the new roll of paper is drawn over the head 37 and attached to the trailing end of the spent roll and the hand crank is operated until the cemented edge of the paper is drawn between the rollers. As the rollers 47 and 48 are rotated, the paper is drawn over the fiat upper face of the guide plate, then following the folded V portion thereof is gradually looped and ultimately passes into the trough 34.
The cover 11 is formed with a depending flange 113 following the contour of the seat 12, but slightly larger. The lower edge of the flange 113 is in proximity with the rearward arcuate edge of the bead 37 and in wiping engaged relation with the paper strand 84, thus forcing the paper downwardly at the point of contact and forming a fluid seal in the forward end of the bowl. The bottom of the flange terminates in proximity with the horizontal flange of the angle irons 36 and the rearward portion 114 of the flange is disposed forward the rollers 47 and 48. Thus, the cover 11 and seat 12 may be readily lifted from the bowl and housing to facilitate cleaning the interior of the bowl and housing.
The inner ends of the angle irons 30 protrudes beyond the housing 15 and are provided with shouldered pins 115 received in slots 116 in arms 117 secured to the outer wall of the incinerator. Thus, when it is necessary to adjust or repair the rollers and associated parts in the closet, the entire housing may be elevated and retracted from the incinerator and readily replaced in a converse manner.
The alternate drive and control mechanism for the rollers, illustrated in Figs. 6, 7, 8, 9 and comprise a power drive coupling for the roll spindle 61, a speed reduction unit therefor, and a power take-off coupling for the operation thereof. As will be seen in Fig. 7, the upper end of the spindle 61 is provided with a cross pin 125 engaged in an axial slot 126 in a sleeve 127 secured to a shaft 123 coaxially aligned with the roller spindle 61. The shaft 128 is formed with an enlarged lead screw 129 subjacent a housing 136 for a speed reduction gear train of conventional form. The gears in the housing are driven by a sheave 131 connected by a belt 132 to a pulley 133 keyed to the armature shaft 134 of the motor 102. The end of the shaft 128 protrudes beyond the housing and has a jaw clutch 134 afiixed thereon engageable with a similar clutch member 135 on a contiguous gear 136' in the speed reduction gear train. The clutch member 135 and gear 136 are bored for free sliding movement of the journal 137 on the shaft 128. The lead screw is encased in a cage 138 attached to the lower face of the housing 130 which is fabricated with clearance holes for a pull rod 139 and an arm 14% on a coupling 141. The arm 140 has a threaded half nut 141 on the innerend thereof held in engaged relation with the lead screw 129 by a helical spring anchored to the clutch arm 140 and the cage 138. The out-er end of the arm is pivotally connected to the top of a link 142, and the lower end of the link is fulcrumed on the Wall of theincinerator. The link is engaged by a triangular cam plate 143 aflixed to a rod 144 mounted for axial rotation on the outer casing 83 of the incinerator and a lever or handle 145 is pinned to the free end of the rod to facilitate the rotative movement of the cam.
i The rearward face of the coupling or half nut 141 is drillcdand tapped to receive the pull rod 139 which has a washer 146 on the end thereof supported by a jamb nut 147. The Washer is arranged to abut a leaf spring 148 engageable with a push button 149 in an electric starting switch 155? connected to the motor 102 through lead lines 151. The lower face of the half nut 141 is drilled to retain a helical spring 152 seated on the base of the cage 138 and provided to elevate the clutch memher 134 in tooth clearance position above the clutch subsequent the separation thereof.
In operation, when the lever or handle is rotated, the cam 143 rocks the link 142, retracts the half nut 141, and the pull rod 139, thus actuating the starting switch for the motor and driving the gears in the speed reduction gear train. As the half nut 141 is retracted from the lead screw, the shaft 128 will fall by gravity and effect the engagement of the clutch members 134 and 135 and the consequent rotation of the roll spindle 61, the rolls 80 and 81, and the rollers 47 and 48. After the lever 145 is actuated and the shaft 128 has descended, the half nut 141 will re-engage the upper end of the lead screw 129 and effect the elevation of the shaft until the clutch members are disengaged. The length, R. P. M., and lead of the screw 129 are of a ratio which will efiectuate the translation of a strand of paper of a'requisite length during the operative cycle of the rollers and lead screw. The starting switch 150 is connected to a timing device, of conventional form, in a junction box 153 in the incinerator. Hence, after the lever 145 is actuated, the timing device will hold the circuit to the blower motor in a closed position and thus effect the continued rotation of the rolls and rollers for the requisite period of time.
The timing device is also coupled with a solenoid feed valve which is actuated for approximately one and onehalf minutes before the circuit to the blower is broken. In this manner, fresh air is driven through the incinerator and the fumes areexpelled therefrom after the flame in the incinerator is extinguished.
Although the foregoing description is necessarily of a detailed character, in order that the invention may be completely set forth, it is to be understood that the specific terminology is not intended to be restrictive or confining, and that various rearrangements of parts and modifications of detail may be resorted to without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention as herein claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. Apparatus for the disposal of fecal matter comprising a closet housing, a seat thereon having an opening therein, a roll of paper in said housing, a guide plate in said housing adjacent said roll of paper for the support of a strand thereof, upturned parallel side walls in said plate constituting a trough under and facing said opening for the reception of fecal matter and for folding the paper along the medial axis thereof, a pair of spaced vertical rollers contiguous the end of said trough engaged with said folded paper, selectively actuatable means for rotating said rollers and pulling the folded paper and fecal matter through said trough and flattening it between said rollers, a fixed arm supported on the axis of one of said rollers, a pivoted arm supported on the axis of the other of said rollers, a second pair of rotatable vertical rollers mounted respectively on said arms, chains on the first named rollers for driving the second named rollers, an incinerator having a passageway therein and coaxially aligned with said trough for guiding said folded paper and fecal matter into said incinerator, means for swinging said pivoted arm towards said fixed arm, whereby the second named rollers close said passageway into said incinerator when the folded paper and the fecal matter envelope therein has passed between said second named rollers.
2. Apparatus for the disposal of fecal matter comprising a closet, a seat thereon having an opening therein, a roll of paper in the forward end of said closet, a guide plate in said closet adjacent said roll of paper for the support of a strand thereof, upturned parallel side walls in the rearward end of said plate constituting a trough under and facing said opening for shaping the strand of paper into a U section for the reception of fecal matter, a pair of spaced vertical rollers contiguous the end of said trough engagedwith thepaper U section, arotatable shaft superjacent said rollers, gearing; thereon engaged with said rollers, selectively actuatable means for rotating said shaft and pulling the U section'of paper and fecal matter thereon through said trough and flattening it betweensaidrollers; a second pair of vertical rotatable rollers adjacent the first named rollers, the-vertical axis ofone of the last named rollers being mounted for swingingmovement towards the other, means on the first named U-section'and-the fecalmatter-therein is ejected from said second named rollers.
3-. Apparatus for thedisposal of fecal matter comprising a closet having-an opening in the top thereof, a roll ofpaper in said closet, a guide plate in said closet adjacent said roll of paper for the support of a strand: thereof, upturned side walls in said plate defining a trough under and-facing said opening to fold a strand of said paper along the medial axis thereof and receivev fecal matter, a pair of spaced vertical rollers contiguous the end of said trough engaged with, thefolded strand of paper, selectivelyactuatablemeans for rotating said rollers to pull the folded strand of paper and fecal matter through said trough and flatten it between saidrollers, a second pair of vertical rollers adjacent the first named rollers, means on the first named rollers for rotating the second; named rollers, an incinerator having a passageway therein coaxially aligned with said trough for guiding the folded strand of paper and fecal matter into said" incinerator, means for moving said-second named rollers towards each other; to close the incinerator passageway when the folded strand of paper and the fecal matter has passed between said second named rollers; V
4. Apparatus for the disposal, of'fecal' matter com" prising a closet having an opening in the top thereof, a roll of paper in the forward end of said closet, a plate in said closet adjacent said roll of paper for the support of a strand thereof, means engagedwith said strip for guiding it over said plate, upturned side walls in the rearward end of said plate defining a trough under. and facing said opening to fold a, strand of said paper along the medial axis thereof for the reception of fecal matter, a pair spacedvertica-l rollers contiguous the end of said trough engaged with the folded strand of paper, selectively actuatable means for rotating said rollers to pull the folded strand of paper and fecal matter through said trough and flatten itand the fecal matter thereon between said rollers, a second pair of vertical rollers adjacent the first named rollers, means on the first named rollers for rotating the second named rollers, a pivoted arm supporting the axis-of one ofthesecond named rollers, an incinerator having an opening therein coaxially aligned with said trough for the reception of the folded strand of paper and fecal matter, means for-swinging said arm about its pivot to move the second namedroller-towards theother second named roller and close said incinerator passageway after the folded strand of paperand fecal matter has passed between said second named roilers, a blower on said incinerator, a motor therefor, and an electric switch on said closet actuated by said means for rotating the first named rollers for controlling the operation of said motor.
5. Apparatus for the disposal of fecal matter comprising a closet having; an opening in the top thereof, a roll of paper in the forward end of said closet, a guide plate insaid closet adjacent said roll of paper for the support of an endthereof, upwardly bent side walls in the rearward end of said plate defining a trough under and facingsaid opening for folding the end of said roll of paper along the medial axis thereof to receive fecal matter, a pair of spaced vertical rollers contiguous the end ofsaidtrough engaged with the folded paper, a motor for rotating said rollers to pullthe folded paper and fecal matter thereon through said trough and to flatten the paper and fecal matter between said rollers, a lever for the control thereof, a second pair of rotatable vertical rollersadjacent thefirst named rollers, chains on the first named rollers for rotating the second named rollers, pivotal arms for the support of one of said second named rollers; an incinerator having a passageway therein coaxially aligned with said trough to receive and admit the folded paper and fecal matter into said incinerator, means for swinging said pivotal arms towards the axis of the other second named roller to close the incinerator passageway when the folded paper and the fecal matter has been ejected by said second named rollers, a hand lever shaft, a clutch connected therewith, driving connections between said motor and said rollers, a reciprocating rod connected to said hand lever shaft and said clutch, and an electric switch for said motor engageable with said rod.

Apparatus for the disposal of fecal matter comprising a closet having an opening in the top thereof, a roll of paper in the forward end of said closet, a guide plate in said closet adjacent said roll of paper for the support of a strand thereof, upturned side walls in the rearward end of said plate defining a trough under and facing said opening to fold a strand of said paper along the medial axis thereof and receive fecal matter, a pair of spaced vertical rollers contiguous the end of said trough engaged with the folded strand of paper, means selectively actuatable for rotating said rollers to pull the folded strand of paper and fecal matter through said trough and to flatten it between said rollers, a second pair of vertical rollers adjacent the first named rollers, driving means on the first named rollers for rotating the second named rollers, an incinerator having a passageway therein coaxially aligned with said trough for the entry of the folded strand of paper and fecal matter into said incinerator, means for movingone of the said second named rollers towards the other second named roller to close the incinerator passageway after the folded strand of paper and the fecal matter has passed between said second named rollers, a blower in said incinerator, a motor therefor, a switch for the control thereof, a reciprocatory 'rod engageable with said switch, and a timing device connected with said last named switch to effectuate the delayed operation of said motor.

Apparatus for the disposal of fecal matter comprising a closet having an opening in the top thereof, a roll of paper in said closet, a guide plate in said closet adjacent said roll of paper for the support of a strand thereof, upturned side walls in said plate defining a trough under and facing said opening to fold a strand of said paper along the medial axis thereof and receive fecal matter, a pair of spaced vertical rollers contiguous the end of said trough engaged with the folded strand of paper, selectively actuatable means for rotating said rollers to pull the folded strand of paper and fecal matter through said trough and to flatten it between said rollers, a shaft above said rollers, gearing thereon for rotating said rollers, 21 second pair of rollers adjacent the first named rollers, endless chains onthe first named rollers engaged with the second named rollers for rotating the second named rollers, a disc having an arcuate slot therein threaded on said shaft, a second disc on said shaft, a pintle thereon engaged in the slot in the first named disc, an arm engaged with said first named disc, a switch engaged with said arm, an incinerator having a passageway therein coaxially aligned with said trough for guiding the folded strand of paper and fecal matter into said incinerator, means for moving one of said second named rollers towards the other second named roller to close the incinerator passageway after the folded strand of paper and the fecal matter has moved beyond said second named rollers, a blower for said incinerator, a
motor for the operation thereof, and electric connections between said motor and said switch for the control thereof.

Apparatus for the disposal of fecal matter comprising a closet housing, a seat thereon having an opening therein, a roll of paper in said housing, a guide plate in said housing adjacent said roll of paper for the support of a strand thereof, upturned parallel side walls in said plate constituting a trough under and facing said opening for the reception of fecal matter and for folding the paper along the medial axis thereof, a pair of spaced vertical rollers contiguous the end of said trough engaged with said folded paper, selectively actuatable means for rotating said rollers and pulling the folded paper and fecal matter through said trough and flattening it between said rollers, said actuating means including a rotatable shaft inter-geared with said rollers, an electric switch actuated by said shaft, a fixed arm supported on the axis of one of said rollers, a pivoted arm supported on the axis of the other of said rollers, a second pair of rotatable rollers mounted respectively on said arms,
chains on the first named rollers for driving the second named rollers, an incinerator having a passageway therein coaxially aligned with said trough for guiding said folded paper and fecal matter into said incinerator, means for swinging said pivoted arm towards said fixed arm, whereby the second named rollers close said passageway into said incinerator when the folded paper and the fecal matter has passed between said second named rollers, a blower on said incinerator, a motor therefor, electric connections between said motor and said switch, and an escapement movement mechanism connected with said motor for the delayed operation thereof.
