Be it known that I, CHARLES BIRD Tuoi;- EIELD, of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and Territory of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Candlestick and Toaster, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved Candlestick in -which the candle will beheld straight and in such a inanner that all the grease, stearine, wax, dre., will be consumed, and will not run down the candle anddrop on the floor, clothes, Src., and which candlestick is also to be provided with a device for holding bread, meats, Src., to be toasted, and with a pan 'for catching the drippings.

Reference is to be had to the accompanyingY drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar let-ters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

A standard, A, either square or round, is secured ou a base, B, which is provided in its top with a recess, (l, for receiving matches. The bottom of the base is Ina-de of wire-netting or sonic other roughened material for rubbing the matches thereon for the purpose of'igniting them. Two nuts, D, are loosely mounted on the standard A, and are provided with tubular projections E, containing springs F, the outer ends ot' which rest against screwplugs G in 'the outer ends of the tubular projections, the inner ends of the springs cont-aining plugs resting against the standard A in a longitudinal groove, e, in the saidstandard. To the nuts D plates J J having upwardlyprojecting rims or flanges, are attached. The upper plate, J, is provided with a central aperture, through which a candle, R, can pass, and

'the lower plate, J is provided with a springsocket, M, for receiving the lower end of the candle R. The socket M is provided -at its bottoni with a series of apertures, c, through which the molten grease, wax', or stearine on the bottoni plate, J', can iiow into the sockel'. `so,that all the grease, Sac., cau be consumed by the last part of the wick. lf desired, screws can be used to hold the nuts D in place on the standard. The stand ard Ais provi ded at its up per end with a ring, l), for carrying or hanging 'the Candlestick. By means ofthe screw-plugs G the tension of the springs F can be adjusted to press against the standard with more or less force. An inverted lamp-chimney, Q, provided with a tucked upper edge, isv placed on the plate J `in such a Inanner that the tucked edge rests on theplate J and the upper plate, J, willrest on the base of the chimney, as shown in Fig. l, which chimney surrounds the candle. In place of the inverted lamp-chimney, a cylinder of Wire-netting can be used. Into the head of the screw G of the uppernut, D, a spindle, G, is screwed, on the outer end of which a disk, S, provided with a series ol' arms', is held by a screw, S', a spiral spring, Si', surrounding the spindle Gv between the disk S and an annular shoulder, y, on the spindle. Prongs or spikes T are fastened on the ends of the' arms ofthe disk S. A bar, ll, is screwed lin the head of the screw G of the lower nut, D, which bar is adapted to be passed into a transverse socket, l1', on the bottom of a pan, V, whereby the said pan can be` supported by the bar U. The pan V is 'provided with legs V. rA strainer, lV, provided with lian ges, can be placed in the pan V. y

The combined candlcstick and toaster is used as follows: The candle is placed into the socket M, .the upper 'end of the candle proj ecting through the aperture in the plate-J, whereby the candle will always be held straight and vertically; or the upper end of the candle may be below the plate J. Any wax, steal-ine, grease, or other material from 'which the can- Adle is Inade collects on the plates J J and .is prevented from il'owing downthe candle or dropping ou the floor. The grease, Src., on .the plate J is consumed as the candle burns down, and the grease, Src., onthe plate J is consumed by the last parts or remnant-s of the wick. The plate J can be lowered or raised as the candle is consumed, so that the upper end of the candle can always be held by the said plate. If the candle is to be used for cook- IOO ing or warming food, water, &c., the dish is placed on the plate J, which is elevated above the ame.

If desired, the chimney Q, or a cylinder made of Wire-netting or other perforated material, can be interposed between the plates J J so that the candle-holder can be used as a lantern, the said chimney or cylinder protecting the candle from being extinguished "by draft or a gust of wind.'

If the apparatus is to be used for toasting, the candle is removed, the meat, bread, Snc., to be toasted is fastened on the prongs or spikes T, and is presented to the iire. The disk or plate S can be'turned on the spindle, so that the several parts of the article held on the prongs will be successively presented to.

The candle is not only held straight; but if the device is inclined and the top plate, J, is below the candle, it will catch all grease. 4 f

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A candlesticlr made substantially as here- 3o in shown and described, and consisting of a standard provided with plates for holding the upper and lower ends ofthe candle, as set forth.

2. In a candlestick, the combination, withthe standard A, of the nuts D D, the plates J 3 5 J and the chimney Q, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set rest on the bottom plate, J, substantially as 5o herein shown and described, and for the purpose set i'orth. f
