Z22- 38) bination with a sample removing device, a counter which is operated by a movable portion of the device so that an accurate record may be maintained showing the number of samples removed from the container. The device herein disclosed in particularly adaptable for use in removing alcohol from a container and is designated in a manner to meet the rigid requirements of the authorities for a leakless and tamper-proof sampling device with a register o'r counter for indicating the number of samples which have been removed from the container.
With the foregoing and 4other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrange ment of parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 15 indicates a tapered or frusto-conical housing which is formed between the ends thereof with an annular flange 16y adapted to be secured to a bushing 17 formed in a wall of a liquid holding container T. The flange 16 being disposed between the ends of the housing 15 provides an inner portion 18 which is adapted to project into the 3'* tent 2,834,515 Patented May 13, 1958 interior of the container T. The larger end of the housing 15 is outermost and the large outer end of housing is rotatably disposed in the housing 15 and is formed at its reduced inner end with a collar 21. A cup-shaped member 22 is threaded as at 23 into the collar 21. This cup-shaped member or dome provides a meansifor adjusting the contained volume of the rotatable assembly by varying the interior of member 22. The plug 20 iS formed with an outer end wall 24 which has a handle or lever 25 secured thereto, as by a screw 26. The wall 24 is formed with an outwardly projecting lug 27 having a bore 28 therethrough and within which the lever or handle 25 engages. The plug or receptacle 201 is rotatably sealed within the housing 15 by means of a clamping ring 29 secured by screws 30 to the ange 19, and a resilient gasket 31 is interposed between the ring 29 and flange 19. The resiliency of gasket y31 provides means for attaining leakless pressure along the tapered contact between plug 20 and housing 15 by adjustment of screws 30. The inner end 18 of housing 15 is provided with upper and lower ports 32 and 33, respectively and the inner portion of valve plug 2l) is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed liquid intake ports 34 and 35. The ports 34 and 35 are adapted to be normally dispensed in registry with ports 32 and 33 so that the liquid in the tank T can freely enter the interior of valve plug 20 and circulate therethrough. In this manner the liquid in the valve plug will not be entrapped and will thereby be a true sample of the liquid which is in the containery T. The valve housing 15 is provided with a discharge port 36 in the lower side thereof, and a discharge nipple or pipe 37 is threaded into the port 36. The valve plug 2li adjacent the large end thereof is formed with a discharge port 38 which is adapted in one position to register with port 36 so that the liquid in plug 2d will drain therefrom. In order to assist in the draining of the liquid from plug 20, 'the housing 15 is provided with an air vent 39 and the plug 20 is provided with a vent 40. At the time the discharge port 38 is in registry with port 36, vent 40 is in registry with vent 39. At this time the valve plug 20 will be disposed in the position shown in Fig. 5. At this time also the valve plug 20 will be disposed in the 8, wherein the ports 34 and 35 are out of registry with ports 32 and 33. In other Words, when discharge port 38 is in registry with port 36, whereby the liquid in the hollow valve plug may drain therefrom through the nipple or discharge pipe 37, the liquid in the container T is cut off from the valve plug and the quantity of liquid in plug 20 which is of measured quantity, will be withdrawn therefrom.
In order to provide a means whereby an accurate account as to the number of times the valve plug 20 has been drained by rocking of handle 25 to a draining or sampling position, l have provided a counter 41 which is secured to flange 19. The counter 41 includes a rock shaft 42 and rock shaft 42 has fixed thereto a lever 43. The lever 43 projects downwardly and radially of the rock shaft 42 and has Xed thereto by fastening means 44, a sector shaped gear 45. The gear 45 meshes with fragmentary gear teeth 46 carried by a ring 47 which is fixed as by fastening means 48 to the end wall 24. The lever 25 in the mid-travel position thereof, wherein no liquid is directed to enter or be discharged from the valve plug 20, is disposed in the vertical full-line position shown in Fig. l.
When it is desired to remove a sample of the liquid from `container T lever 25 is rocked to the left, as viewed in Fig. l, to the limit permitted by stop lug 49 which is positionshown in Fig.
carried byv the clamping ring 29. At this time the intake ports 34 and 35 will be in registry with the ports 32 and 33. Port 36 will be in the cut-off position shown in Fig. 4 and vent 40will be out of registry with vent 39.
After thevalve plug or receptacle 20 is filled, handle 25' is then rocked to the right, as viewed in Fig. l, through an arc of substantially 90 to the limit permitted by a second stop member 50, also carried by ring 29. At this time the discharge port 3S will be in registry with port 36'and at the same time ports 34 and 35 will be out of registryv with ports 32 and 33. Also at the same time vent 40 will be in registry with vent 39. With port 38 registering with port 36 the entire liquid in receptacle orvalve plug` 20, will drain out through outlet pipe 37. With a samplingdevice as hereinbefore described a predetermined quantity'l of liquid which is isolated within the rotatable assembly, can be withdrawn from a container and as the sampling device is operated to withdraw the liquid from the container a counting mechanism is engaged so that an accurate record of the number of samples removed can be maintained.
The plug 20 is provided with a filler 51 which is adapted to be uppermost, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6 when plug 20 is in the lling position. This filler 51 provides a means whereby to eliminate space which would provide an unpurged air space when the plug was rotated to the filling position. The inner surface of ller inclines upwardly and inwardly lfrom wall 24 to port 34. At the time plug 20 is in the illing end circulating position, ller 51 is uppermost and any air in plug 20 will move rearwardly and escape through ports 34 and 32 which at this time will be in registry, as shown in Fig. 9.
The plug operator 2S with counter 41 and the mechanism associated therewith are enclosed by a housing or cover 52. The cover 52 is secured to housing 15 by means of screws S3 which extend through a flange 54 formed on each side of housing 15. Each screw 53 is formed with a hole 55 through which a sealing wire is adapted to extend so that the cover will be sealed to housing 15. Cover 52 is formed with an arcuate slot 56 in which handle or operator 25 operates, and cover 52 is formed with aligned openings 57 adjacent one end of slot 56 through which a padlock is adapted to engage so as to lock handle 25 in one end of slot 56 in the plug draining position. Cover 52 is provided with a transparent window 58 overlying counter 41 so that the reading; of counter 41 can be taken without removing cover 52.
What is claimed is:
A liquid sampling device comprising a truste-conical housing, a flange carried by said housingbetweenV the ends thereof and engageable with a container wall for attaching said housing to the container with the small end of said housing projecting into said container, said housing having a pair of intake ports adjacent the small end thereof', a frusto-conical hollow measuring plug rotatable in said housing, a hollow projection carried by the small end of said plug for adjusting the interior volume of said plug, said plug having a pair of intake ports adapted in one position of said plug to register with said rst named intake ports whereby liquid in said container will flow into said plug, said housing having a discharge port adjacent the large outer end thereof and. said plug having an outlet port adapted in a second position of said plug to register with said discharge port, said housing and plug having vent ports adapted to register with each other when said outlet and discharge ports are in registry, means for rotating said plug, a counter mechanism lcarried by said housing, a driven gear member carried by said counter mechanism, a driving gear xed relative to said plug meshing with said driven gear for operating said counter mechanism with rotation of said-plug, a ller extending along one side of the inner of said plug, said filler being adapted to be uppermost when theplug is in filling position to eliminate the formation of an air pocket when thc plug is in filling position, a coverl for said housing, apertured screws securing said cover to said housing, a sealing wire extending through the apertures in said screws and connecting said cover and housing, said cover having a slot therein through which said handle means extends, and said housing having apertures therein on opposite sides of said slot adapted to receive the hasp of a padlock to prevent unauthorized actuation of the device.
