The purpose of this invention is to provide means for cleaning thread remaining on a bobbin after the main part is used, from the bobbin.
in conventional knitting machines small quantities of thread remain on the bobbins after the main part of the thread is used and it is diflicult to remove these small quantities of thread. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a bobbin gripping and removing device, operated by hydraulic means wherein gripping jaws move over the end of a bobbin and grip, withdraw, and drop the bobbin.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide a bobbin cleaning device that is adapted to be operated in both directions with a single hydraulic cylinder.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bobbin cleaning device in which a plurality of units are adapted to be used in one machine with the units including set of jaws and a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a bobbin removing device that is adapted to be installed on machines now in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bobbin cleaning device which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a hydraulic cylinder having a piston therein with a rod extended from the piston through one end of the cylinder, a head having pivotally mounted jaws with rollers at the ends of arms extended from the jaws carried by the end of the piston rod, cams positioned to be engaged by the rollers of the jaws for opening the jaws to receive the head of a bobbin, bobbin stripping elements actuated by the jaws, and another set of cams also positioned to be engaged by the rollers of the jaws for opening the jaws to release the bobbin.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the bobbin removing assembly of the thread cleaning device showing the jaws traveling toward the end of a bobbin.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. l showing rubbing blocks in engagement with the body of the bobbin for removing threads therefrom as the bobbin is withdrawn.
Figure 3 is an elevational view, with parts shown in section showing the bobbin gripping jaws moved from the position shown in Fig. 1 to open positions wherein the rollers are traveling over the cams.
Figure 4 is an elevational View similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 3 showing the jaws in gripping relation with the head of the bobbin and with the .rollers leaving the cams.
Figure 5 is an elevational view also similar to that shown in Fig. 1 showing the rollers in engagement with the second set of cams whereby the jaws of the device are opened to release the bobbin.
Figure 6 is a cross section through the device taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 2 showing the springs for urging the jaws together and also bars positioned to be engaged by blocks carried by the jaws for urging the stripping elements against the bobbin.
Figure 7 is a view showing one of the cams with the cam in the return position whereby the cams are moved out of the paths of the rollers.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved bobbin stripper of this invention includes a head it carried by a piston rod ll extended from a piston 12 in a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 13 and having gripping jaws M- and i5 pivotally mounted by pins 16 and 17, respectively on the head lit and urged together by springs lid and 119, and rubbing or stripping blocks 2i and 2t carried by bars and Z2 pivotally mounted in the machine with pins 2% and respectively, whereby upon return movement of the piston and head iii the blocks as and :27 carried by the head ll) spread the bars 22 and 23), against the action of springs 23 and 29 whereby the stripping elements 2% and iii are urged against the body 36' of a bobbin.
The gripping jaws M and 15 are provided with sockets 3i and respectively that are positioned to receive and grip a head 33- on the end of a bobbin 30, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
The jaws and 15 are provided with arcuate outwardly extended arms 34 and 35 having rollers 36 and 37 rotatably mounted by pins 38 and 39 in extended ends thereof and, with outward movement of the piston rod and head the rollers are positioned to engagecams db and ll pivotally mounted by pins 42 and 43 and resiliently held by springs and 45. The cams are pivotally mounted by the pins on blocks 46 and 47, respectively, of the frame of the machine and the springs are positioned with one of the ends thereof secured to the cams with pins 43 and i3 and with the opposite ends secured to the blocks with pins 5i) and 511. With the cams mounted in this manner the rollers as and 3'7 roll over the arcuate surfaces of the cams in the outward movement of the piston rod lit and head llii whereby the jaws 14 and 15 are opened to receive the head of the bobbin and after gripping the head of the bobbin as the rollers roll from the ends of the arcuate surfaces of the cams fluid under pressure is applied to the opposite end of the hydraulic cylinder 13 whereby the piston draws the piston rod and head it) with the gripping jaws thereon through the cams ll and ll and toward the cams 52 and 53 adjacent the end of the cylinder. In this return movement the rollers 36 and 37 engage the flat surfaces of the cams 4th and 41 moving the cams outwardly against the action of the springs 44 and 45, as illustrated in Fig. 7 whereby the jaws l4 and 15 remain in gripping relation with the head of the bobbin.
Upon approaching the earns 52 and 53 the rollers ride on the arcuate surfaces 54- and 55 thereof again forcing the arms and 35 inwardly with the jaws lid and is moving outwardly releasing the head 33 of the bobbin. Upon releasing the bobbin the cycle of movement is started again with the head 10 carrying the jaws 14 and 15 moving toward another bobbin.

With the parts assembled as illustrated and described the bobbin stripping device of this invention is positioned on a machine and with fluid under pressure applied to the extended end of the cylinder 13 the head it with the gripping jaws thereon moves outwardly in the direction of the arrow 62 with the rollers 36 and 37 contacting the arcuate surfaces of the cams 4d and 4.1 and opening the jaws to positions shown in Fig. 3 and as the rollers roll over the ends of the earns the springs 13 and i9 snap the jaws together over the head 33 of a bobbin 3th whereby in the return movement the jaws pull the bobbin and with blocks 26 and 2'! riding against inner surfaces of the bars 22 and 23 the rubbing or stripping elements 20 and 21 are urged inwardly against the bobbin removing all thread therefrom. in this return movement fluid under pressure is supplied to the opposite end of the cylinder 13 and upon reaching the cams 52 and 53 the rollers 35 and are again urged inwardly opening the gripping jaws lid and i5 and releasing the bobbin. With the bobbin released the cycle of operation starts again and fluid is applied to the extended end of the cylinder 13 to drive the head it? and grippir' jaws toward the head of another bobbin.

What is claimed is:
i. A bobbin stripper comprising a fluid pressure actuated cylinder having a piston therein with a piston rod extended from the piston through one end of the cylinder, a head carried by the extended end of. the piston rod, gripping jaws pivotally mounted on the head, means for opening the jaws with outward movement of the head, means for contracting the jaws over the head of a bobbin, said cylinder being adapted to actuate the head in the opposite direction withdrawing the bobbin, pivotally mounted bars having stripping blocks on ends thereof positioned whereby the stripping blocks grip opposite surfaces of the bobbin in the withdrawing movement thereof, blocks carried by the head and positioned to spread extended ends of the bars to urge the stripping blocks into gripping relation with the bobbin for stripping thread from the bobbin in the withdrawing movement, and a spring connected to extended ends of the bars for drawing the extended ends of the bars together for actuating the jaws to release the bobbin.
2. A bobbin stripper comprising a fluid pressure actuated cylinder having a piston therein and also having a piston rod extended from the piston through one end of the cylinder, a head carried by the extended and of the piston rod, coacting gripping jaws pivotally mounted on the head and having outwardly extended arms extended from the pivotal mounting, resilient means for urging the jaws together, means positioned to be engaged by extended ends of the arms for opening the jaws, said cylinder being adapted to actuate the head in the opposite direction, means for stripping threads from the bobbin gripped by the jaws with the head moving in the opposite direction, and means for openings the jaws to release the bobbin.
A yarn remover comprising an elongated cylinder having piston therein with a piston rod extended from the piston through one end of the cylinder, a head carried by the extended end of the piston rod, gripping jaws pivotally mounted on the head and having arcuate arms extended therefrom, rollers rotatably mounted in extended ends of the arcuate arms of the jaws, resilient means for urging the jaws together, cams positioned to be engaged by the rollers for urging the rollers inwardly to open the jaws to receive a head of a bobbin, said rollers being adapted to roll from ends of the cams to release the jaws whereby the resilient means for actuating the jaws draws the jaws into gripping relation with the head of a bobbin, said cylinder being adapted to actuate the head with a bobbin carried by the jaws thereof in a return movement, means for stripping yarn from the bobbin in the return movement, and releasing cams positioned to be engaged by the rollers for opening the jaws to release the bobbin at the end of said return movement.

In a bobbin stripper, the combination which compri =s a cylinder having a piston therein with a piston rod c ended from the piston through one end of the cylinder, head carried by the extended end of the piston rod, gripping jaws having arcuate outwardly extended arms pivotally mounted on the head, springs connected to the jaws for urging the jaws together, rollers rotatably mounted in extended ends of the arms of the jaws, one pair of cams positioned on opposite sides of the axis of the piston rod, means for pivotally mounting the cams whereby the cams are adapted to be engaged by the rollers of the arms for opening the jaws in the outward movement of the head, a second pair of cams also mounted on opposite sides of the axis of the piston rod and positioned to be engaged by the rollers in the arms of the jaws in the return movement of the head, and means for pivotally mounting the second pair of cams.
5. In a bobbin stripper, the combination which comprises a cylinder having a piston therein with a piston rod extended from the piston through one end of the cylinder, head carried by the extended end of the piston rod, gripping jaws having arcuate outwardly extended arms pivotally mounted on the head, springs connected to the jaws for urging the jaws together, rollers rotatably mounted in extended ends of the arms of the jaws, one pair of cams positioned on opposite sides of the axis of the piston rod, means for pivotally mounting the cams whereby the cams are adapted to be engaged by the rollers of the arms for opening the jaws in the outward movement of the head, a second pair of cams also mount- Cd on opposite sides of the axis of the piston rod and positioned to be engaged by the rollers in the arms of the jaws in the return movement of the head, means for pivotaily mounting the second pair of cams, pivotally mounted bars also positioned on opposite sides of the axis of the piston rod, yarn removing elements carried by said bars, and means on the head for engaging the bars to urge the yarn gripping elements against the body of the bobbin, carried by the jaws.
6. In a bobbin stripper, the combination which comprises a cylinder having a piston therein with a piston rod extended from the piston through one end of the cylinder, a head carried by the extended end of the piston rod, gripping jaws having arcuate outwardly extended pivotally mounted on the head, springs connected to the jaws for urging the jaws together, rollers rotatably mounted in extended ends of the arms of the jaws, one pair of cams positioned on opposite sides of the axis of the piston rod, means for pivotally mounting the cams whereby the cams are adapted to be engaged by the rollers of the arms for opening the jaws in the outward movement of the head, a second pair of cams also mounted on opposite sides of the axis of the piston rod and positioned to be engaged by the rollers in the arms of the jaws in the return movement of the head, means for pivotally mounting the second pair of cams, converging bars pivotally mounted on opposite sides of the axis of the piston rod, yarn removing elements carried by the bars and positioned to engage opposite surfaces of the body of a bobbin gripped by the jaws, resilient means connecting the ends of the bars opposite to the ends on which the yarn gripping elements are positioned for urging the bars together, and blocks carried by the head and positioned to engage the bars for urging the bars outwardly in the return movement of the head whereby the yarn gripping elements are urged toward the body of the bobbin for removing yarn from the bobbin in the return movement of said head.
7. In a bobbin stripper, the combination which comprises a cylinder having a piston therein with a piston rod extended from the piston through one end of the cylinder, a head carried by the extended end of the piston rod, gripping jaws having arcuate outwardly extended arms pivotally mounted on the head, springs connected to the jaws for urging the jaws together, rollers rotatably mounted in extended ends of the arms of the jaws, one pair of cams positioned on opposite sides of the axis of the piston rod, means for pivotally mounting the cams whereby the cams are adapted to be engaged by the rollers of the arms for opening the jaws in the outward movement of the head, a second pair of cams also mounted on opposite sides of the axis of the piston rod and positioned to be engaged by the rollers in the arms of the jaws in the return movement of the head, means for carried by the head and positioned to engage the bars for urging the bars outwardly in the return movement of the head whereby the yarn gripping elements are urged toward the body of the bobbin for removing yarn from the bobbin in the return movement of said head.
