*Y wg UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. PRICE, OF INDUSTRY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF EVAPORATING APPARATUS.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. PRICE, of Industry, in the county 0f McDonough, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Evaporating-Pans for Evaporating Saccharine or other J uices; and I do hereby declare'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figurel is a longitudinal elevation. 1 Fig. 2 is a top view with the levers detached. Fig. 3 is a cross-section showing the arrangement of the dampers D D D D and levers t' i t' i.
Similar letters refer to like parts in each figure.
My invention consists in constructing evaporating-pans so that a series of dampers may be inserted between the cross-partition. Th ose dam pers can be lowered to obstruct the heat, as is fully shown in Figs. l and 3 by dotted lines, so that the sirup may be boiled to the proper degree for a sirup or grauulation without any possible chance of scorching or burning.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A A is the furnace, suitably constructed for the pau F, and to carry off the smoke, which escapes at X.
C C C is a series of sections or pans, so constructed and fitted together as to forni one pan, and also forming cross-partitions B B B,
for the purpose of causing the saccharine juice to travel back and forth through the pan, making one continuous stream until it reaches the outlet at S. {See Fig. 2.) Between the cross-partitions B B B B, at the back endof the pau F, there is a narrow strip of metal, t, placed between the crosspartitions B B B B at the top, and riveted fast, (see Fig. 3,) leaving sufficient space between said cross-parti tions to insert the dampers D D D D. As is fully shown in Fig. 1, the dampers D D D D are pivoted to the levers z' il z i at their centers. The levers t' z' t' i are pivoted tothe upright O. (See Fig. 3.)
The operation is as fellows: A suitable fire is made in the furnace A A. The saccharine juice is let into the pan at J, Fig. 2, and the stream follows in the direction of the arrows around the cross-partitions B B B B, making one continuous stream to the outlet S, being reduced by evaporation to the proper degree for sirup or grauulation. If the Sirup in any of the back sections or pans shows any signs of scorching, the damper D, just iu front of said section or pan, is pressed down with the lever fi, which obstruets 4the heat, and causes the current of heat t0 travel lower, as is shown in Fig. l by red arrows, which immediately stops said scorching. In evaporating apparatuses -heretofore constructed the dempers (if any are placed in the furnace) obstruct the heatcontinually, and are liable to warp and do but little goed, if any. In my improvelnent the dampers are inserted between the cross-partitions B B B B, so that they do not obstruct the heat only when it is necessary, as shown in Fig. l.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Oonstructing evaporatingvpans with a series of danipers, D D D D, inserted between the cross-partitions B B B B, and operated with a series of levers, z' i. i, substantially as shown, for the purpose specified.
THOMAS J. PRICE.
