Claims. (Cl. -12)v sash and the frame stile due to expansion and contraction 1 which causes, on the one hand, sticking of the sash so it cannot be raised and lowered and, on the other hand, rattling of the sash and air leakage resulting in poor insulation. Many attempts have been made to overcome these difficulties, principally embodied in various forms of resilient metal structures intended to provide a close and weatherproof but slidable fit between the standing and moving parts of the window and associated with parting bead structures which separate the two sashes of a double hung window.
The principal disadvantages of such structures have been that if provided with means to secure them adequately in place, they were insufliciently flexible or resilient and if made sufficiently resilient they were inadequately secured in place. Where flexibility and security were combined in such structures they were too complicated and expensive for economic manufacture and installation.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a structure for use principally in double hung windows which provides secure weathertight retention of the sash in the frame stiles and casings and which separates the sash and at the same time is securely retained in place and which, in turn, securely holds the sash in place while retaining a flexibility which is sufficient to allow for expansion and contraction of the parts of the window structure due to heat and cold, dampness and dryness and the like, and which at the same time is inexpensive to manufacture and to install.

In the drawings Fig. 1 shows a double hung window including an inside casing 1, an outside casing 1', an associated frame stile 2, an upper sash 3, and a lower sash 4.
A combined parting bead and Weatherstrip indicated at 5 is arranged between the frame stile 2 and the sashes 3 and 4. The structure 5 is preferably made of a resilient sheet metal and it extends from the top to the bottom of the window-on each side thereof. In plan it has a U-shaped portion 10 which forms a parting bead disposed between the sashes 3 and 4, a pair of laterally extending side flanges 11 having turned in free edges 12 which rest against the face 13 of the frame stile along which the sashes 3 and 4 slide. Between the parting bead per- 2 tion 10 and one of the flanges 11 is. an oppositely bent folded rib. portion 15 extending longitudinally of the structure 5 and which. is resiliently received in a longitudinal saw kerf 20 or groove which is cut in the face 13. of the stile 2 for the purpose. The structure 5 is arranged so that except at the inturned free edges 12, clearance is provided between itself and the face 13 of the frame stile. The saw kerf 20-i's deeper than the width of. the rib portion 15 with the result that while, the saw kerf 20 retains the structure 5 and hence the. window sash in place with respect to lateral direction, a resiliency is provided. for the parting bead portion 10 toward and away from the face 13 ofthe frame stile to accommodate large tolerances in sizes of sash and also expansion and contraction while maintaining good contact between the sash and the frame stile. When the structure 5 is compressed between the sashes 3 and 4 and the frame stile 2, the flanges 11 resiliently spread apart against the face 13 of the frame stile 2 and the rib portion 15 further enters the saw kerf 20.
A pair of joint liners indicated at 25 and 25', the details of which are better seen in Fig. 3, are associated with the structure 5 in the relationship seen in Fig. 1. They are formed of resilient sheet material and each is bent to form a corner portion 26 and 26 respectively which is received in a corner between the frame stile 2 and a casing member 1 and 1' respectively and a resilient portion 27 and 27' bent away from the face 13 of the frame stile 2 and a free edge portion 28 and 28 preferably folded over and resting laterally slidably on the flange 11 of the structure 5. Edge portions 29 and 29 respectively which rest against the casings 1 and 1 provide contact with adjacent faces of the sashes 3 and 4.
In Fig. l the spaces between the sashes 3 and 4 and the face 13 of the frame stile 2 and also the spaces between the sashes and the casing 1 and 1 are exaggerated for clarity of illustration but it is seen that the combined structure forms a continuous weatherproof contact between the sashes and the adjoining surfaces of the frame stile and casings, which at the same time is sufliciently resilient to allow for a great deal of come and go between the parts due to expansion and contraction and which at the same time provides firm but slidable contact between the parts and which is securely held in place.
We claim:
1. A combined parting bead and weather strip structure formed of resilient sheet material comprising an elongated U-shaped parting bead portion, a pair of resilient flanges extending laterally substantially normally from the sides of the parting bead portion, one of said flanges and one side of said parting head portion forming a folded rib portion extending in the plane of said one side and oppositely to the parting bead portion, said flanges having outside edges turned on the sides of the flanges opposite the parting bead portion forming portions displaced from the intermediate portions of the flanges.
2. In combination with the structure as set forth in claim 1, a joint liner formed of resilient sheet material bent to form a corner portion having sides generally normal to each other, adjacent the corner portion the material on one said side forming a resilient portion which is bent inwardly from the plane of said side and having a free edge turned back out and arranged to rest laterally slidably on one of said flanges when said corner portion is received in a corner between a window frame stile and easing.
3. In a window structure and in combination a frame stile having a vertical longitudinal kerf in its face, a combined parting bead and weather strip structure formed of resilient sheet material comprising anelongated U- shaped parting bead portion, a pair of resilient flanges t a V 3 extending laterally substantially normally from the sides of the parting bead portion, one of said flanges and one side of said parting head portion forming a folded rib portion extending in the plane of said one side and mediate portions being spaced from theframe stile.
' 4. In the combination as set forth in claim 3, a pair of sashes vertically slidable relative to said stile face, said parting bead portion extending between said sashes and said flanges extending laterally between said sashes and said frame stile face.
5. In the combination as set forth in claim 4, said structure including a casing forming a corner with said ill frame stile, a joint liner formed-of resilient sheet material bent to form a corner portion having sides generally normal to each other, adjacent said corner the material on one said side forming a resilient portion which is bent inwardly from the plane of said side and having a free edge turned back out and resting laterally slidably on one of said flanges with its intermediate portion spaced therefrom, said corner portion being received in said corner between the casing and the stile.
