' INVENTOR. Anthony G. Rosa. 7 /6 ATTORNEY- United States Patent LOCKING DEVICES Anthony G. Rosa, Lyndhurst, N. J. Application July 9, 1956, Serial No. 596,545
2 Claims. (Cl. 120--9) This invention relates to locking devices, and it has for its purpose to provide a screw cap locking device that will securely prevent any detachment of an article secured, for instance, by a chain to an object, such, for example, as in banks or post oflices where a penholder is chained to a table.
While the above illustrates one use of the device, the latter may find application in many various connections.
In the following description, wherein similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts:
Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of my device;
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a transverse section, with part broken off, showing a modification of my device; While Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 illustrating a completed operation of the device as commenced in Figure 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral indicates a barrel and 11 a screw cap threaded upon said barrel, as shown at 15.
A cartridge 12 is disposed in said barrel; said cartridge is made with a few enlargements or humps 13 formed upon the side thereof.
The screw cap 11 has a transverse portion 14 or flute bushing formed integral therewith, or inserted therein; said portion has a cut-out or socket 16 in its lower part adapted to seat an enlargement 13 of the cartridge.
The barrel 10 has in its upper part arranged a similarly transverse portion 17 formed with a central opening 18 of a shape so as to permit an enlargement 13 of the cartridge to pass up and down therein.
A coil spring 19 is mounted upon the lower part of the cartridge and restricted in its expansion by the enlargement 13 and shoulder 20 in the barrel; while space 21 is left in said barrel to permit movement of the ball point tip 22 of the pen.
A ball chain 23 has a detachable sleeve 24 secured between two balls and held in place by the shoulder 25 of the cap.
In order to remove the ball chain and sleeve it is necessary to press said sleeve 24 downwardly against the upper end of the cartridge 12, whereby the upper enlargement 13 will become disengaged from the socket 16 and "ice assume a position approximately as indicated by 13 in dotted lines; while simultaneously the next to the upper enlargement will also move downwardly as shown at 13' in dotted lines.
By thus extricating the upper enlargement 13' from said socket, it is possible to unscrew the cap 11, thus permitting the separation of the cap from the barrel and cartridge.
In Figures 4 and 5 is shown a modification as to the operation of the device, while the principle as to releasing the cap from the barrel is substantially the same.
Thus in Figure 4 the cap 11' is formed with a through opening 27, which permits the insertion of a pin 28 or the like,'by means of which the cartridge 12', that in this instance is shorter, is pressed downwardly so as to release the enlargement 13" from the socket 16', as may be seen in Figure 5.
I claim as my invention:
1. A screw cap locking device comprising a barrel, a cartridge mounted in the latter, humps formed on the sides of the cartridge, a cap screwthreaded upon said barrel, an enlargement within the barrel, said enlargement having a transversely extending opening therein for the passage of the cartridge, another enlargement within the cap, said enlargement being formed with an opening therethrough and a transverse socket at its lower end adapted to seat a hump laterally extensible thereinto, whereby, when said bumps are therein relative rotation between the cap and barrel is prevented, the cap having an opening at its top, a shoulder surrounding said opening, a sleeve mounted in the latter and being retained therein by said shoulder, said sleeve being adapted to actuate the cartridge in a downward direction to disengage the said hump from said socket, whereby to permit the unscrewing of the cap from the barrel.
2. A screw cap locking device comprising a barrel, a cartridge mounted in the latter, humps formed on the sides of the cartridge, a cap screwthreaded upon said barrel, a transversely extending enlargement within the barrel, said enlargement having an opening therein for the passage of the cartridge, another enlargement within the cap, said enlargement being formed with an opening therethrough and a transverse socket at its lower end adapted to seat a hump laterally extensible thereinto, whereby, when said humps are therein relative rotation between the cap and barrel is prevented, the cap having an opening at its top, a shoulder surrounding said opening, a ball chain, a sleeve mounted between two balls of said chain and being retained by said shoulder, one of said balls actuating the cartridge in a downward direction, whereby to disengage the hump from said socket and permit the unscrewing of the cap from the barrel.
