Application November 6, 1956, Serial No. 620,614
Claims. (Cl. 33-27) The present invention relates to new and useful im provernents in scribers, compasses or the like.
An important object of the invention is to shape the scriber from a blank of relatively thin sheet metal capable of being folded upon itself into U-shape to provide a pair of rigidly connected legs and with one leg cylindrical in shape to adjustably secure a marker therein and with the other leg of double thickness and to which a pointer is pivotally attached.
Another object is to mount a pair of spirit level tubes at the head of the scriber and at opposite sides of the latter to indicate either the horizontal or vertical position of the scriber.
A further object is to provide a tool of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational View;
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on a line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on a line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view showing the scriber held in a horizontal position against the work; and
Figure 5 is a plan view of the metal blank.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration 1 have disclosed a preferred em bodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a blank which may be stamped, punched or cut from bendable sheet metal to form a pair of U-shaped members 6 and 7 each including leg blanks 8, 9, 10 and 11 and with the legs 9 and 1t) united with each other along their outer longitudinal edges. The legs 9 and 10 are folded upon each other along a longitudinal medial line 12 and are curved to a cylindrical or tubular shape to form a holder 13 for a pencil 14. The pencil is secured in vertically adjusted position in the holder 13 by a bolt and wing nut 15 secured in a pair of aligned apertured ears 16 which project outwardly from the free longitudinal edge portion of the legs 9 and 10.
The folding of the pair of U-shaped blanks 6 and 7 upon themselves along the medial line 12 form a single U-shaped scriber 17 with the pencil holder 13 forming one leg of the scriber and the pair of leg blanks 8 and 11 forming the other leg 18 of the scriber. The pencil holder 13 and leg 18 of the scriber are united by a head portion 19.
A link 20 is pivoted at one end to the free end portion States Patent 0 of leg 18 by a rivet 21 and a pointer 22 is pivoted to the other end of the link by a rivet 23 for swinging the link and pointer vertically independently. The free end of the pointer is preferably curved outwardly.
A transverse slot 24 is cut in the head portion 19 of the scriber and in which a U-shaped resilient clip 25 is secured to both U-shaped members 6 and 7. A pair of resilient semicylindrical clips 26 and 27 are soldered or otherwise suitably secured to the clip 25 in a position to hold a pair of spirit level tubes 28 and 29 at opposite sides of the head 19 and at right angles to the legs of the scriber.
The scriber may be used as a compass for marking circular patterns of various diameters by raising and lowering the pivoted link 20 and pointer 22. The device may also be used for marking the contour 30 of Woodwork 31 for matching with the irregular contour 32 when finishing around a stone fireplace 33, as shown in Figure 4. When using the tool in this manner the same is held horizontally and the bubbles of the spirit level tubes 28 and 29 will aid in keeping the tool in that position.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described and, accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A scriber comprising a U-shaped member including a pair of leg portions and a head portion rigidly connected to each other, means securing a marker to one of the leg portions, a pointer pivotally connected to the other leg portion, and a pair of spirit level tubes secured to the opposite sides of said head portion and at right angles to said leg portions.
2. A scriber comprising a U-shaped member including a pair of leg portions and a head portion rigidly connected to each other, means securing a marker to one of the leg portions, a pointer pivotally connected to the other leg portion, said head portion having a transverse slot, a clip secured in the slot, and a pair of spirit level tubes carried by the clip and supported thereby at opposite sides of the head portion in a position at right angles to the leg portions.
3. In a scriber, a blank of bendable sheet material shaped to provide a pair of U-shaped members each including a pair of leg portions and a head portion, said pair of U-shaped members being united at one of their leg portions and foldable upon each other along a longitudinal medial line at their united leg portions, means securing the pair of U-shaped members to each other in folded position, a tubular marker holder at the united leg portion, and a pointer pivotally connected to the remaining leg portions.
4. In a scriber, a blank of bendable sheet material shaped to provide a pair of U-shaped members each including a pair of leg portions and a head portion, said pair of U-shaped members being united at one of their leg portions and foldable upon each other along a longitudinal medial line at their united leg portions, means securing the pair of U-shaped members to each other in folded position, a tubular marker holder at the united leg portion, a link pivotally connected to the remaining leg portions, and a pointer pivotally connected to the link.
