United States Patent 1 2,827,682 FORW HOLDER FOR STAIR RISER Jurd E. Saylors, iiincinnafi, Ohio Application April 22, 1955, Serial No. 503,171 1 (Ilaim. (Cl. 25-418) This invention relates generally to concrete form construction and is more particularly concerned with a form holder utilized generally with concrete form elements such as those used in forming the risers of concrete stairways.
Accordingly a primary object in conformance with that set forth above is to provide a form holder which is adapted to provide ready implacement and removal of concrete form elements utilized in the formation of concrete structures.
Another object of invention in conformance with that set forth above is to provide a form holder which permits ready implacement and removal of concrete form elements, and which is simple to use, readily manipulable, and economical to manufacture.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a front elevation of a portion of a stairway showing concrete form elements utilized with the novel form holders in forming the risers of a concrete stairway;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 4-4 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is an exploded perspective view showing the base plate and bolt retaining sleeve of the novel form holder.
indicated generally at is a concrete stairway which includes side walls 12 and a plurality of steps 14, the risers 16 of which being formed by utilizing a concrete form element indicated generally at 18.
The form elements 18 comprise an elongated board 20 which extends between the inner side walls 22 of the stairway, said board being readily insertable therebetween. The board 20 includes a plurality of form holder elements 24 for retaining the boards 20 in a vertical position between the side walls 12 of the stairway in order that the concrete 26 may be poured between the side walls 12 and the tops 28 of the steps 14 may be accordingly formed in the usual manner.
Although the form holder elements are disclosed as being utilized in the formation of stairway risers, it is believed readily apparent that the novel form holder elements may be utilized in other types of concrete construction wherein it is desirable to utilize elements of this character which may be readily implaced and removed.
The form holder elements 24 include a base plate 30 having a forward upwardly extending flange 32, said base plate being secured to the board 20 by means of suitable fasteners 34 which may be wood screws having heads cooperating with the countersunk holes 36 extending through the base plate. It will be noted that the flange 32 will be inwardly disposed relative to the edge 38 of the board 20 which is in approximate position with the side wall of the stairway. The base plate includes extending therethrough on the central longitudinal axis an elongated aperture 40 and rear notched out portion 42.
A tubular guide element 44 may be formed from a single sheet of material bent to form the tubular support "ice portion 46 which terminates in a radially disposed web 48 having formed on its ends securing portions 50, said securing portions being insertable through the slot 40 and notched out portion 42 and being bent over at right angles, as seen in Figure 4, to form the securing flanges 52. Although a notch 42 is disclosed in the base 30, it is believed readily apparent that a pair of slotted apertures 40 may be utilized therein. The flange 32 includes a central circular aperture 54 which is coaxial with the tubular sleeve 46, the purpose of which may become subsequently apparent.
Extending through the aperture 54 and into the tubular sleeve 46 is a bolt element 56 including the head 58 and threaded portion 69. A not element 62 is threaded upon portion tl between the flange 32 and the forward edge 64 of the tubular sleeve 46.
Operation of the novel form holders is believed to be readily apparent. The boards 20 are properly levelled and oriented between the side Walls 12 of the stairway. The head 58 of the form holder is placed in juxtaposition with the side 22 of the side wall of the stairway whereupon the bolt 62 is threaded toward the tubular support 46 and urged into contact with the edge 64 thereof whereupon the board as will be rigidly retained in position. The bolt head 58 and nut 62 may be retained or held in their position while tightening the nut 62 by means of suitable wrenches. After the concrete has been poured and permitted to set, the nuts 62 are threaded toward the head 58 of the bolt, and the boards 20 and form holders therewith may be readily removed and utilized again.
Thus it is believed readily apparent that there has been disclosed a novel form holder which fully conforms with the objects of invention heretofore set forth.
Any positional directional terms such as front, rear, right, etc., are utilized herein to have only a relative connotation to aid in describing the device, and are not intended to be interpreted as requiring any particular orientation with respect to any external elements.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
In a concrete form element adapted to be used between two oppositely disposed walls, a form holder including a base member, means for securing said base member to the form element, a flange portion extending upwardly from said base member, said flange portion having an aperture therethrough, a tubular support element carried by said base member spaced from said flange portion and in coaxial alignment with said aperture, a bolt element including a threaded stem extendible through said flange and tubular support element, said bolt element including a head engageable with a side wall, and a threaded element on said stem between said flange and an edge portion of said tubular support element, said base member having an elongated aperture and an elongated notch extending therethrough on the longitudinal axis of said base member, said tubular support element including a radial web having securing portions extendible through said elongated aperture and said elongated notch and detachably securable therein.
