HORSE COLLAR.

N. PEIERS. Pllclo-lnha PATENT OF ICE.
FRANCIS A. HAKE,
or OUERO, TEXAS.-
HORSE-COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,721, dated August '7, 1883.
Application filed November 4. 18542. (No model.)
.To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS A. HAKE, of Cuero, in the State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Col- 5 lars, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front view of my new and improved collar with one side removed, and Fig. 2-is an enlarged edge view of one of the limbs partly in section.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved collar; and it consists in forming a portion of the large roll of the collar with leather, and the other part with canvas or ducking of two thicknesses, between which double part of ducking or canvas is placed a medicated composition and preservative, which serves as a remedial agent for the g tlling of horses shoulders, and as a prevent- 1V6 against gnawing of the collar by vermin. It also relates to an improved manner of stitching together the collarroll, all of which will now be set forth in detail.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the small roll, and B the large roll, of a collar. The small roll is composed of apiece of leather, A, of suitable width to form the roll. The large roll, B, is composed of two pieces of dif- 30 ferent material. The front part of the roll,
where the hame comes in contact with the collar, has a leather strip, 0, one side of which is stitched to the leather A along the crease D.
The other edge, E, is lapped over the ducking 35 or canvas F and stitched thereto, thereby preventing a ridge from being formed at this con- 'necting-point, as is now done by the usual method of joining the two parts.
Before the face-piece O is stitched to the canvas F a leather strip, G, is stitched onto the 0 piece near the edge E, and after said face-piece C is .secured to the canvas F the strip G is turned back over the stitch, so as to cover the joint or seam, as shown in Fig. 2. The canvas or ducking F constitutes the other part of the 5 large roll, and is formed of two or more thicknesses of equal size, one edge of which is attached to the leather edge E, and the other edge stitched to the inner side, along the crease H, to the leather roll A.
. 5 Before the two pieces of canvas or ducking are put together and united their inner surfaces are coated with a medicated composition of such a character as may be desired to protect the ducking from the depredations of ver- 55 min, or to prevent galling of the shoulders of the animals. I
Having described my invention, what I claim 1s+ In collars, the roll B, composed of the leather 6o strip 0 and the double-thickness canvas or ducking F, united at its forward edge by lapping and stitching, as shown, and the seam covered by the strip G, substantially as herein shown.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of August, 1882, in the presence of witnesses.
' FRANCIS A. HAKE.
