Description
March 18, 1958 'R. 1.. SMITH FIRESIDE BROILER Filed July 25, 1956 FIG. 3.
INVENTOR ROY L. SMITH United States Patent FIRESIDE BROILER Roy L. Smith, Parks, Ariz. Application July 23, 1956, Serial No. 599,653
3 Claims. (Cl. 99-393) This invention relates to food cookers or broilers.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a food cooker or broiler designed for use near an open fire such as a fireplace, camp fire or the like, which may be collapsed when not in use in a novel manner for greater portability and compactness, all of the parts being collapsed or removed and placed into the boxlike base member forming a part thereof.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a fireside broiler of the above type wherein the broiler bar, forming a part thereof, may be turned in an easy and ready manner to permit the food to be turned without removing from the broiler bar to effect an economy of time during the cooking operation.
' Other objects of the invention are to provide a fireside broiler bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture, and elficient in operation.
7 For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which: a
Figure l is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the present invention with the parts shown in operative relationship to each other for cooking the food;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and illustrating in phantom the collapsed position of the parts after the broiling rod has been removed;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary front elevational view shown partly in section of the connection of the broiling rod to the upright; and
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of one of the parts of the invention used for turning the broiler rod.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, there is shown a boxlike base member including the side walls and the end walls 11 as well as the rectangular bottom wall 12, substantially as illustrated.
A transverse rod 13 has the opposite ends thereof journalled in the sides 10 at one end of the base and fixedly mounts at the center thereof at right angles thereto the tubular upright 14 by means of welding or the like, the upright 14 being open at the top for a purpose which will hereinafter become clear. The upright 14 is also provided with a transverse opening 15.
A second transverse rod 16 has the opposite ends thereof mounted in the side walls 10 near the other end of the base and hingeably mounts the supporting rod 17 by means of the looped portion 18 provided at the end thereof, as will be obvious. The other end of the rod 17 is formed with the laterally bent portion 19 which passes through the opening in the upright 14 whereby to support the same. It will be apparent that upon removing the laterally bent portion 19 of rod 17 from the upright, that both the rod 17 and upright 14 may be rotated into the base member as shown in phantom in Fig. 2.
A broiler rod 20 is provided and fixedly mounts a plurality of longitudinally spaced hooks 21 upon which the meat to be broiled or cookedwill be supported. Each of the hooks may be provided in pairs located at the ends of the U-shaped members 22 which pass downwardly through suitable openings'provided in the broiler rod 20. The central most rod 22 formed with the hooks 21 at the opposite ends is also provided with a centrally located loop 23 for a purpose which will hereinafter become clear. The broiler rod is mounted at the top of the upright by means of a fixedly mounted depending, centrally located pin 24 which extends downwardly into the upper end of the upright 14, but being provided at its lower end with a notch 25 which is received onto a transverse pin 26 fixedly mounted in the upper end of the upright.
A wire handle (Fig. 4) is provided and includes the elongated portion 27 formed at one end with the hook 28 and at the other with the handle loop 29, substantially as illustrated.
In operation, the meat will be supported on the hooks 21 with the broiler rod 20 locked in position by the end of the notch 25 and pin 26. However, upon raising the broiler rod slightly by means of the hook 28 of the wire handle member 27, the broiler rod may then be rotated through 180 degrees to again bring the notch into registry with the pin and to lock the broiler bar by lowering the same. By means of this construction, the meat may be turned without removing the same from the hooks to effect an economy of time. When not in use, the upright 14 will be collapsed into the base member and the broiler rod removed therefrom and placed similarly therewithin.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters I Patent of the United States is:
1. A fireside broiler comprising a base member having side walls and end walls, a first transverse rod having the ends thereof journalled in said side walls adjacent one of the end walls, a hollow tubular upright secured to the center of said first transverse rod at right angles thereto, the upper end of said tubular upright being open, releasable means for locking said upright in the upright position and to permit its collapsing intermediate said side walls, a broiler rod having a plurality of supporting hooks for supporting meat thereon, means for removably mounting said broiler rod at the upper end of said upright and to permit its rotational movement through 180 degrees whereby to turn the meat without removing the same from the hooks, said means for supporting said upright comprising a second transverse rod having the opposite ends thereof connected to' said side walls near the other end of said base member, a rod rotatably mounted on said second transverse'rod at one end, the other end of said supporting rod having a laterally bent portion, said upright having an opening adapted to receive said laterally bent portion therewithin when in the upright position and to permit its removal therefrom to collapse the upright and supporting rod onto said first and said transverse rods, said means for mounting the broiler red at the upper end of said upright comprising a depending pin fixedly carried by said broiler rod at the center thereof and adapted to be received within the upper end of said upright, a notch at the lower end of said pin, and a second transverse pin secured within the upper end of said upright adapted to be received within said notch whereby to lock said broiler rod against rotational movement about said pin.
2. A fireside broiler according to claim 1, including a ring at the center of said broiler rod to permit h raising of the same and the release of said pin from said notch and to permit the rotation of said broiler through 180 degrees whereby upon release of said ring the broiler rod will again be locked in position by said notch and 3. A fireside broiler according to claim 2, said hooks being formed by the provision in said broiler rod of Iongitudinally spaced pairs of openings thercthioug'n, and U-shaped members having their central portions supported on said broiler rod with their end portions passing downwardly through said openings therein and being formed with said hooks, the central most of said U- shaped members being formed with said ring at the center thereof.
