Application April 7, 1955, Serial No. 499,885
1 Claim. (Cl. 131-198) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in cigarette holders constructed with air inlet means leading to the smoke passage to mix with and cool the smoke before reaching the mouth of the user and to aid smokers in quitting the habit.
An important object of the invention is to provide a cigarette holder constructed of a front section and a rear section threadedly connected to each other and forming a lateral air inlet passage in one of the sections to admit fresh air to the smoke passage of the holder and controlled by the threaded telescoping movement of one section relative to the other.
Another object is to construct the holder with threadedly connected male and female sections and providing the latter with a lateral fresh air inlet passage controlled by a valve at the inserted end of the former.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accampanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view;
Figure 2 is a group perspective View;
Figure 3 is -a longitudinal sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 1 and showing the air inlet passage closed;
Figure 4 is a View similar to Figure 3 and showing the air inlet passage open; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged transverse sectional View taken on a line 5-5 of Figure 4 and slightly modified.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numerals 5 and 6 designate rear male and front female sections respectively of a cigarette holder secured to each other in assembled relation by threads 7.
The front end of front section 6 is formed with a recess 8 to snugly receive a cigarette 9 and a smoke passage 10 leads rearwardly from the recess axially of the holder to a flared mixing chamber 11 at the rear end of the front section. The front end of rear section 5 is tapered to comformably lit in the ared mixing chamber and close and till the same as shown in Figure 3 or may be slightly inclined with respect thereto as shown in Fig. 4.
2,823,680 iatented Feb. 18, 1958 ICC A pair of lateral fresh air inlet passages 12 and 13 are formed at diametrically opposite lateral portions of front section 6 to admit air to the mixing chamber 11 and the front section has an internal annular shoulder 14 at the junction of smoke passage 10 and chamber 11 and which provides a valve seat for a valve 15 at the tapered front end of the rear section of the holder. Smoke passage 10 is axially aligned with a smoke passage 16 in the rear section or mouth piece 5.
A metal band 17 is countersunk in the rear portion of front section 6 flush with the surface thereof to cover and protect the threads on the rear section 5 when the latter is partly retracted to open the fresh air passages 12 and 13.
In the operation of the device, the air inlet passages 12 and 13 are closed when the rear section 5 is threaded tightly inwardly in the front section to close the valve 15 against shoulder 14 and undiluted smoke passes from the cigarette to the mouth piece. By backing out the mouth piece or rear section 5, the valve 15 is opened and the mouth piece retracted sufficiently to open the air inlet passages 12 and 13 to mix fresh air with the smoke as it enters chamber 11 and thus cool the smoke.
Since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A cigarette holder comprising a front section and a rear section threadedly connected to each other and having axially aligned smoke passages, an expansible chamber at the junction of said smoke passages, lateral air inlet passage means in one of the sections leading to the chamber and adapted to admit fresh air thereto for mixing with the smoke, a valve seat on one of the sections at its meeting end, a valve on the other of said sections at its meeting end engaging the valve seat upon a connecting movement of said section to close said air inlet, and a sealing band at the rear end of the front section and projecting rearwardly therefrom in constant overlapping covering relation with the threads of the rear section during relative movement of the front and rear sections to open or close the air inlet.
