4 Claims. 01. 42-75) This invention relates to a receiver construction for firearms and more particularly to the construction of this receiver and an associated casing structure within which is supported the action mechanism of the gun.
As illustrated, the gun is of the repeating type having provision for reception of a clip or magazine containing cartridges which are fed into the chamber by the action of the bolt. The receiver is provided with a channel or passage within which the bolt reciprocates, and below this channel are provided a pair of plates constituting a casing structure to receive the clip or magazine and to support various parts of the action.
This casing structure consists of two plates secured to the receiver in a novel manner and in spaced relation so that the plates will be supported both internally and externally. At the same time the parts are so designed that they may be economically manufactured and assembled in a simple and inexpensive manner. Moreover, the arrangement is such that the upper edges of these spaced plates of the casing form the bottom of the guide channel for the bolt so that the latter in its reciprocating movements rides upon the upper edges of these plates.
One object of the invention is the provision of a novel and improved receiver construction for firearms.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a combined receiver and associated casing for a firearm, the parts of which may be economically manufactured and assembled in an inexpensive manner to form a rigid structure.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a receiver for a firearm of generally inverted U-shaped form in cross section and a casing secured to the receiver below the same, the casing consisting of a pair of spaced plates, the upper edges of which are received within the receiver to abut the inner faces of the walls thereof, the plates being held in spaced position by downwardly projecting lugs at the ends of the receiver which rest snugly between the inner faces of the plates.
To these and other ends the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a firearm embodying my improvements;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the combined receiver and casing apart from the gun;
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the receiver structure alone;
Fig. 5 is a front elevational view of the structure shown in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
To illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention there is shown in the drawing a gun comprising the usual stock 10 formed integrally with a forearm or hand rest structure 11 to which is secured a barrel 12 having the usual cartridge chamber 13. An opening 14 is provided between the stock and forearm structure within which is disposed the receiver designated generally by the numeral atent Z t 15 and the casing structure designated generally by th numeral 16, this casing structure, as will be hereinafter described, comprising a pair of substantially parallel spaced plate members between which is supported the action mechanism designated generally by the numeral 17. As the action mechanism is not a part of the present invention, no detailed description thereof is necessary.
The receiver structure designated by the numeral 15 on Figs. 1 to 3 and shown in detail in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, is of substantially inverted U-shaped form in cross section having an upper wall 18 and downwardly depending spaced side walls 19 and 20. It also includes a forward wall 21 provided with an opening 22 to receive the rear end of the barrel, as shown in Fig. 1, and a tapered rear wall 23. The barrel may be secured to the receiver by V the pin 22.
At the forward end of the receiver is provided a downwardly and forwardly extending lug 24. The width of this lug is, as shown more especially in Fig. 5, less than the distance between the side walls 19 and 20 of the receiver so that the plate members which constitute the casing as hereinafter described may be positioned against the outer faces of the lug and at the same time be received between the side walls 19 and 20 of the receiver.
At the rear end of the receiver structure a similar downwardly depending lug 25 is provided, this lug also being of a width less than the distance between the side Walls of the receiver so that the rear ends of the plate members may likewise be placed against the outer surfaces of the lug and held securely thereby against inward displacement as they are at their forward ends by the lug 24.
The lugs 24 and 25 are provided with vertical openings 26 and 27 to receive screws 28 and 29 to screw the receiver structure to the gun and are also provided with transverse openings 30 and 31 for securement of the plate members thereto as will be hereinafter described.
The casing structure which is adapted to support the action mechanism 17 consists of a pair of identically formed spaced parallel plate members 32, shown more especially in Figs. 3, 5 and 6. These plate members are each provided with an upwardly projecting portion 33 somewhat shorter than the plate but which, as shown in Fig. 3 and Fig. 6, are adapted to be received between the walls 19 and 20 of the receiver structure so that the outer faces of these portions of the plates lie snugly against the inner faces of the wall members of the receiver. Each of the plate members 32 is provided with a forward ear 34 having an opening therein to receive a fastening member 35 which extends through the opening 30 of the lug 24 to secure the forward ends of the plates to the receiver. Likewise at their rear ends the plates are provided with an opening to receive a fastening member 36 which passes through the opening 31 of the lug 25 to secure the rear ends of the plates in place.
With this arrangement it will be seen that the inner faces of the plates 32 lie against the outer faces of the lugs 24 and 25 and are thus supported against inward displacement thereby. Also by reason of the fact that the upper edges 33 of these plates are received between the walls 19 and 20, they are held against outward displacement by these walls. Therefore, when the plates are secured in place by the fastening members 35 and 36 they will be rigidly held in parallel spaced relation against both inward and outward displacement.
It may be noted that the U-shaped receiver structure faces downwardly and, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6, for example, the upper edges 3'7 of the portions 33 of the side plates form a bottom structure for the receiver and the reciprocating bolt 38 is adapted to ride upon these surfaces in its reciprocating movement.
The opening 14 in the frame of the gun may be closed by a plate 39 which is in turn provided with an opening 40 'for the reception of the cartridge clip which is retained in a "frame shown conventionally at 41 and supported between the plates 32.
While I.have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that it'is not to be limited to all of the details shown, but is capable of modification and variation within the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the claims.
What I claim is: r
1. In a firearm, a barrel, a receiver secured to the barrel, and having a bolt guide channel in axial alignment with the barrel including an upper wall and depending side walls, and having a downwardly facing open chamber below said bolt guide channel, said receiver also having a forward and a rearward downwardly extending integral lug of width substantially less than the distance between the said side walls, whereby the side faces of the lugs are spaced inwardly from the inner faces of the side walls, a unit removably engaged in said open chamber having an upper portion constituting the base of said channel, said unit having side wall portions intermediate its ends the upper edges of which extend into said chamber and to be retained against outward movement by the side walls of the receiver and having forward and rearward integral extensions adapted to receive between them the forward and rearward downwardly depending integral lugs of the receiver to retain the side walls thereof against inward displacement, a bolt engaged in said channel for reciprocating movement, the upper portion of said unit having a horizontal guide portion in downwardly spaced relationship to said upper wall of the receiver which in cooperation with said upper wall and side walls of the receiver guides the bolt in its reciprocating movement 2. In a firearm, a barrel, a receiver secured to the barrel having a bolt guide channel in axial alignment with the barrel, said receiver comprising a member of inverted U-shaped form in cross section having downwardly depending spaced walls, a downwardly depending lug at each end of the receiver of a width less than the spacing of said walls, whereby the side faces of the lugs are spaced inwardly from the inner faces of said walls,-a casing structure below said receiver comprising a pair of spaced walls, the forward and rear ends of which abut the outer faces of said lugs and the upper edges of which extend upwardly into the receiver to lie against the inner faces of the walls 5 4 a r r of the receiver, and means securing the casing structure to the receiver.
3. In a firearm, a barrel, a receiver secured to the barrel and having an upper wall and downwardly depending spaced'side walls defining a downwardly facing opening, a lug at each end of the receiver of a width less than the distance between said walls, whereby the side faces of the lugs are spaced inwardly from the inner faces of said side walls, a casing comprising a pair of spaced parallel plates having end portions secured against the outer face of said lugs to "be braced thereby against inward displacement, said plates having upper edge portions extending into the downwardly facing opening of the receiver to lie against the inner faces of the receiver walls to be held against outward displacement thereby, and the upper edges of the plates forming a bolt guide channel in conjunction with the upper and side walls of the receiver 4. In a firearm, a barrel, a receiver secured to the barrel in axial alignment therewith including an upper wall and depending side walls and having a downwardly facing opening between the side walls, said receiver also having a forward and a rearward downwardly extending integral lug of width less than the distance between said side walls, whereby the side faces of the lugs are spaced inwardly from the inner faces of said side walls, a pair of plates removably engaged in the downwardly facing opening in the receiver with the upper edge of each plate lying against the inner face of one of said side Walls to be retained against outward movement thereby, said plates at their forward and rear ends lying against the outer faces of said depending lugs of the receiver to be retained against inward movement, a bolt disposed in 'said receiver for reciprocating movement, and the upper edges of said plates within said receiver opening being horizontally disposed to provide horizontal guide elements in downwardly spaced relationship to the upper wall of the receiver upon which the bolt may slide. 7
