Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLAUDE M. ATKINSON, OF MILWAUKEE, \VISCONSIN.
GLUE COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 282,034, dated July 31, 1883.
- Application filed June 25, 1883. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE M. ATKINSON, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glue Compounds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to glue compounds; and it consists in the particular compound hereinafter more fully described andclaimed, which is particularly adapted for the fastening together of sheets of paper to form so-called memorandum blocks or tablets. In the manufacture of this class of articles it is desirable to avoid the use of a brittle adhesive substance for cementing the edges of the sheets together, as in handling the blocks or tablets such brittle substance is apt to crack, and thereby permit the sheets to become detached from one another.
My improved glue is prepared as follows: One pound of ordinary glue is dissolved in five ounces of alcohol, and to this I add four ounces of glycerine and about one table-spoonful of aniline dye of any desired color, preferably, for the sake of appearance, of the same color as the backing or coversofthe tablet, where such are used. To this mixture I add a suitable quantity of water, and boil thewhole in an ordinary glue-pot until enough of the water has evaporated to make the composition of the requisite consistency, so that it may be readily applied to the squarelywnt edges of the tablet with a flat paint-brush. After the glue has dried it will be found. Jo possess great tenacity and flexibility, so that while the leaves of the tablet may be turned without detaching, like the leaves in a common book, yet they will not readily become aeci- 'dentally detached.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The herein-described glue compound for the manufacture of memorandum blocks or tablets, composed of common glue, glyeerinc, aniline dye, alcohol, and water, mixed inthe'proportions substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my ownI have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLAUDE MALCOLM ATKINSGN.
