Description

C. A. CATALANO BOTTLE CLOS RE Jan. 14, 1958 Filed May 24, 1955 INVENTOR. [alag'em A filz'a fi'lizwlma HTTOR/VEK United dtates Patent BOTTLE CLOSURE Calogero Atilio Catalano, Buenos Aires, Argentina Application May 24, 1955, Serial No. 510,792
1 Claim. (Cl. 150-8) The present invention relates to closures for containers, and, more particularly, to a novel closure structure, including a stopper, for a container of the type which is generally made of rubber or the like and is used as a container for ice or hot water.
More specifically, the present invention refers to important improvements eifected in stoppers of rubber bags, of the type commonly used for ice or hot water, which comprise a wide mouth provided with a projecting rim. A stem integral with the stopper is lodged in the mouth. The stem is continued in a flexible flange or lap susceptible of being superposed, elastically, on the projecting rim to provide a totally hermetic closure.
Formerly, the mentioned stem was either quite solid or otherwise endowed with radial partitions which, by reason of applied temperature difference or heat, would sufier deformations causing inconveniences in the closure.
Such inconveniences, according to this invention, are obviated in a simple and efficient manner by providing a stem of tubular form having a reinforcement network. This network presents square cells, for example. Upon accumulation of heat there is produced an elastic dilatation which tends to strengthen the closing pressure even more, securing in this ingenious way, an improved closure, despite its simplicity of realization.
Accordingly, the principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel closure for containers.
Another object is to provide a novel stopper for a container.
A further object is to provide a stopper having a flexible rim to overlap a closure flange on a container.
A still further object is to provide a stopper of expansible material having a novel internal construction.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will, of course, become apparent and immediately suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which the invention is directed from a reading of the following specification in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 illustrates a vertical section of a stopper embodying this invention applied in the mouth of a rubber bag; and
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the stopper of Fig. 1.
In both figures, the same reference characters indicate the same or corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawing, reference character 1 indicates a rubber container or bag provided with a mouth 2. The mouth 2 is provided with an annular projection 3. A flexible flange or lap 4 forms an integral part of the stopper 5. The lap 4 is to be mounted on the projection 3 of the stopper 5. The stopper 5 comprises the tubular barrel or nucleus 6, the interior of which is occupied by a network 7 of the same material as the rest of the stopper and is integral with it. The bars or elements of the network enclose a plurality of cells 9, preferably square, open through the lower end of the stopper and closed at the other end.
These cells, upon the heat being accumulated in them, are dilated, forcing the side walls of the stem or stem section of the stopper against the inside wall of the mouth 2, thus producing a totally hermetic closure.
It is understood that the present invention is not limited in any way to the example described and represented, but that diverse modifications of form and/or detail can be introduced, and they are included within the scope of the following claim.
This invention and the manner of carrying it into practice having been described; it is declared that what is claimed as the exclusive property and invention, of the applicant, is the following.
What is claimed is:
A one piece friction type closure for a container comprising a bulbous body, said body being provided with integral interior walls to define a plurality of square cells, said body having a bulging top, and an integral elastic flange having an edge bead, said flange being constructed and arranged so that it is normally cupshaped and is U-shaped in cross section when said closure is applied to a container.
