United States Patent OUTDOOR, LIGHTING FIXTURE WITH ADJUSTABLE MOUNT Harold A. Bacon, Stockton, Calif., assignor to Electric Lighting, Inc., Stockton, Calif., a corporation of California Application August 25,1955, Serial No. 530,553
2. Claims. (Cl. 240-3) This invention relates in general to an improvement in outdoor lighting fixtures, and particularly to the type wherein an elongated fixture is supported above-ground by spaced posts; one example of suchan arrangement being those fixtures-for service station 1ightingwhich are post-supported a distance above the gasoline pumps.
In erecting such a lighting, fixture the spaced posts are first secured at their lower ends in the ground, or the island for the gasoline pumps, and then the fixture is attached to the posts by mounting units having sockets adapted to receive the upper ends of said posts. Heretofore, however, the mounting units occupied a fixed position on the fixture, and any slight mis-spacing of the posts prevented them from engaging in the related sockets of said units.
It is therefore the major object of this invention to provide an outdoor lighting fixture, of the type described, wherein the mounting units are adjustable relative to each other lengthwise of the fixture; the advantage being that said mounting units can be so adjusted to compensate for any mis-spacing of the posts, and whereby the same can be readily engaged in the sockets of said units.
Another important object of the present invention is to construct such mounting units so that the adjustment thereof can be readily and conveniently accomplished in the field.
It is also an object of the invention to provide adjustable mounting units, for an outdoor lighting fixture, which are designed for ease and economy of manufacture, and ready embodiment in the fixture assembly.
Still another object of the invention is to provide practical, reliable, and durable adjustable mounting units for an outdoor lighting fixture, and ones which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which they are designed.
These objects are accomplished by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an erected outdoor lighting fixture embodying the novel adjustable mounting units; the posts being shown foreshortened.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse vertical section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, the elongated, above-ground fixture is indicated generally at 1, such fixture being supported by spaced, vertically disposed posts 2 which are secured at their lower ends, either in the ground or in a base or island 3. The fixture 1 spans between, and is attached to, the upper ends of the posts 2 by corresponding mounting units, each of which is indicated generally at 4.
The fixture 1 includes a horizontal, elongated reflector hood 5, whichin transverse section-is generally concave on the under side; there being a central longitudinal box 6 disposed in the hood and extending substantially the fulllength thereof; such box including a top 7 on which the related portion of the hood 5 bears, sides 8, and initially detached bottom covers 9.
The sides 8 are formed, along their lower edges, with inturned flanges 10, and eachmounting unit 4 includes a horizontal, rectangular attachment plate 11 which spans between, and bears against, the flanges 10 from the under side. A downwardly opening or depend-ing socket 12 is carried by each attachment plate 11 and receives the upper end of the related post 2.
Each. post 2 and socket 12 are normally maintained '10 and are secured to the inner face of the sides 8 by means of bolts 15; the channels 14 being disposed in the Zone of the related mounting unit 4 and being of a length to permit of a considerable range of adjustment of said unit lengthwise of the fixture in one direction or the other.
A rectangular backing plate 16 is disposed in the box 6, with the opposed longitudinal edge portions of said plate engaging in corresponding channels 14, and in initially slidable relation.
In this manner the mounting units 4 of the fixture 1 can be readily set in the field for matching engagement with the posts 2, although the latter may have some misspacing over that which was originally specified.
After the mounting units 4 are so adjusted and secured to the posts 2, the initially open bottom of the box 6 is closed by the bottom covers 9. Such covers 9 include, at their opposed, longitudinal edges, upstanding flanges 18 which engage externally on the sides 8. The bottom covers 9 are cut to length on the job and after the mounting units 4 are adjusted to position; the attachment plates 11 being transversely notched at opposite ends, as at H, for the receptionin supporting relation-of the adjacent ends of said bottom covers. At other points the bottom covers 9 are secured to the box 6 by any suitable means.
The lighting instrumentalities, here longitudinal fluorescent tubes 20, are suitably secured in the fixture, by means including transverse socket plates 21, on opposite sides of the box 6, as shown in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that there has been produced such a device as will substantially fulfill the objects of the invention, as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, the following is claimed as new and useful, and upon which Letters Patent are desired:
1. In an outdoor lighting fixture which includes a supporting post, an elongated lighting assembly above the post and including a longitudinally extending openbottomed box, means to mount the assembly on the post including a horizontalattachment plate secured on top of the post and bearing against the sides of the box along the lower edges thereof, means to releasably clamp the plate to the box, the plate closing the adjacent portion of the bottom of the box,.removable cover plates for the remaining areas of the bottom of the box; each cover plate extending along the box from one end of the attachment plate and engaging the sides of the box along the lower edges thereof, and upstanding stiffening flanges along the side edges of the cover plate lapping the sides of the box; the adjacent end of the attachment plate being transversely notched across its upper surface to receive the corresponding end of the cover plate in supporting relation.
2. In an outdoor lighting fixture which includes a supporting post, an elongated lighting assembly above the post and including a longitudinally extending openbottomed box, said box including flanges projecting laterally inward from the lower edges of the sides thereof, laterally inwardly opening rigid channels secured in the box above and engaging the flanges, a rectangular horizontal attachment plate slidably engaging the flanges on their under side, the channels extending beyond both ends of the plate some distance, a downwardly opening socket rigid with and depending from the plate to removably engage over the upper end of the post with a straight downward movement, a backing plate supported in the channels for sliding movement lengthwise therein, and a plurality of removable bolts connecting the plates to draw the same together; the bolts being disposed for operation from below and arranged clear of the post and of the flanges and channels.
