STOVE PIPE THIMBLE.
No. 280,880. Patented July 10, 1883.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD S. SWVEETSER, OF WAKEFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
STOVE-PIPE THIMBLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,880, dated July 10, 1883. Application filed April 9, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern Be itknown that I, EDWARD S. SwnnTsnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wakefield, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a newand useful Stove-Pipe Thimble, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The plastering about stove-pipe 'thimbles, as ordinarily made and set, is apt to crack, especially in houses newly built. This results from joining a thimble which is of one rigid piece to both the plastering and the chimney-wall. A slight movement of plastering or ohimney-wall, one with reference to the other, consequent upon the unequal settling of the frame of the house, to which the laths and plastering thereon are attached, and the chimney, brings a stress on'the plastering about the thimble and causes the plastering to break. g
It is the object of my invention to prevent such breaking of the plastering by having the thimble of two parts, one part fastened to the plastering and the other part inserted fixedly in the chimney-wall, the parts being movable, one with reference to the other.
My invention consists in a stove-pipe thimble of two parts movable with reference to each other, one part fastened to the plastering and the other part to the chimney-wall; and it also consists in the special construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the thimble, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear view of a stove-pipe thimble embodying my'inven tion. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 1 1, and Fig. 3 a section taken on line 2 2 in Fig. 1. In Figs. 2 and 3 sections of portions of plastering and chimney-wallare shown.
A piece of sheet metal or a flange, A,.is adapted to be fastened, asby nails at a, to
' laths or studs 2). About and on the front surface of the flange A the plaster B is laid, there being openings 0 in the flange, if necessary, to aid in holding the plaster thereon.
To the flange A is secured a plate, 3, which is formed to provide, or has fastened thereto, Ways or guide pieces d, which are adapted to retain a plate, D, close to but so as to slide on the plate 0. y In the plate 0 is a tube or pipe,
E, as shown. The flange A and plate 0 may be cast or formed as one piece. The tube E may be slid endwise in the plate 0, to adapt that end which extends to the front to the thickness of the plastering on the flange A. To the plate D is fastened a larger tube or pipe, F,which may be oblong in cross-section, as shown. The plate D and tube F may be also cast or formed as one piece. The interior tube, E, is thus secured in the plastering and held by the laths or studs of the house frame. The exterior tube, F, is to be fixed in the chimney-wall G, as shown, and, with the plate D, may have a movement with reference to the tube E in a vertical direction, the plate D being held to, so as to slide on, the plate 0, as stated above.
By my construction and adaptation of thimble, if the chimney or plastering has a movement one with reference to the other, it will carrythat part of the thimble fixed thereto, and the other part will not be moved thereby; hence there will be no strain on the plastering and no breaking thereof, such as results from the employment of the common thimble.
I claim as my invention- 1. A stove-pipe thimble of two parts, one part adapted to be fastened to the plastering and the other part to be fixed in the chimneywall, one part smaller and extending into the other part in such a manner that either pari may have a movement with reference to the other part in a vertical direction, or in a direction transverse to the thimble, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of plate 0, adapted tc be fixed to the studs, laths, or plastering, plate D, connected to plate 6, so as to have a sliding movement thereon, tube E, fixed to the platr O, and a larger tube, F, fixed to the plate D, and surrounding the tube E, substantially a& set forth.
3. The combination of flange A, adapted f0] holding the plaster thereon, and fixed to plat C, plate 0, tube E, fixed to plate 0, and extending within the tube F, and tube F, fixed to th plate D, substantially as specified.
EDW. DUMMER, J osnrn SELTG.
