UNITED STATES PATENT ()rricti.
ARTHUR E. \VHITNEY, VIN CHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
MACHINE FOR UNHAIRING, SCOURING, AND FLESHING HIDES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 280,698, dated July 3, 1883,
(No model.)
Skins, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a a specification.
My invention relates to that class of unhairing and scouring machines in which the hide or's'kin is passed between pressure feed-rolls,
and between a bed-roll and a cylinder pro vi ded with a series of radiating blades, the edges of which act upon the hide or skin to remove the hair or rub and scour the surface; and one portion of my invention is especially applicable to that class of such machines in which the bladed cylinder co-operates with a pressure bed-roll to remove the hairfronrthe hide or skin and rub or scour the same, said pressure bed-roll also serving as one of the pair of feed-rolls, the whole being so arranged that the hide or skin passes between said bed roll and the feed-roll in a horizontal or nearly horizontal direction, is'passed partially around said bed-roll and between it and the knife-cylinder in a downward or nearly vertical direction; and it consists in a novel arrangmentof devices for moving the feedroll away from the bed-roll simultaneously with a similar move ment of the bed-roll away from the bladed or knife cylinder.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line 00 w on Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a partial vertical transverse Section on line y y on Fig. 1.
A A are the end frames of the machine, con nected together by the tiegirts B B, and having mounted in fixed bearings thereon the cylinder O, which has cast thereon a series of spiral radiating ribs, (0 a, and also having fitted to suitable housings therein the movable boxes I; b and c c. The boxes I) b are arranged in horizontal slots or housings, and have mounted therein the bed-roll D, provided with a covering of rubber or other elastic material, said'bed-roll having its axis in the same horizontal plane as the axis of the cylinder 0, toward which it is pressed by two springs, d, only one of which is shown in the drawings,
the tension of said springs (Z being regulated by means of the set-screws E in a well-known manner. The boxes 0 c are fitted to move vertically in slots 0 c, and have mounted therein the feed roll F, pressed downward by two springs, e 6, only one of which is shown in the drawings, into contact with the upper side of the bed-roll D, the tension of the springs e 6 being regulated by the set-screws F in a wellknown manner.
Motion is imparted to the cylinder 0 by means of the driving-pulley G and a suitable belt, (not shown,) and motion is imparted to the bed-roll and feed-roll by means of the belt H and suitable pulleys and gears in a wellknown manner.
I I are steel blades bent or otherwise fitted to conform'to the sides of the ribs a a, and secured thereto by screws, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; or they may be riveted thereon.-
It often happens, in working hides or skins by machinery, that, owing to some inequality in the thickness of the skin, or from other causes, it becomes necessary to change the position of the skin in the machine, to do which it is necessary to lift the feed-roll, or, in other words, to separate the two pressure-rolls which feed the skin through the machine, which, if done, stops the feed of the skin, and if the knife-cylinder continues to revolve in contact with the skin, if only for an instant, it is very likely to injure it by burning or heating it. To avoid this I apply to the machine two levers, J J, pivoted one to the inside of each frame A, and connected together at their front ends by the treadle-board J, as shown in Fig. 1. These levers J engage at their rear ends with the lower ends of two vertical rods or bars, K, (only one of which is shown in the drawings,) the upper ends of which are so arranged and shaped that the boxes 0 0 rest thereon, and may be moved upward thereby.
The rods or bars Kare guided at their up per ends in bearings L, and are each provided with a lug or pin, f, projecting therefrom, which engages with the under side of the horizontal arm of the elbow-lever M, pivoted at. g to the frame A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The arm h of the lever M projects upward from its pivotal connection in position to bear. against the inner end of the box I), as shown in Fig. 3. If, now, the operators foot is placed upon the treadlcboard J to depress the levers J J, the rods K will be moved upward, carrying therewith the boxes 0 c, and consequently the feed-roll F, mounted therein, and thus removing said feed-roll from contact with the ski 11, which rests upon and is partially wrapped around the roll D. The same upward move ment of the rods K causes a movement of the elbow-levers M about their pivots g in the direction indicated by the arrow, and the arms h of said levers impinging upon the boxes 0 0 move them, and with them the bed-roll D, mounted therein, away from the knife-cylinder, leaving the hide or skin free to be adjusted at will without danger of injury from the kni t'e-cylinder.
W hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In combination with the cylinder 0, bed-roll D, and feed-roll F, arranged relative to each other, as set forth, the treadle J J, the rods K, provided with lugs or pins f, the elbow-levers M, and the boxes I) b and c c, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes described.
Intestimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 5th day of February, A. D. 1883.
