This invention relates to a bottle opener andhas for its primary object to facilitate removal of the conventional crown cap from a bottle. t

Referring to the drawings in detail, a bottle carrying carton designated generally is provided with parallel rows of bottle receiving cells 12 which are separated by a central partition from the upper edge of which extends a carton carrying handle 14. conventionally, the handle 14 and central partition are produced by folding a sheet of cardboard upon itself to form layers 16 and 18 between which is received the tongue designated generally 20 of an abutment designated generally 22. The
r beneath the crimped edge of tongue 20 comprises a strip of metal folded upon itself, as illustrated in Figure 4, with opposite ends turned back to defineflanges 24 which, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, engage opposite outer sides of the handle 14. The bights defined between the adjacent portions of the tongue 20 which, as illustrated in Figure 2, overlies the adjacent end edges of the folds 16 and 18 of the handle and cooperate to define an abutment having a recess 26 opening through the side thereof remote from the tongue 20. In the preferred form of the invention, a tongue 20 is clamped as at 28 to assist in retaining the abutment 22 in proper position against the end of the handle 14, as will be readily understood upon reference to the drawrugs.
A bottle cap lifter designated generally 30 is provided with an opening 32 which defines with one horizontal edge of the bottle cap lifter and handle 34, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear. A lug 36 is carried 'by the bottle cap lifter 30 and extends angularly therefrom toward the anvil 34 to define a pry for engaging a bottle cap which, upon rocking movement of a bottle to which it is attached, is pressed against the anvil 34 and lifted from the bottle. Legs 38 are carried by opposite side edges of the bottle cap lifter 30 and are provided with longitudinally spaced s openings 40 through which are projected prongs 42 and f Other features include a recess extending into the abut- 44 which are clinched as at 46 to clamp the legs 38 against opposite sides of the handle 14 to securely hold the bottle cap lifter on the handle,as will be readily understood upon reference to Figure 2. The ends of the legs 38 remote from the bottle cap lifter 30are provided with prongs 48 which, as illustrated in Figure 2, penetrate the layers 16 and 18 of the handle 14 to anchor the ends of the legs 38 remote from the bottle cap lifter to the handle. As illustrated in Figure 2, the prong 42 is projected through an opening 50 which extends through the tongue 20 so as to securely lock the tongue to the legs 38.
With the .bottle opener mounted on the handle 14 of the carton 10, as illustrated in the drawings, it will be I evident that when it is desired to remove the bottle cap from a bottle, the bottle is extracted from its respective cell 12 and the crimped edge of the cap is placed between the tongue 36 and the anvil 34 so that upon rocking the bottle to advance the cap toward the anvil 34,
'the cap will be pried loose from the bottle through its engagement with the lug or pry 36. Dbviously, when the tongue 20 disposed between the opposite . side portions 16 and 18 of the handle 14 and the flanges 24 partially embracing the end edges of the folds 16 and 18, a firm abutment will be produced against which the anvil 34 will seat so that the bottle cap during the end edge of the handle 14.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A bottle opener adapted to be attached to a bottle carrying carton of the type having a handle extending upwardly above and between rows of bottle receiving cells, said bottle opener comprising an abutment carried by the handle and extending horizontally across one end thereof above the cells, a bottle cap lifter carried by the handle and extending across the end thereof in engagement with the abutment, said lifter having an opening extending therethrough which defines in conjunction with a horizontal edge of the lifter an anvil against which a bottle cap is pressed during its removal from a bottle, and
pressure exerted thereon by a the prying effort will be transmitted to a lug carried by the bottle cap-lifter and extending angularly therefrom in the direction of the anvil to define .a pry for engaging a bottle cap and disengaging it from a bottle as said bottle is rocked-toward the anvil.
