Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
WALTER M. JACKSON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
LUBRICANT FOR THE COCKS AND VALVES OF GAS APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,625, dated July 3, 1883. Application filed June 5,1882, (No specimens.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VALTER M. J AOKSON, of Providence, in the county of Providence, and in the State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricants for the Cocks and Valves of Gas Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention has for its objects to provide an improved lubricant for the cocks and valves of all descriptions of gas apparatus, hydrocarbon holders or tanks, or other apparatus for holding, conducting, or manipulating gas or liquid hydrocarbons.
Heretofore great difficulty has been experienced in the use of the ordinary oily or fatty lubricants for the above-mentioned purposes, for the reason that such are not impervious to gas and permit leakage, and are readily soluble in the liquid hydrocarbons, so that they are rapidly washed out when thus employed.
By my present invention I provide a lubricant that will be totally unaffected by gas or liquid hydrocarbons, and which will be totally insolubE in such liquid hydrocarbons, where by the above-enumerated objections are wholly obviated. f
My improved lubricant consists of a composition of glycerine and gelatine combined in 0 suitable proportions. For general purposes I have found that a mixture of about twenty four parts of glycerine to one of gelatine answers well but the proportions may be varied, according to the purposes for which the lubri- 3 5 cant is to be used, (that is to say, for heavy or light machinery,)- without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In preparing my improved lubricant the gelatine may be dissolved directly in the glyc- 4o erine by the aid of a sand bath.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A lubricant for gas apparatus, hydrocar- 5 bon-holders, and other similar apparatus, the same consisting of glycerine and gelatine, in about the proportions substantially as specifled.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in 50 presence of two witnesses, this 27th day of May, 1882.
WALTER MARSH JACKSON.
