Description

, NTE
n'r union- SYLVES'IER MUNSON, OF DILLON, ILLINOIS.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING SHINGLES.
To all whom z' may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLvnsTER MUNsoN, of Dillon, Tazewell county, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Cutting Shingles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nat-ure of my invention consists in the construction of two gages united by a joint in the middle andplaced directly below the knife. The gages are set angling to present two oblique surfaces, to give the shingle a wedged shape and determine its thickness.
To enable others skilled in `the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct an upright frame#A-about i live feet high and two feet wide on the inside, by two posts with cap and two sills, the sills joined by two girths to holdthe frame secure. I then construct a sliding frame as sash B-not unlike a commonsaw gate for a saw -mill two feet two inches wide and three feet long, which is placed in the inside of the upright frame, a rabbet mS-being out to receive the sash. I secure the sash in the rabbets by four hooks c c c o-which are let through the posts and fastened by wedges on the backside that the sash may slide up and down. On the face of this sliding frame I place the knife -D- in an oblique direct-ion across the frame, and let it in the frame the thickness of the knife so that the face of the knife comes even with the sash. The ends of the knife are secured to the sash by bolts E E E E. On the backside of the sash and below the knife I place two cross bars I?, F, five inches apart and secured at the ends to the sash B by bolts and screws, and to these cross bars I secure by four iron straps G, G, G, G, with bolts and screws the two gages I-I, II, forming a part of the sliding frame. In the center of the upper cross bar F, I have a thumb screw I-by which I preserve the angle of the. gages and give the shingle its taper. The straps G, G, G, G, are also made to move back or forward anc set by thebolts4 and screws the gages to anythiokness intended. Directly in front of the sliding frame and about in the center of the upright frame, I construct apt-able about twelve inches wide secured to the upright frame and making a part of the same on which I place my blocks after having been boiled or steamed for cutting. The blockI is then placed against one of the gages, the knife as it descends cuts a shingle, the block is vibrated against the other gage as the knife returns cutting alternately a shingle against the right hand gage then the left.
This machine may be operated by` hand or other power. Y
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the two gages when united `by a joint or joints in themiddle and provided with the means of setting them, with the knife, soft-hat by the shifting of the bolt from side to side the shingles are cut tapering as herein described.
