UNITED STATES PATENT IQFFICE.
JOHN H. BAVDEN, OF FREEHOLD, NEW JERSEY.
MOLDlNG-FLASK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,557, dated July 3, 1883.
1 Application filed May 24,1883. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BAWDEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Freehold, Monmouth county, New Jersey,'have invented certain Improvements in Molding- Flasks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of certain improvements in 1nolding-flasks, my invention consisting, mainly, of a plate or bar forming part of the upper portion or cope, or of the mid dle portion or cheek of the flask, and constructed to hold the sand in proper form, substanti ally in the manner described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of part of a molding-flask illustrating my invention, the upper portion or cope of theflask being elevated above the lower portion; Fig. 2, a general plan view, drawn to a reduced scale, of the said cope; Fig. 3, a perspective view of part of one of the cross bars or plates of the cope, and Fig. 4 an enlarged perspective view of part of the said plate. I
My invention is of general applicability in molding wherever the sand in thecope or cheek has prominent projections, forming cores for the mold, and terminating in compara tively sharp edges.
I have selected for illustration a mold the mass of sand B in whichhas deep and tapering indentations or recesses formed by packing the said sand against a pattern, A, having deep tapering recesses a, into which the sand D of the upper portion or cope of the flask is packed, and from which the projecting masses of sand have to be withdrawn with the cope when the latter is elevated prior to the removal of the pattern. In other words, the projections or ribs 6 are the cores of the mold, and these cores are carried by the cope.
It has been the practice in such cases as I have explained to use gaggers for maintaining the integrity of projecting tender cores in molding. These gaggers, which are simple strips of metal, with bent or T ends, are embedded in the sand to keep it together, the gaggers being sometimes passed over the bars of the cope, at their upper ends, so as to support the cores in which they are embedded.
In preparing a mold of the character shown, or any other mold in which there are deep re cesses in one part of the flask and projecting cores on the other part, I combine with the cope or other part of the flask one or more plates or bars, G, in which are numerous perforations, m, and at the edge dovetailed recesses f. Thus, in preparing the mold, Fig. 1, thereis one of these plates Gr wherever a projectingrib or core 12 occurs, the plate extending downward into the recesses of the pattern, so that on packing the sand the latter will enter the perforations and the dovetailed recesses; hence on elevating the cope there will be complete and compact cores, each being composed of part of one of the plates, and sand clinging to both sides, owing to the perforations, and to the lower edge, owing to the dovetailed recesses. If the core has to terminate in a comparatively sharp lower edge, as in the present instance, I bevel the lower edge of the plate in the manner best observed in Fig. 4. In the present case, the lower edges of the plates are straight; but the shape of each plate will depend upon the requirements of the cores, of which many different forms are used in molding, it being advisable to form the dovetailed recesses around the entire edge of that part of the plate which is embedded in the sand.
The plates or bars may in some flasks be carried by the middle section or check, instead of by the cope; or both cope and cheek may be furnished with said plates. In the present instance the cope has but three plates G, as shown in the plan view, Fig. 2; but there are cases in which a single plate only will be required, or in which more than three may be necessary.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with a molding-flask, of a plate or bar having dovetailed rccessesf at the edge, substantially as set forth.
2. A molding-flask plate or bar beveled at its edge and having dovetailed recesses at the said beveled edge, substantially as described.
3. A perforated molding-flask plate or bar having dovetailed recesses at its edge, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. BAVDEN.
