1 Qlnim. (CI. 55-30) My invention relates broadly to folding lift-type disc harrows and more particularly to a composite handle device and scraper for such barrows.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a composite construction of fitting for folding lift-type disc harrows constituting a handle device for facilitating the movement of such barrows into folding position and also as a scraper for the harrow discs.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a construction of fitting for folding lift-type disc harrows which may be readily fabricated from tubular, solid and flat strip stock into a composite unit attachable to the front and rear frames of a folding lift-type disc harrow for facilitating the folding operation of the sections of the harrow and providing means for scraping accumulations of earth from the harrow discs as the disc gangs revolve.
Other and further objects of my invention reside in the novel construction of fitting attachable to a folding lifttype disc harrow, as set forth more fully in the specification hereinafter following, by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the handle devices and scrapers of my invention applied to a disc harrow of a front and rear folding frame type where there are a pair of independently foldable rear frames coacting with a single front frame;
Fig. 2 is another perspective view illustrating the harrow of Fig. 1 and the composite handle devices and scrapers associated therewith where one of the rear foldable harrow sections has been elevated and folded over the front section;
Fig. 3 is an end view of the harrow illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 and shown in perspective view, and illustrating the manner in which the composite handle device and scraper is employed in elevating and folding over the rear harrow sections with respect to the front harrow section;
Fig. 4 is an elevational view partially broken away and illustrated in section, showing one of the composite handle devices and scrapers for the harrow units and showing certain of the pins foreshortened;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical sectional View taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
My invention is directed to a construction of fitting attachable to the front and rear frames of a folding lifttype disc harrow of the kind set forth in my co-pending applications Serially Numbered 35,805, filed June 29, 1948, for Multiple Lift-Type Disc Harrow, now Patent 2,646,657, dated July 28, 1953, and 162,764, filed May 18, 1950, for Multiple Lift-Type Disc Harrow, now Patent 2,640,307, dated June 2, 1953. The folding lift-type disc harrows of the aforesaid applications include a front frame structure and a hingedly connected rear frame structure constituted by a pair of separate sections hingedly connected to the front frame structure. The front and rear frame structures carry gangs of rotatable discs which are journaled below the frame structures. The composite fittings of my invention connect to the upper portions of the frame structures and comprise lineally extending tubular members disposed in substantially parallel spaced relation to the axes of the gangs 'of discs supported below the frame structures and provided with downwardly depending pins extending adjacent the surfaces of the harrow discs and serving as scrapers for removing accumulated dirt which may adhere to the harrow discs during the operation thereof. The fittings constitute handles for facilitating the transportation of the harrow and the raising of the separate rear sections to folded positions over the front section. The fitting is readily constructed from tubular stock such as pipe supported at opposite ends by vertically extending struts formed from flat strip stock and having downwardly depending pins formed from solid stock and extending through diametrically opposite apertures in the tubular stock and projecting between the discs of the rotatable disc gang assembly and serving to clear accumulations of dirt away from the discs during operation thereof.
Referring to the drawings in more detail, reference character 1 designatesthe front frame section of the foldable lift type disc harrow of my invention with which the independently foldable rear frame sections 2 and 3 coact. The front frame section 1 is provided on its trailing edge with vertically extending sets of spaced plates which form parts of hinges designated 4, 5, 6 and 7. Intermediate the sets of spaced plates 4, 5, 6 and 7, and secured to sections 2 and 3, there extend coacting plates which I have designated at 6a and 7a, for example, secured to the leading edge of the rear frame foldable section 2 and which are pivotally connected with the associated sets of plates 6 and 7 by bolt members such as 6b and 7b. The rear frame sections 2 and 3 are thus angularly movable from the horizontal position illustrated in Fig. l coplanar with the front frame 1 to a position where the rear frame sections are located over the front frame section as represented for example in Figs. 2 and 3 where rear frame section 3 is moved to a position superposed over front frame section 1.
The rear frame sections 2 and 3 are maintained in coplanar relation to the front frame section 1 by an arrangement of depending lugs illustrated at 8, 9 and 10 secured to the underside of the trailing edge of from frame section 1. The leading edges of the independently foldable rear frame sections 2 and 3 are maintained in coplanar relation with front frame section 1 by means of bolt members represented for example at 11, 12 and 13 projectable between the coacting set of spaced depending lugs 8, 9 and 10. Such bolts are secured in position by nuts which bind against the front edges of the sets of depending lugs 8, 9 and 10. Upon detachment of the bolts represented at 11, 12 and 13, the foldable rear frame section 2 or 3 may be released for angular movement to a position over the front frame section 1.
A frame 14 for connecting the harrow to a tractor is provided at the leading edge of front frame section 1 and appropriate adjustment means 15 are provided for raising or lowering the harrow with respect to the frame 14.
The front frame section 1 carries gangs of rotatable harrow discs 16 and 17 while foldable rear section 2 carries the rotatable gang of discs 19 and foldable rear frame section 3 carries the rotatable gang of discs 18. These rotatable gangs of discs are disposed on axes forming an obtuse angle whenviewed from the front frame section and from the rear of the rear of the rear frame sections.

the lower aperture 21a and are projected upwardly and scraper is illustrated more clearly in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, and for purposes of explaining my invention I will designate this particular handle device and scraper by reference character 21, although it will be understood that all of the devices 22, 23 and 24 are similar to the device '21. The composite handle and scraper assembly consists of a tubular handle device 21 supported at opposite ends in vertically disposed standards 21a and 21b, constituted by flat plates bolted to transverse portions of the frame 1 for elevating handle device 21 sufliciently above the plane of front frame section 1 to enable the handle device 21 to be used as a-hand grip'for more readily raising and transporting the harrow. The handle device formed by tubular member 21 is diametrically aperturedin spaced vertical positions intermediate the length thereof as more clearly shown in Fig. 6 at 21c and 21d for the passage of de- 7 The pins 21e pass through through aperture 210 and are welded in position as represented'at 21 and 21g. The pins 21e project downwardly between the discs, such as 16, for example, and in a plane which is coincident with the plane of the axis of the disc gang assembly 16. The pins 16s terminate immediately above the rotatable hub portions of the adjustable discs and operate to scrape mud or clods of dirt or other accumulation off of the disc gang assembly as the discs revolve. Thus, the composite devices 2124 operate both as handles and as scrapers. The tubular members 2122 extend at obtuse angles with respect to each other when viewed from the front of the harrow. The handle devices 2423 extend at obtuse angles with respect to each other when viewed from the front of the harrow. The handle devices 2423 extend at obtuse angles with respect to each other when viewed from the rear of the rear frame sections 2 and 3 in line with the, axes of the gangs of discs.
The rear frame sections 2 and 3 terminate in flat abutting faces represented at 2a and 3a in Fig. 1 through which detachable bolt 25 extends when normally securing the rear frame sections 2 and 3 in coplanar relation to the front frame section 1. However, upon removal of bolt 25 either rear frame section 2 or 3 may be independently raised by grasping handle device 24 or 23 and moving rear frame sections 2 or 3 about the hinges 67, or moving rear frame section 3 about the hinges 4 and 5 to positions over front frame section 1, as indicated for example by the movement of rear frame section 3, to folded position as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The mass of the individual rear frame sections 2 and 3 is such that the provision of the handle devices 24 and 23 greatly facilitates the ease and convenience of eifecting a folding Cir operation. Moreover, when the entire harrow must be transported the handle devices such as 21 and 22 greatly facilitate the ease of manually raising and transporting the harrow. The pins shown at 21e, 22e, 23e and 242 serve to effectively scrape adjacent faces of the rotatable discs throughout the operation thereof.
While I have described my invention in certain of its preferred embodiments, I realize that modifications may be made and I desire that it be understood that no limitations upon my invention are intended other than may be imposed by the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
' edge of said front frame structure with said lineally ex- 7 A folding lift-type disc harrow including a front frame structure and a rear frame structure, where the front edge of said rear frame structure is hingedly connected with the trailing edge of said front frame structure, gangs of discs supported by each of said frame structures, manual grips carried by each of said frame structures, said manual grips each comprising a lineally extending member, means for supporting said member above the plane of each ofsaid frame structures substantially in vertical alignment with the axes of the gangs of discs supported beneath said frame structures, said lineally extending members each being disposed on angularly disposed axes directed toward each other, said members forming an obtuse angle when viewed from the front of said front frame structure and from the rear of said rear frame structure and constituting hand grips for facilitating the movement of the rear frame structure over the front frame structure on axes substantially coincident with the front edge of said rear frame structure and the trailing tending members disposed adjacent each other when said rear frame structure is folded over said front frame struc- V ture and means projecting downwardly from said members on axes coplanar with a vertical plane extending through said members and extending between the disks of each gang in spaced relation thereto for scraping accumulateddirt from said discs.
