WITNESSES: INVBNTOR m Mk f BY JZ 0 ATTORNEYS.
UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
wArsoN F. HAMMOND, or MASHPEE, MASSACHUSETTS-- CRANBERRY-SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,372, dated July 3, 1883.
Application filed October 13, 1882. (No model.)
. .To all whom it may concern:
My invention consists of a hopper, platform, screen-grate, discharging-spout, and feeding contrivances, constructed and arranged, as hereinafter described and claimed, to facilitate the screening of cranberries preparatory to packing them in barrels for market, all as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is aperspective view of a cranberry screen constructed inaccordance with my i1nprovements. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation through the hopper and screen. Fig. 3 is a detail in side elevation. Fig. 4 is a detail of the jarring device employed to aid in feeding the cranberries, the same being in horizontal section of part of the hopper.
I make a hopper, a, to contain the berries to be screened, the said hopper having aslanting bottom, I), with a drop-gate, c, below the bottom, forallowing the berries to escape; and over the falling edge of the gate is a sliding board, d, to be employed for jarring the hopper to cause the berries to run out in batches, as wanted from time to time. The gate 0 is hinged to the bottom I) at e, and is fastened up to the jar d by a strap or hasp, f, and pin 9 when the hopper is to be closed. Theboard d is fixed in slots 2' of the end boards, j, of the hopper, to slide forward and backward therein, and has a spring, is, to thrust it forward and cause a jar by the cleat Z, attached to it, striking the end of the hopper after the board has been pulled back by the finger of the a tendant applied to the cleat m.
The. screen-grate'n is located in the base or platform 0 of the machine, in advance of the hopper, suitably for the batches of berries to .be spread out over it by the attendant for screening them preparatory to shoving them off through the spout p q into the barrel or other receptacle for them. The end section,
q, of the spout-bottom is provided with flange q, and is jointed to the rest at s, so that it can be turned over upon the part 1), next to the-screen, for a stop to prevent berries and other matters from escaping before they are sufliciently screened, said section being turned up, as in Fig. 2, when serving to stop the escape, and down, as in Fig. 1, to allow the escape of the berries.
For enabling thehopper to be taken off of the platform to be filled, it is detachably connected thereto by means of the grooved cleats t, attached to the edges of the platform, and cleats u, attached to the ends of the hopper, enabling the hopper to be readily connected and disconnected by sliding out and in the grooves of cleats t from the back of the platform.
Theplatform 0 is designed to be set up on any suitable support at the back, with the spout end resting on the top of the barrel, box, or other receptacle for the berries, so that they will discharge from the spout into said receptacle.
The hopper hascleats w, attached to the upper edges of the ends j, for handles, by which to lift it when removing it from the platform to be filled and replacing it again, and when so filled and in position the strap or hasp f is lifted from pin g and the hinged bottom 0 opened, whereupon the jar cl may be operated, as above described, to cause amoderate amount of berries to fall from the hopper at each movement of the jar (Z upon the screen a, to be assorted and discharged.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the platform 0 and grate a, of the hopper a, provided with dropgate 0 and the j arrin g-board (Z, substantially as described.
2. The grate a, provided with the spoutp g, the part q being provided with the flange q and hinged to the part p,'andadapted to be turned over upon said part p to form a stop, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of hopper 0, having drop-gate c and jarring-board d, with the platform 0 and grate u, said hopper and platform being detachably connected together, substantially as described.
4. The sliding board (I, having cleats Z and I jarring-board substantially as herein shown an and spring 70, in combination with hopper a and described. and grate n, substantially as described. u
5. The combination with the hopper a, hav- 5 ing a slanting bottom b, and the jarring-board Vitnesses:
LYSANDER B. GoDFRnY, FRED. D. JONAS.
WATSON F. HAMMOND.
(Z, of the drop-gate a, hinged to the slanting bottom and held against the lower edge of said
