United States atent 2,802,677 Patented Aug. 13, 1957 ice 2,802,677 PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM Gordon J. Forsyth, Provo, Utah Application August 19, 1955, Serial No. 529,475 8 Claims. (Cl. 281-16) This invention comprises novel and useful improvements in a photograph album and more specifically relates to a composite albumconsisting of a plurality of detachable folio sections of an improved construction.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a composite photograph album formed of a plurality of detachable folio sections each of which has a plurality of detachable photograph carrying leaves.
A further object of the invention is to provide a composite photograph album in accordance with the preceding object together with novel means for facilitating the secure combining of a plurality of folio sections together in any desired sequence or arrangement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a photograph album in compliance with the above mentioned objects and which shall have novel and advantageous means for facilitating the detachable connection of a plurality of folio sections together.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a composite photograph album consisting of a plurality of detachable folio sections whereby the user may readily group different collections of photographs therein.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and opera-tion as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved composite photograph album showing a plurality of folio sections secured thereto;
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 22 of Figure l, the view being taken upon an enlarged scale and parts being broken away;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the removable leaves of a folio section of the album, a portion of the same being broken away to show the mounting of a photograph therein;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in horizontal section through a portion of one of the folio sections and showing inparticular the construction of the latch means and the mechanism for operating the same whereby the folio sections may be detachably connected together to form the composite album;
Figure 5 is a detailed view taken in vertical section substantially upon the plane indicated by section line 55 of Figure 4 showing more clearly further details of the latch means for the folio sections;
Figure 6 is a vertical transverse sectional view in detail taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 6-6 of Figure 4 and showing the latch releasing mechanism of the album;
Figure 7 is a detail view in vertical section through a portion of ,one of the folios showing the means therein for detachably securing the album leaves in place;
Figure 8 is an enlarged detail view in vertical section, taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 88 of Figure 7;and
Figure 9 is a detail viewin perspective of the latch elease slide of the invention.
In Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings, there is shown as an exemplification of the principles of the invention, a composite photograph album indicated generally by the numeral 10 and which consists of a plurality of folio sections 12 which are detachably connected together to form the composite album.
Referring more particularly to Figure 2 it will be seen that each of the folio sections 12 consists of a rigid box portion having an end wall 14 together with front and rear panels 16 and 17. Hingedly connected to the front panel 16 in any desired manner for pivoting movement relative thereto is a substantially rigid front cover 18, while a rear cover 20 which may be of a pliable material is similarly carried by the rear panel 17. Each of the folio sections includes between the front and rear covers 18 and 21 a plurality of releasably mounted leaves 22. Each leaf conveniently consists of a transparent casing or envelope as shown in Figure 3, the same comprising transparent walls 24 and 26 which may be integrally or otherwise secured together to form a pocket for removably receiving therebetween a sheet of material 28 upon which may be mounted a photograph or similar material 30. The material 28 and the transparent envelope are provided with perforations 32 along one edge by means of which the leaves are releasably secured in their respective folio sections.
Referring now particularly to Figures 2, 7 and 8 it will be seen that the rigid box portions are each provided with an arcuate pivoted resilient ring assembly for releasably securing the leaves 22. Thus, the front panel 16 adjacent its hinged connection with the front cover 18 is provided with a plurality of hinges 34 to which is pivotally connected the upper portion of a ring assembly 36. The latter includes a plurality of downwardly curving resilient fingers 38 which are adapted to resiliently press against the rear panel 17 and which fingers are adapted to be flexed when the ring assembly is pivoted upwardly and the front cover 18 is raised, to permit the leaves 22 to be threaded upon or removed from the ring assembly. Thus the ring assembly will resiliently retain the leaves thereon as indicated in Figures 2 and 8.
As so far described, it will now be apparent that each of the folio sections consists of an album in itself and it is contemplated that each section may be employed to removably secure a collection of photographs or similar items of a particular character. Thus, one section may contain family pictures, a second section may contain pictures of trips, and each section may be employed for a different classification or group of pictures. An essential feature .of this invention is that any number of sections may be secured together to form a composite album, or may be removed therefrom as desired.
In order to effect the ready attachment and detachment of the folio sections from each other there is provided a latching means which is incorporated into the folio sections. As will now be seen from a consideration of Figures 2, 4 and 5, the front panel 16 of each folio section is provided with a pair of apertures 50. Secured to the rear panel 17, as shown more clearly in Figure 5, is a latch bolt 52 which may be detachably secured to the rear panel as by a washer 54 and fastening nut 56 upon the upper threaded extremity 58 of the bolt. The lower portion of the bolt extends below or exteriorly of the rear panel 17 a short distance and is provided with a laterally projecting lip 60. The projecting portion and lip of the bolt 52 of one section are adapted to be received in the openings 50 of an adjacent section.
In order to lock the sections together, the latch means shown in Figures 4 and 6 is provided. This latch means of each section consists of a pair of aligned latch bars 62 having their adjacent ends reversely tapered as at 64 and having their opposite ends provided with rings 66' which are adapted to loosely encircle the bolts 52 and their lips 60. An inwardly projecting tongue 68 formed in the inner circumference of the ring 66 is positioned to slide into engagement above the lip 60, as will be apparent from a comparison of Figures 4 and 5. A pair of compression springs 70 are suitably anchored against the opposite end walls of the rigid box portions of the folio sections and yieldingly urge the latching bars 62 towards each other and thus cause engagement of the projection 68 beneath the lip 66 of the locking bolt 52.
As will be apparent from Figures 4 and 6, each of the latch bars is provided with an elongated slot 72 which is slidably received upon and retained by a pair of fasteners '74 against the undersurface of the front panel 16 and thereby guide the latch bars for sliding movement thereagainst.
In order to move the latch bars 62 away from each other against their springs '70, and thus cause disengagement of the projection 63 of the latch bar from the lip so of the latching bolt 52, there is provided a latch actuator. This consists, see Figure 9, of a transversely disposed slide bar 30 which is slidable in a guide 82 secured to the underside of the front panel 16 and which is provided with oppositely inclined wedging surfaces 84 interposed between and engaging the surfaces 64 on the adjacent ends of the latch bars. A plate 86 having a finger grip portion 38 is provided, the plate 86 being disposed in a recess or notch 90 in the top surface of the front panel 16. A spring 92 engages a stem 94 projecting from the inner end of the slide and abuts against a plate 96 carried by the front panel 16.
t will now be apparent that the spring 92 normally urges the actuator into its released position, thereby permitting the spring '70 to move the latch bars into locking position and thus secure the folio sections to each other when the latch bolts 56 extend through the openings 50. However, when the actuator is depressed, and as will be apparent from Figure 1, any of the actuators of selected folios may be independently actuated, the wedge surfaces 84- will engage the surfaces 64 and urge the latch bars away from each other thereby permitting disengagement of the connection between the associated folio sections.
