Be it known that we, JOI-IN A. lAiRKs and GEORGE V. SHEFFIELD, both of .the city,
county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Electrical Type-XVriter, and we hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the artto make and use our machine.
Our invention relates to a machine for setting movable type and printing from the same, and also for delivering the Vtype to, a distributing-galley ready for redistribution to the font after they shall have been used to print from. p.
rllhe nature of the invention consists in constructing a machine in which each particular letter or character used is placed upon a pair of ways or slides, between which the typev are 2o held by means of heads or projections formed on the tops of the types, so.4 as to allowthe types to slide along on and between the said ways, a spring-follower being arranged to push the type comp actly up together and olof the op posite ends of the ways as rapidly as a toothed wheel which is arranged to engage the type at the delivery end ofthe said ways will permit. The said toothed wheel is operated by an electro magnet, and the mechanism connected therewith is so arranged as to cause the movement off of the betere-mentioned typeways ot' e only one type at a time, which said delivered type will pass, type end` down, through a delivery-tube, at the bottom end of which it will be set in a galley in proper form for printing any desired word or sentence, a number of the before-mentioned typeways and sets of type being1 provided, so as to have the machine contain allthe letters and `characters required to 4o print any required composition. From the i'orminggalley the types will slide onto a pair of printing-ways, where they will successively move between two sets of movable pla-tens, by the operation of the first of whiclrthe type will be inked, and by the operation of the second the type will print the desired characters or words on a slip of paper passed between them. Both of the said sets of platens will be operated at the proper time by' suitable elec- 5o trical mechanism.

The type-mover consists ot a ratchcted or serrated wheel, A, and a toothed wheel, A', 8o both of which are secured to a common axle, a. y These wheels will be of thin sheet metalsay` one-twentieth of an inch to one-tenth of an inch in thickness-and theylwill be placed on the shaft c side by side, and either in contact 8 5 with each other or in close proximity. A pawl, B, attached to the end of a pawl- 9o rod, b, is arranged to engage the ratchet-wheel A, and the said ratchet-wheel is moved bythe said pawl, a proper reciprocating movement being imparted to the pawl by means of the" electro-magnets C, armature C, and retracting-spring S, to'which armature one end of the pawl-rod is attached. To each of these type-movers A A there will be attached a pair of sliding typcways, D, which act as a font for the sliding or" movable type d.. lower, E, is fulcrumed by its fixed end to some suitable part of the frame Z, or a suitable at- A spring-,fol` loo lwhich are required.

tachment thereto, while the free end ofthe said follower is arranged to press against the types d, that are placed on the ways D, and press themup to and against the toothed wheel A, so as to allow the said wheel to engage the said type, one at a time, and pull them off ofthe delivery ends of the ways l), and allow them to drop, type end downward, through the type setting or delivery tube F. As there are several. of the fonts of type ,Z-in fact, one i'or each of the letters or characters used-there are several branch tubes, f, all. of which lead to the t-ube F, each of the said branch tubes j being placed so torceeive the type from a separate one of the mover-wheels A, and the next branch pipej' to receive the type from the next mover-wheel A@ and so on through the whole series, the various types required to form any word or sentence to be sent through the branch pipes or conduitsf and collected in the setting or. delivery tube F, from the bottom end of which the types drop, type end down, upon the galley G, where the various types are collected and formed into the words, sentences, &e., rlhe galley G will have a suitable lateral motion impartedto it automatically by the other mechanism of the machine, so as to lnrovide for the placing of the type side by side as they are sont down through the delivery-tube F.
The mover-wheel A has small teeth a projecting radially from its periphery, the said teeth being so constructed and arranged as to catch and take the type d, one at a time, off of the ends of the ways D and drop them down through the tubes or chutes F, as above explained. The top ends ofthe types l have small notches or recesses formed in their sides', just at the top ends of them, so as to permit the teeth a/ to pass between the said types and pull them oli' their ways one at a time. In vertical section the top ends ofthe types l will be of a T shape, the projecting arms being formed for the purpose of affording holds or seats that are to rest on the ways D, while the body ofthe type hangs down between the said ways, as is clearly shown in Fig. 7. This arrangement permits the types being held face downward in and on the wz ys D and pushed along thereon, as above described. From the galley G- the types (l are pushed forward by suitable mechanism, so as to permit them to rest on the printing-ways H, the types still resting on their project-ing heads, just as they did on the fontways D, and also on small ways g, which form the seats of the galley G. The ways H pass between upper and lower sets of movable platens, between the iirst pairs of which said platens the types are inked, and between the subsequent pairs of which said pl atens the impression of the type is printed on one or more slips of paper. In the drawings the first pair of these platens is represented by the ilat platens I J, which are connected by means of the levers and j, respectively, with the armaturev K/ of the operating-magnet K, so that by the movement of the said armature K,
by the well-known method of closing and opening an electrical circuit on the magnet K, the said upper and lower platens will be moved simultaneously up to and in contact with the types fZ-the upper platen to hold4 the type. and the platen J to press upward against and ink the faces ofthe type. In a similar manner the next pair Yof movable platens will be ope ated so as to press against the type for the purpose of printing therefrom. These second platens and their attachments are represented by the movable platens L and M, with their respective levers Zand on7 and the actuating-magnet. N. Y
The paper tobc printed from is to be fed over the top ofthe printing-platen in a continuous slip, which feeding may be accomplished by any of the well-known. devices for feeding slips of paper forward on telegraphic printing-instruments, and hence this mechanism need not be fully described.
As duplicate or triplicate printing instruments may be required, the ways H may be ex.- tended along beyond the printing-platens L M, and other similar printing platens and their actuating mechanism added as may be desired. At the discharging end of the printing-ways H there is a distributing pair ofways or distributing-galley, 0, which is to be combined with the said ways H, so that the types7 a'tterhaving been printed from, may be pushed off onto the said galley o, Vfrom which they may be redistributed to the first-named ways or font, D, for reuse in the machine.
^ Having described our invention, we claim-'- 1. The ratchet'ed type-mover A A, the sliding pawl B, the actuating-magnets C, armature C, and retracting-spring S, and springfollower E, arranged and operated substantially as described.
2. The paralleltypewaysD, withtheirtypes (l, the spring-follower E, the type-mover A A, the pawl B, electro-magnet C, a suitable armature connected to and operating said pawl and type-mover, and a suitable retractingspring, S, all combined substantially as described.
The type-galley G, in combination with the type-setting tube F and the printing-ways H, as and for the purpose set forth.
l. The movable platen l and the ink-platen J, in combination with each other and with the actuating mechanism and type-suiiporting ways H, substantially as described.
5. The combination ofupper andlower pivoted vertically-moving platens, a pair of toggle-levers connected thereto and to a horizontally-moving armature, a suitable electro-magnet for operating the same, and ways or guides for carrying type between said platens, substantially as shown and described.
