UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEOBGEW. SMITH, 015 BOSTON, MASsAonUsET'rS.
HAND DRILLING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,032, dated June 5,-1883.
Application filed December 1, 1882. (No model.)
ful Improvements in Hand Drilling-Machines and I do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in hand drilling-machines, and is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, on which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved drilling-machine. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 represents a section 011 the line A B, shown in Fig. 1.
Similar lettersrefer to similar parts 011 the different parts of the drawings.
(4 represents the spindle of the drilling-machine, having a chuck or socket, a, in one end to receive the drill, and having a feeding-screw, a, in the other end to cause the drill to be fed forward in the usual way by means of a rod or wrench. The spindle a. is provided with a fixed collar, 0, made in one piece with the spindle, and is also provided with a removable collar, 1). Between the collars a' and b is arranged the hollow hub c of the handle 0 in such a manner that it surrounds the spindle a. The hub c is provided with tapering recesses 0 c 0, containing rollers d d d, loosely j ournaled, one on each of the axles e c e, and also with projections c c 0', against which the rear ends of the guide-rods fff have their bearings. The guide-rods f f f have their forward ends projecting through perforations in the center of the axles e e c, and are provided with spiral nature in presence of two witnesses.
springs f f f surrounding them and tending to force the axles, with their rollers, into the narrowest parts of the recesses c c 0" until the rollers press against the spindle a and the hub c of the handle 0. The rollers d d d are made with tapering bearings d d for the axle e 6, so as to allow the rollers to adapt themselves to the surfaces against which they are pressed.
The operation of my improved drilling-ma chine is as follows: WVhen the machine has been placed in position for drilling, it will be seen that by moving the handle a in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3 the handle a, hub c, rollers d d d, and spindle a become firmly attached to each other, and for the time being they form, as it were, one single piece. Now, if you reverse the direction of the movement of the handle 0, the rollers 01 d d are instantly released from the hub 0, and allow the hub to be revolved around on the spindle a without moving the spindle.
The advantages of my improvements are: It can be operated without noise. There can be no lost motion, as the rollers are instantly and v struction, and operation of my invention, what I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is In a hand drilling-machine, the combination of the spindle a, with its chuck or socket a, feeding-screw c, and collars c b, with a handle, '0, having hollow hub 0, provided with cam-recesses c 0 0', containing rollers d d d, axles c e e, guide-rods f f f, and springs f f f, and also provided with projections 0' 0 0', as and for the purpose set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I have aifixedmy sig- GEOBGE W. SMITH.
