Application February 17, 1956, Serial No. 566,194
1 Claim. (Cl. 116--148) This invention relates to a knocker attachable to the knob collar of the lock set of a door.
Heretofore, door knob and knocker assemblies have been separate from one another, and it has been necessary that they be individually mounted in spaced relation upon the door of a house or other structure.
The main object of the present invention is to combine the knocker with the door knob assembly, thus to eliminate the necessity of separate purchase of these items, while at the same time facilitating installation of the knocker and door knob upon the door.
A more specific object of the invention is to so mount the knocker upon the door knob assembly of the lock set that it will not interfere with normal use of the door knob, with the door knob in turn being so disposed that it will not interfere with the use of the knocker.
Another important object is to provide a knocker of the type referred to which will be inexpensively constructed, and will be adapted for incorporation in the lock set of a door with a minimum of modification and redesign of said lock set, it being merely necessary to drill diametrically opposite holes in the knob collar of the lock set for attaching the knocker thereto.
Another object is to provide a knocker having side portions or legs that will be of a slightly springable material, so that the knocker can be resiliently engaged with the knob collar in the assembled relationship of these components.
Still another object is to form on the knocker an arcuate bight portion, in a preferred embodiment of the invention, curved about a center common to that of the peripheral bead of the escutcheon plate of the lock set, whereby said bight portion will follow the curvature of the plate periphery and will be struck thereagainst when used.
Still another object is to provide a door knob assembly and knocker combined that will be little greater in cost than the cost of a lock set not having the advantages of the invention.
Other objects will appear from the following description, the claim appended thereto, and from the annexed drawing, in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of a combination lock set and knocker, a door being illustrated fragmentarily;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the lock set and knocker, the door being illustrated fragmentarily, the scale being enlarged above that of Figure l; and
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference numeral designates a conventional door, such as an exterior house door. At 12 there has been generally designated a lock set, while at 14 there is shown a knocker combined with the lock set.
The lock set includes the usual escutcheon plate 16 having in the illustrated form of the invention a thick- Pa ented Apr.- 9, 19. 7
'ice
ened peripheral head 18. Projecting frgm the escutcheon plate centrally thereof is a knob collar 20 having a pcripheral flange 22 bearing against the plate '16, said knob ce a b i st e v Rota n n h co la 2 is t en n t 2 to which i se u ed a oo li e 26 spaced outwardly from the escutcheon plate a dis tance sufiicient for mounting and swinging of knocker 14.
in the illustrated example, the knocker 14 is formed from a single length of rod material, shaped to include a bight portion 28 concentric with and overlying bead 18 so that when the knocker is swung counter-clockwise in Figure 2 it will strike the bead.
Integral with bight portion 28 at opposite ends thereof are upwardly converging, straight legs 30 and integrally formed on the convergent ends of the legs are short extensions 32 providing pivot pins about the axis of which the knocker swings.
Extensions 32 project toward one another from the convergent ends of legs 30 in coaxial alignment, and rotatably engage in diametrically opposed openings 34 formed in the knob collar 20. At their free ends, the extensions terminate at the wall of the bore of collar 20 so as not to interfere with rotation of stem 24. The pivot axis of the knocker defined by extensions 32, extends diametrically of the knob collar 20 as shown in Figure 3.
Since the knob collar is stationary, the knocker will not turn in its own plane with the knob 26 when the knob is turned. Therefore, the knocker will not interfere with normal use of the door knob and as shown in Figure 2 is spaced rearwardly from the door knob a distance suflicient to prevent ones hand from striking the knocker when grasping the knob.
If, however, it is desired to use the knocker, one merely grasps one or the other of legs 30 and swings the knocker as shown by the arrows in Figure 2, to cause it to be forcibly brought against the periphery of the escutcheon plate, so that the knocker will sound within the building structure.
Quite possibly, the shape of the knocker may be varied, to conform to different shapes of escutcheon plates, and in fact it is mainly essential for successful operation that a portion of the escutcheon plate be disposed in the path of swinging movement of some portion of the knocker, to insure that the knocker will strike the plate.
It is believed apparent that the invention is not necessarily confined to the specific use or uses thereof described above, since it may be utilized for any purpose to which it may be suited. Nor is the invention to be necessarily limited to the specific construction illustrated and described, since such construction is only intended to be illustrative of the principles of operation and the means presently devised to carry out said principles, it being considered that the invention comprehends any minor change in construction that may be permitted within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A combination door knocker and door lock set, comprising: a fiat, circular escutcheon plate adapted for engagement against a door in face-to-face contact therewith, and formed with an outwardly projecting peripheral bead providing a continuous, annular anvil extending circumferentially of said escutcheon plate; a tubular knob collar stationarily engaged in and projecting forwardly from the escutcheon plate in concentric relation therewith, said knob collar being formed with diametrically opposite openings communicating with the bore thereof; a stem rotatably engaged in said collar; a door knob secured to the stem forwardly of the collar for rotating the stem; and a knocker formed of a single length of rod material having intermediate its ends a curved bight portion overlying the head for the full length of the bight portion, said bight portion being curved about the center of the escutcheon plate on the same radius as the peripheral bead, said knocker further including straight legs integral with the ends of the bight portion and extending inwardly from the bight portion, the legs terminating at their inner ends adjacent said openings, the inner ends of the legs being aligned with the openings diametrically of the collar, the knocker additionally including extensions on the inner ends of the legs pro 10 jecting in longitudinal alignment with each other inwardly into the openings, the extensions at their inner ends terminating at the juncture of the openings with the interior of the collar.
