Application October 26, 1953, Serial No. 388,367
1 Claim. (Cl. 42-73) This invention relates to an adjustable rifle butt plate and more specifically provides a rifle butt plate which is adjustable longitudinally and transversely of the rifle stock.
An object of this invention is to provide an adjustable rifle butt plate wherein the rifle may be accurately adjusted to the shoulder of a person firing the rifle wherein the person may accurately aim the rifle at a target.
Another object of this invention is to provide an adjustable rifle butt holder which is adjustable in two directions and has a contour which partially encircles the shoulder of the person firing the rifle.
A further object of this invention is to provide an adjustable rifle butt plate having an adjustable means which is simple in operation, sturdy in construction, adapted to fit any conventional rifle stock and inexpensive to manufacture.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rifle stock having the adjustable rifle butt plate of this invention secured thereto;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal, vertical section taken substantially along section line 22 of Figure 1 showing details of the rifle butt plate of this invention;
Figure 3 is a fragment-a1, top plan section taken substantially along section line 33 of Figure 2 showing de tails of the vertical dovetailed tongue and groove adjusting means;
Figure 4 is a transverse, vertical section taken substantially along section line 44 of Figure 2 showing details of the base plate adjusting pin and setscrews; and,
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing a modified form of the adjustable rifle butt plate of this invention.
Referring now specifically to Figure 1, it will be seen that the numeral generally designates the adjustable rifle butt plate mounted on a stock 12 of a conventional rifle (not shown).
Now referring more specifically to Figure 2, it will be seen that the adjustable butt plate 10 includes a base plate 14 secured to the rifle stock 12 by suitable screws 16 and the base plate 14 is provided with a pair of spaced apertures 18 for a purpose described hereinafter. An intermediate plate 20 having a pair of spaced projecting pins 22 on one face thereof and an elongated dovetailed tongue 24 on the opposite surface thereof all of which are rigidly secured to the intermediate plate 20. The projecting pins 22 are provided with a series of spaced indentations 26 which are engaged by thumb setscrews 28 threaded into the base plate 14 and projecting into Patented Apr. 9, 1957 ice the apertures 18. It will be noted that the ends of the projecting pins 22 are slidably received in suitable blind sockets or bores 30 in the stock 12 of the rifle. A butt plate 32 has a resilient facing 34 on one face thereof and a dovetailed groove 36 in its other face for engaging the tongue 24 on the plate 20. A flush setscrew 38 is threaded in a suitable aperture in the plate 32 and selectively engages the face of the tongue 24 thereby securing the plate 32 in adjusted position relative to the intermediate plate 20.
Referring specifically to Figure 5, it will be seen that the butt plate 32 is provided with a short upper extension 4-0 and an elongated lower extension 42 wherein the extensions partially encircle the shoulder of the person firing the rifle.
The operation of the device will be readily understood. With the adjustable rifle butt plate 10 secured to the stock of a rifle 12, the thumb setscrews may be loosened and the pins 22 pushed into or pulled out of the bore 30 and locked in position by the setscrews 28 and the setscrew 38 may be loosened and the butt plate 32 slid along the tongue 24 and adjusted in position by the use of setserew 38. As shown in Figure 2, a guide bushing 44 having a reduced end portion 46 press fitted into the apertures 18 in the plate 14 extends into each bore 30 thereby precluding any cocking or binding of the pins 22 as they are extended or retracted. This double adjustment allows an accurate adjustment of the rifle in relation to the shoulder and permits accurate firing especially in matched firing meets. The device may be made of any suitable material meeting with the required specifications.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the in-j vention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A firearm stock having spaced, parallel bores extending longitudinally thereinto from the rear end thereof, bushings mounted in the bores and including externally reduced end portions projecting therefrom, a stationary base plate mounted on said reduced end portions of said bushings and secured to the stock, an intermediate plate, a pair of spaced, parallel pins fixed on said intermediate plate and slidably engaged in the bushings for supporting said intermediate plate for adjustment toward or away from the base plate, said pins having spaced indentations therein, thumbscrews threadedly mounted in the base plate and engageable selectively in the indentations through the bushing for securing the intermediate plate in adjusted position, and a butt plate mounted for vertical sliding adjustment on said intermediate plate.
