SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,693, dated June 5, 1883,

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM EMMETT, of Logansport, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, and I do hereby declare that the following isv a full, clear, and exact description'thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The nature of this invention consists in the employment, in connection with a verticallyslotted draw-head, of a vertically-sliding coupling-hook having a hook at its upper end, and at its lower end a projection inclined or sloped downward toward its forward end, and operating mechanism for said hook secondly, in the in connection with a verticallyslotted draw-head having a vertically-slotted subdividing partition, of a vertically sliding coupling-hook having two or more hooks and a bottom projection, one of said hooks and said proj ectionbeing beveled or inclined down ward toward the front edge thereof, and operating mechanism for said coupling-hook; and, thirdly, of a vertically-sliding couplinghook having one or more hooks, a slotted draw-head, a crank-shaft, and aspirally-bladed or screw shaft, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing my coupling applied to a passengencar and a locomotive-tender, said car and tender being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the draw-head and coupling-hook support or bolt, wit-h the hook and its operating crank-shaft, partly broken away, in side view. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof as applied to the end of a car, the couplinghook-operating shaft being shown connected to the locomotive-tender lever. Figs. 4 and 5 represent, respectively, a side and-partly-secti onal view and afront view of my coupling. Figs 6 and 7 are side views thereof, showing modified forms of the draw-head and couplinghook.
In carrying out my invention I construct the draw-head A with a vertical aperture or slot extending through it, in addition to providing it with the ordinary link-chamber. The link-chamber of the draw-head, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, is subdivided into two compartmentsan upper and a lower one-by means of the lower beveled surface upon its forward end to guide the incoming link either into the upper or lower compartment of the draw-head, ac cording to the height of the incoming coupling-link, said partition being also slotted, as at F, in line with the slot or aperture of the draw-head to permit the passage or of the coupling-hook. In Figs. 4 and 5 and from the right-hand draw-head of Fig. 7 the partition. 0 is omitted, it being also omitted from the ordinarydraw-head shown in connection with my draw-head in Fig. 6.
I is the coupling-hook, adapted to slide ver tica'lly in the slot extending through the drawhead A, it being provided with avertieal slot, G, through which passes the bolt E, nutted to the outside of the draw-head for that purpose, said bolt also serving to secure the partition 0 in place in the draw-head. The hook I has two hooks projecting from its front side, one being adapted to engage with the coupling-link when entering the draw-head above the partition C, and the other to engage with the link when entering the drawhead below the said partition, according to the height of the approaching draw head. The hooks of the coupling-hook I are beveled on. their forward edges to permit the ready-passage of the coupling-link as it enters either compartment of the draw-head, while the upper surface of the lower hook and the bottom projection, I, thereof inclines or slopes downward toward its forward edge or end, the same being also made slightly rounding thereon to cause the ready expulsion, as the coupling-hook is raised, of a link that may happen to be in the draw-head when a connection is desired to be made with a car whose draw-head is provided with a link.

having independent movement of the shaft as the cars bump together; The shaft J reaches up to near the top of the car, where it is connected to a horizontal rod, L, extending along the side of the car and connected to the lever reception partition or block C, having an upper and a L, pivoted to the locomotive-tender L within convenient reach of the engineer to permit the readyuncoupling of the cars.
M is an upright shaft supported in the bear- 5 ings N, fastened to the end ofthe car, said shaft having at its upper end, reaching a short distance above the top of the car, a hand-wheel to permit its convenient operation, and at its lower end a spiral groove or screw-thread, M, adapted to engage with an additional crank, J, on the crank-shaft J, so as to effect the operation or raising and lowering of the coupling-pin from the top of the car. P are an adjustingull and plate, the lat- I ter being fixed to the side of the car, and the former depending therefrom by means of a chain or other suitable medium near by the plate, to enable the adjustment and retention of the lever-arm of the shaft J in holding the coupling-hook in an elevated or uncoupled position when desired.
.Q is a pin dangling by a chain or other means from the end of the car, and may be used to hold the coupling-hook in an elevated position in lieu of the other appliances used tor that purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the vertically-slotted drawhead A, of the vertically-sliding coupling-hook I, having a hook at its upper end, and at its lower end aprojection, I, inclined or sloped downward toward its forward end, and operating mechanism therefor, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the verticallyslotted draw-head A, having the slotted subdividing partition 0, of the vertically-sliding coupling-hook I, having two or more hooks and the bottom projection, I, one of said hooks and said projection being beveled or inclined downward toward the front edge thereof, and operating mechanism therefor, substantially as and for the purpose set 45 forth.
3. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the vertically-sliding coupling-pin I, and the crank-shaft J, having an additional crank, J, of the upright shaft M, having the screw or 50 spiral thread M, adapted to engage with the crank J of the shaft M, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
